1.
Overwater's are great basses.
Couldn't agree more. Mine are the Tanglewood made ones. I've played a classic Overwater from the 80s and it was superb, just beautiful. My Tanglewaters are hands-down better than any MiM Fender I've ever played. Not quite up to USA Fender quality (if you get a good quality one of course) but they're less than half the price.
 2. I've steered away from Fenders (and as I'm sitting at the budget end, Squiers too) because I'd prefer something a little more individual to the "default" "boring" "standard" basses that you see everyone play. Kind of why I drive a Lancer rather than a Ford Focus. You don't see many on the roads. They're not as good or as refined but it's "my" car. Same with basses. However, I've moved to a jazz copy - my Tanglewater Contemporary J4 which is a nice take on the classic J shape. Ultra-modern sound and I love it. Then I got my Tanglewater Classic J, a bit more Fender-looking, passive, sounds a bit more like a P or J and I'm gravitating towards that much more now. Heck, I'm even trawling the marketplace on here looking at Fenders because of my Classic J! If I had the cash though, I'd be asking Chris May to make me a bass that looks identical to my trans black, flame maple-topped Contemporary J4 but with a P/J setup and passive electronics. I'd ask him to make it a little smaller, a little lighter, you know, just like a Fender... So I think Fenders are like black holes. Sooner or later, they'll suck you in. But I still want to stick with my Overwaters, made by Tanglewood or not, as they're my trademark bass now. First world problems eh?
 3. +1 for them being Overwaters. I love them. They're quite similar to GHS Bass Boomers in terms of sound and feel (including the time it takes to lose their initial zing).

 5.
I think we should establish a Basschat fund and buy eBay and PayPal. Then we could stick them up David Cameron's bottom.
If you're shoving stuff up his arse I can donate a bass.

 7.
Hearing a band doing a cover of a song I recorded with my band 20 years ago.
Wow, were you tempted to go up to them and tell them you did the original?
 8. I was playing at an open mic night with my band (singer, Pinball on guitar and me) and had a double-bass player sat right next to me watching me play and he came up afterwards and said "nice bass playing". Huge compliment from another player imo Also, played a slot at a beer and cider festival, biggest gig I've done: (bit windy out there so a bit of wind noise)
 9. I'm too late to vote but Lowdown's almost got it for me but JamesFlashG just pipped it. The piano at the beginning meshed perfectly with the image in my head.

 11.
Wont do all the notes but gets you going: http://chordify.net/ Just improvise over those chords to the rhythm or work out what the progression is...
Just tried that on a couple of my band's tracks and it's about 80% there, not bad!
 12. Oh crap, really sorry but I've been full up with crap and all sorts this week and haven't had time to check them out. If I don't get a chance to listen before voting ends I'll do my best to listen to them all and at least put some comments on to Soundcloud.
 13.
Possibly the greatest thread on Basschat? People making music instead of talking about making music Nice idea Mornats.
Well, as with the composition challenge and mix challenge, it's the people putting the stuff up there that make it great
 14.
its a great bit of kit, only thing it misses for me is some basic vst instruments inside it, but its reliable and solid
I guess that keeps the cost down and there are loads of ways to get some decent free vst instruments - Kontakt Player, Independence Free, Sample Tank Free etc. It's worth noting that the Rea effects (ReaEQ, ReaComp and so on) are highly rated by Mike Senior (who wrote that Mixing Secrets book that a lot of people on here are a fan of, including me). In fact, I've managed to get Sample Tank 2 L and Miroslav Philharmonik on sales for $40 each (around £30 or so) so if you add in the cost of those to Reaper it still comes in under the price point of a lot of competitors. Plus this statement of theirs deserves the payment alone! "No Intrusive Copy Protection. We believe that technological enforcement of copy protection is not in the best interest of our customers." \m/
 15. I used the electric guitar from Independence Free (http://pro.magix.com/en/independence/independence-free.1013.html) on a track and it sounded decent. It was ages ago and the last time I listened to it I'd forgotten it was a sampled guitar And it's free, so you can just give it a go. It's a hefty download though.
 16. It's been on my to-do list for a long time but after using Reaper for at least 18 months I've finally bought the licence. I've felt awful for not having done so sooner, especially as their attitude towards DRM totally rocks: "Honest Business Model We offer a good product at a fair price. We don't spend money and effort on marketing, complicated piracy protection, or other things that do not directly improve REAPER and the user experience. We think the good will generated by playing fair and being responsive to users is more valuable to our business than short-term profits." It's only $60 (around £40 or so, give or take) and has just about everything you need in there. All of my other software is legit so it's been a shame it's taking me so long to stop abusing the overly generous trial period of Reaper.
 17. We've got some video of us playing live and I was going to create a YouTube channel and stick some vids up on there. Any thoughts/opinons/advice/pitfalls about doing this? I'm fairly clued up on social media (I'm a webby by trade) but tend to leave social media to the marketing folks. I was also wondering if there's anything to watch out for rights-wise about putting your music on YouTube. We're happy to have it on Soundcloud, I just want to make sure we're not giving away the rights to Google or anything like that. Ta!
 18.

