I've plugged this book many times before, but for anyone interested this is the most useful resource I've found for home music-making: http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/0240815807
I've ordered myself a copy too. I do struggle with mixing so I'm focusing on this for a little while. Cheers for the recommendation!

Great review of all the tracks Luke!
Mornats got my vote though because of the use of the film dialogue. I loved it!
Thanks Myke! Well I've listened to them all now and yes, indeed, what a great selection! Really nice to see (hear?!) some new faces too and I hope everyone has now got the recording bug. This was a tough one when it came to voting, like a lot of others I had a few favourites. I went for Debs' in the end for a few reasons. I love the bass bit at the beginning, it really sets the tone of the track. The whole concept reminded me of Paul Oakenfold's Urban Soundtracks which I loved listening to whilst doing a 250 mile drive from work to home every week about 10 years ago. Great mix of spoken word and singing I thought. And also, for your first effort, it was bloody good! Well, good for any number of efforts but it's a great début And the others, wow! Not a bad track amongst the whole lot. Some really nice takes on the theme and I guess I've got a fondness of cinematic soundtracks styles so this month's entries really tickled my boat. If that's the right phrase lol!

At pretty much all of the open mic nights we're doing I'm going straight into the PA which rules out the Gramma pad or getting another cab. Otherwise I'd definitely invest in the Gramma, they've got a really good rep.

I know that when the original one was released they had some trouble with using the name Rocksmith (an established UK band had that name) so the release was delayed. I'm sure I read that the bass part was added into the UK release to make up for the delay. Hopefully they'll not relegate the bass to a backing instrument!

Hopefully all of that AI jam stuff (which looks great) will be available for bass and not just guitar. In any case, I do like how this is coming along. Might well be tempted!

Thanks for the replies everyone! So a compressor won't help with the boominess (but I'd like to try one to help even out the sounds between strings and get some consistency in playing 8th notes). I imagine setting up an EQ to cut some of it would take a bit of setup which isn't always available at open mic nights I may just switch to my active Tanglewater (I usually take the passive one) and try the on-board EQ for now to see if it helps.
Some simple DIY and free software is all you need to measure and properly treat any room
Oooh, which software is this?

Hello all, I'm currently playing open mic nights with my band and have a problem every so often where some of my bass notes will boom out and others are normal volume. Messing around at home and adjusting pickup heights etc. has helped when playing at home but not when playing live. I think the problem stems from the various room layouts and perhaps because I'm going through their PA systems (which would rule out using an Auralex Gramma pad). So I was thinking of grabbing a compressor pedal to see if that would help. Any thoughts or am I wasting my time? A Behringer DC9 was what I was thinking of, mainly because it's under £30 new and I'm skint at the moment!

Forgive me if someone's already posted this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=majFrn3j1Co -
I know it says I'm from Bristol but I'm originally from Newcastle. My dad used to play drums in the Newcastle Big Band in the 70s (along with some bass guy called Gordon summat... hehe). Anyway, hopefully Mal can help spread the word.

The 30 Harshest Musician-on-Musician Insults
Mornats replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Hehe, some very harsh things in there but I did lol at a few. -
No worries, it was a genuine concern that you may have been doing them a disservice will dead strings.
-
I noticed Janek Gwizdala doing this - And it's all fair and well to see someone that changes his strings every 3 days doing this but I play til my tone is utterly horrible THEN change them. I'd feel I was doing someone a disservice by passing them on my old strings.
Might be worth chucking a bunch of old strings into a pan and boiling them before sending them off. Some of the musicians in central/south America are plahying without E strings or are tying knots in guitar strings. I'm sure dead strings are still a step up. But yes, for those musicians who replace them after every gig, this is something they could really help with.
Get yourself a facebook page (not group) set up and you'll have a ton of them sent to you
Yes, do this for sure. And then ask every one of us on basschat to like and share the page and let's get some strings out there. Edit: I shared their website on Facebook - I'm friends with enough guitarists and bass players to get a few sets sent out and I've got 3-4 old sets I can send. I also singled out one of my dad's old friends who's a very experienced session musician (keys though, not guitar/bass) so he can hopefully send it out to his contacts. In fact, from his website: "I have a musical career spanning almost 30 years, You can hear my Keyboard playing on many albums & TV shows Featuring the following artists. Ray Charles, James Brown, Lionel Ritchie, Joe Cocker, Hue & Cry, Curtis Steigers, Lulu, Will Young, Sister Sledge, Elaine Paige, The Nolans, Sarah Brightman, Boy George, Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins, The Roly Poly’s, Michael Ball, Shirley Bassey, Beverly Craven, James Morrison,The Feeling, McFly, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes." So I'd say he knows a few people!

Who Should Get Free Basses For Life??
Mornats replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
I noticed it again in the Daft Punk video of Get Lucky. Niles Rodgers has his logo masked off too. If he isn't endorsed by Fender he should be.
Is that a Fender? I saw that video the other day and wanted to know what type of bass it was. It looks rather groovy. Sounds it too! -
Go for it - I've done that a couple of times and it's only the final 'voting' post that is judged etc - so it's fine by the er, 'rules'.
Indeed, and remember this is more of a learning exercise than a competitive exercise so I'd say feedback and remixes should be encouraged as we go on.

Cheers Garry, I had a skim through and it looks really good. I'll have to sit down and digest it fully at some point.

Got more wood. There, an answer to the OP's question AND to the Carol Vorderman video.

There's been an experiment on Talkbass between a plank of scrap wood, an alder bass and another bass here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/scrap-lumber-bass-vs-alder-bass-can-you-tell-difference-743932/ The biggest difference in sound quality between any of my basses comes from when I hand one over to my bass tutor and he plays it...
-
I tried this at work and got it right but have to admit there's not a massive amount between the sounds IMHO. Enough to rank them in the right order but when you think of the difference between a 1666 Stradivarius violin and a £39.99 Tesco one you have to wonder whether the monetary difference would be better spent on top-notch lessons. I think it's testament to the playing ability of Cecilia Stinton that they sound quite alike. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/10116919/Interactive-Challenge-your-musical-ear.html

I love the P/J on my Overwater Classic. Although as mentioned above the J is too quiet. It's still a nice blend when the pan pot's in the middle or around 1cm rotation in either direction. PIc, just 'cos I've not posted this one yet I think
