1. Thanks Marcus - great to see you on the stand and nice to meet your Dad! Glad u love the bass! Congrats to Steve - I think you are the first customer - I did speak to a chap today at the show who has placed an order for one but you are in possession (sounds terrible - not meant to!) well done m8!!!! Cheers! Nick
2. Hi Pete! Your basses are indeed excellent - tried a couple last year! Welcome! Nick
3. Hallo! Welcome! Have you heard of a band called The 925s? Good mates of mine, doing well in the Netherlands!
4.
The back panel schematic says "manufactured in PRC for Ashdown Engineering" Peoples Republic of Colorado??
...Peterborough Regional College???!!!
5.
Both gigs went well - Ebeneezers was very good for loading and a nice stage area to set up on, plenty of family in to see our singer. Cherry Tree was good once we'd sorted out setting up at a funny angle to allow plenty of access round the bar area. We got a very enthusiastic response at the Cherry Tree which was pleasing since it was just locals in there who'd never heard of us before. We've been asked back at the Cherry Tree, we probably need to do Friday&Saturday gigs nearby to make the travelling worthwhile.
Meant to say that the Cherry can be a bit of a squeeze (Steve did mention it!) - although I've played there with an 8 piece band - took over most of the `back wall' area! Glad to hear the gigs went well - Peterborough can be a funny place to play in terms of `crowds' - it varies tremendously (I can say this as I've lived here all my life except for 6 months in Saudi!) - let me know when you come back!
6. Just to add, JHK is a top bloke to deal with! Cheers Jon! Nick
7.
nice one mate! i cant wait mate, what days is going to be best marcus
Friday might be good!
8.
I work in Bargain Booze, and ive managed to talk to three people about my bass gear so far. i should well work in a bass shop! Seriously though, Basschat should open a bass shop. One in manchester and one in london. We'd own the world.
If I had enough money, I would!
9.
true true, cant wait to read it though and im sure there will be sum cool pics init too, i might go along to music live, anyone coming,,, will nick let me have a go dya reckon??? play hard and peace marcusB
The idea is that the bass is going to be there for everyone to have a play; since many people have yet to see one in the flesh as it were, I suggested to Rob that it might be a good idea for me to take one to the show - since he's not doing the show, the only way to see them is a trip to the factory, so I'm kind of bridging the gap and hopefully, the bass will get some exposure! Its LEDs are superb!!!
10. Do you work at the Bass Cellar too? Hehe! I'm quite sorted on the lady front!
11. Thats a really sweet bass Steve - it plays very nicely too! I'm in a dilemma right now - I'm really in love with the MK-II - what am I to sell to fund one?!?!! Nick
12. Looks like amalabunga to me....very rare genus found in the highlands of Essex! Looks very `ash' - I suppose we are not used to seeing knots in basses!
13. I've just `tweaked' the MkII - plays itself!!!
14. I know its a fretless StingRay bass but the `No Parlez' album (Paul Young) featuring the legendary Pino has some fine moments, espec. `Ku Ku Kurama' and `Sex'. Mark King used a 'Ray on the `Forever Now' album.
15. Great day! Lovely pizza! Actually, Rich and I have reunited after many years, we were in fact seperated at birth! The Braintree Bass Bash was a huge success - bit chilly!
16.
Just met him today briefly at his emporium of bass delights. What a nice fella.Made the trip easy and enjoyable ,and took time to take me through some of his large but very special collection of basses.
Thanks Jon - it was a pleasure meeting you mate - the mags really take me back to when I was young - some real gems in there!
17. Might be demoing one of the new KB's for Rob at Music Live - ! Rich - what time are you at Status on Friday? Now might be able to get down there for a bit at around 1:00pm ish!!! (need to pick the bass up!)
18. Great player - he now lives in LA where his wife runs a designer clothes store! Remember seeing them play Live Aid back in '85 and even then, I thought, `thats a little bit too high' even by Mark King's standard!