Poor teddy, he's getting his brain nuked.
 19. So we're doing a medley of Skol's winning tracks?
 20. My Tannoys are on the bottom with the M-audio's on top. I've got some isolation pads in between them and the Tannoys sit on a thin bit of rubber insulation too. I've no idea if it's overly detrimental or not to be honest. But with my desk in the corner now I should be able to get some proper stands for my monitors so the M-audios will sit behind and above the Tannoys. The M-audios are slightly above head height but point down directly at me so I think they're fine in that regard.
 21. It had to be done: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/212756-home-studio-porn/ A home studio porn thread please hide your stacks of real porn before taking photos please ladies and gents.
 22. It's been threatened, so here it is. The Home Studio Porn thread. Gratuitous pics of your home recording studio please! [sharedmedia=core:attachments:138599] That's mine which consists of: My PC (the huge black tower on the bottom right) A cheap desk from Argos A pair of Tannoy E11 speakers, custom wired and shielded Which are plugged into a Rotel RA-930-AX amp (which plugs into a Soundblaster X-fi soundcard) M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe monitors Which are plugged into a Guitar Rig Session I/O As are my Superlux HD662F monitor headphones And I have an M-audio Keyrig 49 midi keyboard No acoustic treatment as yet, the desk is at a funny angle in the corner under advice from 51m0n to help with stereo phasing issues.
 23.
Actually. I'm not averse to Chinese-made Overwaters really. This has turned out to be an interesting thread for me in that regard. I think I have to settle on the fact that British company is goog enough. I've never seen or heard an Overwater before - until I had a peek at some pics after starting this thread. I shall look further.
I have two, and love them. A little heavier than the norm but sound and play superbly. Our very own Walman has some sound samples on Soundcloud of the classic J (the passive one - my main gigging bass now): https://soundcloud.com/aka_walman/sets/overwater-by-tanglewood I'm drawn to them because they're British but being made in China puts them into my price bracket and not £2000 out of it. I'm hoping this investment helps keep Overwater alive, crafting hand-made basses.
 24. I learnt on an Aria Pro II ZZB Deluxe. It was twice as big as me and four times heavier but it looked the mutt's nuts. I then bought an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection SB301 in pearl white new (with my first student loan) back in 1994. What a beauty and a total contrast to the Aria. Fast forward 16 years and I was bassless (had been for a long time) and bought my Dean Hillsboro Single on impulse, which served me well being fairly light with an ultra slim Geddy Lee Jazz-esque neck until I once again hankered for a Bass Collection. I got a 5 string SB315 and a 4 string fretless SB320 off Ebay. Should have really held out for a 4 string fretted as, despite these two being absolute beauties, I never quite gelled with them. So I bought an Overwater Contemporary Jazz (Tanglewood-made) after falling in love with it in a shop, then bought a used Classic Jazz from here as I wanted a passive tone (and another Tanglewater). Oh, in between the two Tanglewaters I bought a Warwick Rockbass Corvette off here as I had serious GAS, but little cash, for a Warwick when I bought my first BC in the 90s. If I could have learnt on any of these basses from the start, it would definitely be the SB301. Hands down.
 25.
Ashdown make some good stuff. I love my MiBass (ironically made in China) but it is from a UK company at least. If they buy in the product from abroad, badge it as theirs and export it 'round the globe, then that does our country some good. And it's a cracking bass amp.
That made me curious as to why you weren't (or didn't sound) keen on the Chinese-made Overwaters.
