  1. Dismantling isn't a problem for me. Currys type shops are good for big bits of boxes. I got told to help myself last time. A measurement of the neck (width and depth) would be good, though. I'll see if I can find it online.
  2. What width is the neck? It looks wider than a trad Jazz. I like a wider neck, and I like fixer uppers, so if you would consider posting, I might be your man.
  3. I must add my tuppence here. I copied a technique of Paul Rose's (Prose bass) that worked fantastically well. Rustin's plastic resin-mix it with the supplied hardener, then pour it into the 'moat' you have created on the fingerboard using (LOTS) of masking tape. Leave for three or four days undisturbed on a level surface, then use progressively finer wet and dry to level and smooth it. The finish is like glass without any of the brittle squeakiness you might get with varnish. It's so good that hammer-ons almost play themselves!
  4. I got this bass in a recent trade with a fellow member with the notion of defretting it, but I've since decided to go for a custom Letts bass, so this sale will fund that idea. Very little needs to be said about these basses; we know how wonderful they are. This one is a lovely sunburst, with a birdseye maple neck, the scratchplate having been made by Sims. It comes on and off without disturbing the strings. It has LaBella flats on at the moment, but will be sold with rounds. The bass will be mummified in bubble wrap, gigbagged, boxed, and posted to anywhere mainland uk for £350 all in. Very happy to answer any questions. Thanks for looking. 5. I acquired this lovely bass in a recent trade. It's the Eastwood copy of the Ampeg AUB, the first production fretless bass. Single mini humbucker in the mid position, vol/tone controls and passive. It's in excellent condition. There is one mark next to the jack socket (slight), and the previous owner lightly sanded the back of the neck to remove the gloss finish. It doesn't look at all unsightly, just trying to be thorough. It plays really nicely, with a deep throatiness. It has Thomastik flats at the moment, which sound wonderful, but it will be sold with Fender flats. The bridge has been upgraded to a Gotoh unit, and has tremendous sustain. Mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood board nicely covered in a smooth black (plastic?) finish. It has dot markers for each fret, and the last owner very neatly and cleverly filled in the 'even' numbers with green marker, leaving 1,3,5,7,9,12 etc highlighted, but with all frets marked I'm selling it because I've committed to a custom Letts bass, and need the funds. I did have in mind a project for this bass, which I might try if it doesn't sell quickly- There is a ready made cavity between the bridge and pickup which would fit another pickup in the bridge position beautifully. The tone control could be changed to a volume simply enough to make a 2 pickup vol/vol monster. I found a pair of chrome mini humbuckers on Ebay for £30. I think this would give immense versatility. I just mention this fyi. The bass will be mummified in bubble wrap, then an old gigbag, then a cardboard box. The price is £350 delivered to mainland uk. 6. I have the bass now, and wonderful it is, too. I don't think I want to keep the scratch plate, though. I would be happy to pass it on to someone here in exchange for postage and some goodwill.
  7. Cheers for that. I really like the look of your Fender, but Jazz necks are too narrow for me. Anyway, I'm really getting comfortable with the G&L now. Hope your sale goes well.
  8. Ok, thanks guys. The search continues.
  9. In my never ending search for the "perfect" bass, I know I want a 4 string fretless passive through neck with a rosewood board. I need a nice thick chunky neck, and I was wondering if the Peavey Grind or Cirrus would fit the bill. I'm prepared to defret, but I'm not sure about the neck dimensions. I know there are some Peavey lovers out there, so any feedback would be welcome. Cheers.
  10. Just wanted to give three cheers for my local shop (R & T Music in Barrow). Never had anything but great service from all the staff. They'll help if you want it, leave you alone if you don't, and they can tell just by looking!
  11. If Mr McIver is still following this thread, thanks for allowing so much feedback; I think the mag reflects some of that feedback. I would like to suggest an interview with James Hutchinson, Bonnie Raitt's bass player. To me, he kind of represents the ideal- talented but modest, with a lovely feel for the fretless, and I would enjoy hearing his views. Thanks.
  12. This is probably one of those questions where the answer is obvious to everyone but me. In the interests of advancing the frontiers of our knowledge, however, here goes: What makes a neck 'fast'? I personally prefer a chunky neck, and find a slim, Jazz neck cramping. So for me, a chunky neck IS a fast neck. Does it mean you have to open your hand wider, which slows you down? I've noticed also, in reviews (BGM) a bigger neck is labelled 'comfortable', which I agree with. Does this mean a slim neck is UNcomfortable? Sorry about the slightly random thoughts, but all input appreciated.
  13. When I say regretted, I of course mean defretted. Curse you, predictive texting.
  14. Any details available? Active/passive,what pickups, how is it strung? Anything like that would be helpful. I'm curious to see how it would send regretted. Thanks.
  15. Hi there, any more info possible on the neck? I really need a chunky old fashioned precision type neck. Is yours anywhere in that region? I tried a Warwick Thumb in the Bass Gallery last year, and was very impressed. Thanks, Sean