19. Ebeneezers is an ok-ish club gig but the Cherry Tree (just further up the road) is a great little pub - have played there literally thousands of times! Shame I'm away from Thursday otherwise would have popped down. Nick
20.
the way things are looking my bass gear wont be worth more than my INSURANCE. What really pi**ed me off the other day, got an online quote for a fiesta at 2.3k (wtf?!) then changed my details from Mr Stephen to Miss Stephanie and it became 1.3k. I expected a premium for being a bloke but a grand?! Ugh.
why not have a sex change! Did wonders for me!
21.
Whilst I am aware that these polls are a crock, it is interesting to note that NONE of my favouries even registered. Why? Because the importance of a player is proportionate to the popularlity of the band he or she plays in, the public profile of those bands and the number of records they sell. So, even though there are some astonishing players out there that noone here has mentioned, they won't get any 'votes' because their music appeals to a minority, doesn't get played on tv or radio and doesn't get acknowledged by high volume sales. So, lets call this a 'Most Popular' poll rather than a 'Best' because, objectively, most of the players everyone here is raving about are pretty limited and, considering the full basket of skills, are likely to be found wanting.
+1 Mark King himself said many years ago that to be called the best is a load of crap! `I've thought about it a lot and what I am is a very popular bass player...'. Nuff said! On saying that, he is a very good and visible bass player; I'm a big fan too but L42 did some crap stuff as well as some superb stuff - they have sold over 30 million albums so they must have been popular to a point! Nick O
22.
Toasted does theory. Whodathunkit.
Whodathunkit - great band name!
23. To those of you who are sticking up for the Bass Cellar... 1. I went in there on a very rare day off (for me!) with an open mind, following similar threads on here concerning their recent attitude/service. I have purchased two Status basses from there in the dim and distant past and received good service so I'm not into knocking places for the sake of it. 2. I collect basses (you don't say!), as you have already seen, and without being a bighead, know a little bit about them - I'm not a complete oracle by any means (I'm learning more every week) but my main passion in life is bass - it pays my mortgage at the end of the day! They have a bass on display (said Aria) which I am quite impressed by, and being a fan of such late 70's/80's exotica (or is that erotica!), I asked the bigger guy if I could have a look at it. He takes it down off the wall, passes it to me - I have a little play on it and it is in excellent condition. Little overpriced but still a very interesting bass to me...so far so good! 3. However, the bass is labelled as an `SB-1000 Elite' when in fact it looks like an SBR-150....I point this out, not in a condescending way but in fact I said `actually guys, this bass is not an SB-1000 since the 1000's only had one pickup and dot markers etc etc - it looks like an SBR-150'. He tries to find it on Google to no avail. I mention I'm into Arias etc and we start talking about basses and stuff, my collection etc. . The other chap then makes the comment about being sad and that I'd be better off collecting stamps...`you'd pull far more women that way'. I said, `I've got a lovely lady so I think I will stick to basses thank you...' I walk out. He might well have been trying to be funny, but the way in which he said it did not come across as a joke; he definitely has an attitude problem. I'm up for a laugh and a joke as much as anyone but he came across like a prat. The other guy was fine - polite and at least he was trying to find out more about the bass etc. If that smaller guy had not have cheesed me off, I would have gone back and made an offer on the Aria. Nick
24.
Nick, do you normally mention to total strangers that you own 57 basses?
I happened to be chatting in a fairly polite manner to one of the guys behind the counter - discussing said Aria, mentioned that I have a number of Arias in my posession; chap asks me how many basses I've got, he is told current number! Other ruder staff member then passes comment!
25. Alan Jones - one of the UK's foremost session players of the '70s/80's Colin Hodgkinson Mark King Plus... Sting Chris Squire Pino John Wetton Geddy Jet Harris Licorice Locking Mick Karn Percy Jones Chuck Rainey Will Lee Stanley Clarke etc etc etc...
