[/quote] Glad to be of help Ossie They're great basses and perfect for modding. If you do decide to keep it and do it up make sure you keep us posted with plenty of pics in a build diary. Bassdude - I felt the same about Squier til I actually tried the VM range. Fantastic basses for the money you'll pay. The only issue I had with the VM Fretless was the intonation high up the board but a set-up (which included having the board planed) and a new set of strings sorted that out. The only other budget fretless I could get my hands on was the distressed 'Vintage' Jaco-a-like. Nice bass, played well but not as nice as the Squier. Also I just dont like that 'distressing' fad so I'm happy to say the Squier won. -

From what I've read, both on this forum and others, there are no vintage-style machines that are a direct replacement for Squier VM's so I guess it would involve filling and re-drilling for the new ones. As I currently have no issues with the stock machines I thought it best to leave them as is although I gotta say the vintage ones you have look really nice. (PS - if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me regarding the direct replacement machines for VM's and maybe even point me in the direction of a suitable replacement set if you know of any )

I recently modded my Squier VM Fretless. Tort PG, Gotoh 301, fake grounding strip, pull-bar, Jazz Bass style knobs, neck pup cover, electrics replaced with CTS & Switchcraft units, replaced the original cap with an old PIO .05 cap off a 50's Telecaster, Series/Parallel switching and I had the fretboard planed as well. The bass cost me around £250 a couple of years ago and the modifications and upgrades came to more than £100 so in essence I've paid over £350 for a VM fretless. Personally I think it was worth it because it looks and sounds so much better than it did originally. Cheers[/quote] It can get quite expensive, depending on how far you take it of course, but it totally changes the look of the bass for the better (IMHO!) Before the modding I would still play it but not nearly as much as I do now. I was going for the '62RI look so here's what I did: 3 ply tort PG & screws - aftermarket so not much more than £10. Not a direct fit so needed slight alterations to fit around the neck and control plate. Gotoh 301 bridge - £32 new off e-Bay. 1/4" copper tape to make the fake ground strip between the bridge and bridge pup - £2.00 off e-Bay. Black plastic pull-bar & screws and Jazz Bass style knobs - next to nothing off e-Bay. Chrome neck pup cover - less than a tenner new. After I finished all that I decided to get the electrics replaced with better quality units and have the pups wired series/parallel with a push/pull, so I got a tech I know to replace everything with CTS pots & Switchcraft jack and wire the pups for S/P. I found an old .05 PIO cap (allegedly from a 50's Telecaster) on e-Bay and had him fit that as well. All-in-all the modding cost me over £100, including all the work carried out by the tech, but it's definitely improved the look and sound of the bass immeasurably. Cheers, Ian

Yup, it is a great rig, I couldn't agree more! Just reluctant to part with it but She Has Spoken! And yes, we had a chat not that long ago about Trace gear including your vast collection of heads & cabs. Very impressive I must say. If only I was allowed to have that much TE stuff!

Nice bass. Very interested I currently have a Trace rig for sale in the Amps & Cabs section so depending on how that goes I may be in a position to take this off your hands. Would have to include delivery though as I'm in Edinburgh. Cheers, Ian -

Hi Chris, As has been mentioned previously you cant go wrong with the older Trace gear. I've been playing through Trace stuff since buying my first rig in '86 (MKV AH150 with GP11 pre & MKV 1048 cab) and have never looked back. I recently bought a really nice MKV AH250 from a fellow basschatter and have aquired a couple of 1518 cabs so I basically have 2 Trace rigs now: AH150 with 1518 cab and AH250 with a 1518 & 1048 on top! As my missus continually points out, there's absolutely no need for both rigs so, very reluctantly, the AH150 and one of the 15" cabs have to go. (I'll [i]eventually[/i] get round to placing an ad in the For Sale section at some point I'm sure!) It's a shameless plug I know but here's your chance to own a classic TE rig at a very reasonable price PM me if interested

It was strung with four different strings (including one blue nylon thing) and played like sh*te! I ended up painting it black with some Dulux gloss.

Not much of a MM fan but I agree with Moos3h; that IS lovely! The only thing ruining it for me is that dreadful clear PG. First thing I'd do if I won the bass would be to remove said PG and set fire to it so no-one else could defile such a nice looking instrument with it! PS - Jazz Bass is really nice as well. I take it this person likes their basses to look natural then?
