  1. I'm pretty sure these are late 70's Monstertones. There was some kind of collaboration around that time between Schecter, ESP and I guess Moon. Hard to find details though. I'm obsessed with Schecter pickups. I've got about 3 or 4 sets of old Schecter pickups from this period. They sound great.
  2. Thanks CH. Unsure if it's slightly overpriced or if the market is just a little slow. Everyone tightening belts for the upcoming utility bill increase, perhaps 🤷
  3. I think they've been going since the 70's. Made in Japan and not hugely common over here. Larry Graham is probably their most famous artist. He used an all white jazz back in the day. They offered a range of pickups, so I assume it's for ease of just dropping different ones in. The base of the bobbins on these pickups are the same outline shape as a pickup cover, so they sit kind of flat against the bottom of the cavity...if that makes sense! There's an old catalogue here which has them in. They were referred to as 'jaggy' pickups, but are basically Schecters/Tom Anderson pickups. https://brochures.yokochou.com/guitar-and-amp/moon/1985/sp_en_09.html
  4. Hi all, I've got a new amp on the way, so making some room. This is an early 1990's Peavey Alphabass head. Fairly rare around these parts. USA-made, 165 watts, rackmountable. Easy enough to carry, even one handed. Serviced last summer and had a few preamp valves replaced and was given a clean bill of health. I shipped this over from Germany at the start of Covid, so it has only had light use since my ownership. Never gigged whilst I've had it. There's not loads of info about these as I don't think too many were made. If you're looking for a reliable, lightweight (for a valve amp!) amp for not too many pounds, you can't go too wrong with this. The case has some scratches, but obviously hidden if it's in a rack. Can get a clean tone by cranking the master and then gain to taste. Doing it the other way, the gain gets quite gnarly early on, but it's more than enough power to keep up with a band. Price is £350, not looking for any trades thanks. I'm not able to ship it right now due to not having suitable packaging, so collection from just outside Leek in Staffordshire is welcome, or somewhere reasonably close to hand over in person is fine. Thanks all
  5. Sounds good. Coalville's not too far from me either
  6. Hi all, Having a clear out of some things I don't use that often, so up next is a 1978 Fender Precision. This thing screams late 70's punk I picked this up a few years ago from a guy who bought it in 1979 in Blackpool. Since it's been in my ownership, it's been used lightly, with a couple of gigs before Covid hit. It's a black and maple, late 70's P bass, so not a huge amount to say. It's definitely not a collector's piece and has been very well used. It has tons of scrapes and scratches, but works just as it should and is very comfortable to play. The Dimarzio is obviously a replacement. It was soldered in by the original owner not long after purchasing the bass. The pickups were originally held together with some electrical tape, so these have been re-soldered and re-spliced, and heat shrunk so make sure they're connected as well as possible. I also have one half of the original pickup, which will be included in the sale. Asked the owner if they could find the other half, but it's long gone. The Dimarzio has a price sticker left on the side of the pickup cover from the original purchase...£10.99 if I remember right. Thought it was a nice touch, so it's still on there. The nut looks to be a replacement - there is a small strip of maple just in front of it, which suggests it could have been damaged and replaced in a former life. It's an old repair and doesn't affect anything with the nut or playability - if I was going to keep it, I'd consider replacing it but it's works fine as is. I've tried to capture it in the pictures. Truss rod turns as it should - overall just a solid workhorse bass. As a late 70's P, she's not the lightest. Weighs 5.08kg or just a smidge over 11 lbs. Price is £1650. I'm not looking for any trades thanks. I am happy to ship, but will need to charge extra and can get a price for you based on where you are. Alternatively, collection from just outside Leek in North Staffs is preferable, or can meet somewhere reasonable for some petrol money. Thanks all, happy to answer any questions, or take additional photos.
  7. Hi all, Having a clear out of some things I don't use that often, so up next is a Moon/Warmoth jazz bass. I picked up the fully-loaded body and tuners last year, and decided to go with a birdseye maple/ebony neck from Warmoth. It also has 'Arizona Blue' dot markers, which look great. Tele-bass headstock, as opposed to the usual J/P headstock. The body is late-70's I think and has original Tom Anderson/Schecter high-output single coils. The neck pickup needed a rewind which was completed by Armstrong pickups last year. They don't have a pickup cover, as was their style at the time. Body wood is Walnut and looks darker in real life than it does on the pictures. Due to its age, it's not in perfect condition, with a couple of smaller dings. It's very comfortable to play and balances nicely. Weight on the scales is 4.46kg or 9.8lbs. Controls are VVT. The tone put is push/pull which brings the bridge pickup out of phase. Not hugely different tones, and I think it could be wired for series/parallel if so desired. The switch is a 3-way pickup selector - neck, both or bridge. The neck is in perfect condition and looks and feels amazing. Warmoth quality is right up there with the best. Truss rod turns with no problems, as you would expect from a brand new neck. Comes with a brass nut. I had this put together for me by Jack's Instrument Services in Manchester back in the summer, but I need to thin the amount of basses I have, so it's up for sale. Price is £750.
  8. I'd be interested in your experience of Tuff Cab, once you start that bit. I've got an old Peavey I wanted to cover in tolex, but painting seems easier and somewhat cheaper. Did you get the Tuff Cab from Blue Aran? Seems a lot of things are out of stock there at the moment. Cheers
  9. Fantastic job. Looks brand new.
  10. Yes! Very nice. I think I saw the same advert and briefly considered it before realising that this isn't an appropriate cab for bedroom playing Looking forward to seeing it come together, and wishing you luck with it!
  11. I'm glad it's gone to someone who has a connection to the bass and I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it. Pictures a plenty, please! 🙂
  12. Very nice. Had one of these a few years back. Great build quality and sounded fantastic. Not sure why I sold it actually. Good luck with the sale.
  13. I'm not sure, can't say I've heard that before. I had an old Blazer with the original pickups which sounded so good.
  14. Another recommendation for tinytone, aka Jack's Instrument Services. Had a few guard from them. Below is 4 ply celluloid tort.
  15. Helpful, as ever. Thanks Bassassin. I'd already seen that website for the trc, as well as repro's of the original knobs. Good to know they're good quality though. The finish isn't terrible, but a fair bit worse than the adverts pictures showed. Maybe that's influenced my train of thought. Thanks all
  16. That's a fair point on sacrilege being reserved for old Fenders, and you're right about me not being too bothered about finding an original preamp. Even if I did, it wouldn't be original to the bass, so more just for completeness than originality. Haha, no nude playing here. There's some chips in the poly where the arm contour would be (these basses don't have an arm contour) so it scrapes slightly, but I play with a plectrum so wouldn't be too big an issue for a finger player. Thanks for your comments
  17. I paid 185 which I think was probably over the odds. Especially considering the state of the paintwork which wasn't accurately described in the listing. That guy has a few YT videos of the restoration of that bass. Sounds great.
  18. Yes, I think you're correct. I've never had an active bass before (despite me owning around 20 or so since I started 😬) so know almost nothing about preamps.
  19. Ooh I might take you up on the knobs. There's a place in the US that does reproduction parts of old Ibanez basses, but they're not cheap. It doesn't actually weigh too much. I was half expecting a boat anchor, but it's very manageable. I was thinking some cream DiMarzio would look authentic, or I've got a set of old Schecter PJ pickups. Will look at the link though, thanks.
  20. Hi folks, I recently picked up an early 80's Ibanez Roadster bass carcass. Bridge, tuners, body, neck and nothing else. Originally I was planning on trying to get parts for it and restore it back to former glory, but the body is in worse condition than anticipated. The poly has multiple cracks and dings, so much so that it isn't comfortable to hold in a playing position. My thoughts turned to stripping it and refinishing and just having it as a passive bass with some nice pickups and a few switchable options. The bass originally had a preamp, but I can't find any 2nd hand or any modern suitable alternative. Plus, I'm kind of a passive guy. My query is whether it's worth just reselling it as it's now vintage and potentially sacrilege to strip an old bass, albeit one that doesn't have a ton of value on the collectors market. Any tips or thoughts? Here's a few pics.
  21. I picked up a 90's Peavey Alphabass which is a 160w all valve bass amp, for about £320ish. You'll struggle for anything cheaper than that which is all valve. Deals do come up on the big iron amps though if you're prepared to wait. I got an Ampeg SVT-II non-pro for 650 a couple of years back. It seems that big valve amps come in and out of favour every few years and people offload them cheaply when the gigs dry up.
  22. Schecter-style! My favourite pickups! Look great. What are the numbers on the bottom of the bobbin? Measurements?
  23. I bought Yannick's Moon jazz bass body and parts. Great comms, quick shipping, top quality item as described. Thank you!
