1.
I use D-tuners on both my MIMs with no problems, and I know some have tuned theirs BEAD using the bottom four strings of a 5 string set with no issues apart from a slight nut tweak, so you should be able to drop the B to an A if required like Korn and Slipknot making it AEAD.
Heh, nut tweak.
2. Welcome from liverpool! I travel through Rock Ferry every day on the miseryrail at the moment, working in chester sucks... Enjoy the forum though, we're not a bad bunch
3. Tube pre, 4 band semi parametric EQ system, simple one knob compressor, volume, mute - maybe a small tuner. about 600 watts. Happy as larry.
4. save the extra £200 but don't get the ampeg, get this... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=137603
5. How does the P play? sounds like a daft question I know but for £50 if its sound (no pun intended) gotta be worth a punt for someone - maybe even me!
6.
Guys thank you, just to let you know it was the valve seats, 2 cleans and all is good, many thanks for the interest in my post! now to find some matching cabs, does it ever stop
Great news! Basschat really does have it's uses eh?
7.
In this instance, I'll refer you to my earlier comments. When the -15db pad isn't engaged, the output from the Yamaha through the Ampeg is OVERWHELMINGLY LOUD! I might try it next time out, but I don't want to risk blowing one of my Warwick when I'm only using one-even with the limiter on constantly. I don't exactly buy top dollar gear, but I do try to look after it.
If anything untoward is happening you'll hear it before it goes, I'm sure! I've never really understood padding you see as I figured you could always just turn the gain down to suit the bass. I could be completely wrong and nothing i've said is worth listening too, though!
8. Man, beautiful bass. If it sounds anything like the SG here I'd be mighty tempted...
9.
As promised, here's an update with how the PF-350'S been holding up. Auditioned a drummer last week. My rig was one of my Warwick 12"s, the Ampeg & my Yamaha BB614. The amp held up pretty well. Again, can be a bit quiet with active basses, but with the volume @ 4, the gain @ 6 & the mids boosted on my bass's EQ, I had a nice workable sound for the duration of the audition. Now that I've hired the drummer, I'll no doubt have fun messing with the EQ on the amp to get the best performance out of it for some time. I have to say to say two things though. Firstly, I'm tempted to trade in the Yamaha for a Squier Vintage Modern P-Bass or Jazz, largely because the amp sounds so much better with passive basses. Secondly, on the strength of the PF-350's size AND tone(I could happily jam away all day THINKING I'm Nate Mendel with this thing! <:-) ;-)), I'm tempted to part-ex my Hartke LH500 for the PF-500! Any thoughts folks?
You know you don't have to use the pad when using an active bass right? If it's cutting the output so much on an active bass then the output of your active bass might not be hot enough to warrant padding it. Give it a whirl and report back!
10.
not sure how what would work
Tell me about it! I've tried using slim fast as lube to speed things up a little but it just ended up smelling funny. Fortunately my neighbour who incidently used to be my physics teacher lent me some... And now my bike runs nice and smooth!
11. Elixirs Elixirs Elixirs! I do rabbit on about them but there arent many strings I havn't tried over the years. I find the Average amount of life I get out of most sets is 2/3 weeks. Roto's where less, DR slightly more. My elixirs last 9 months at the lowest point and even then I don't notice a huge amount of difference when I change them over.
12.
Personally, I don't buy the polarity issue..and I'd try and borrow another amp and see if that is any better. If you run 2 GS112's against a VERY loud drummer/band, you'll blow your ears before you run out of steam on the cabs, IMO.
Why not? If you've ever used noise cancelling headphones you'll find the effect of reversing sound waves astounding. And with 2 cabs playing simultaneously and not having to be processed first I would imagine the effect to be even more efficient.
13. If its just for practice get yourself some cheapish in-ear headphones. Much easier for them to create decent bass SPL in your ears. Over ear headphones are always going to struggle IMO.
14.
Bit of a pain to take to a gig lol
yeah but he was never going to gig with that little thing anyway. If I had the space I would totaly build speakers into my desk.
15.
Are the BB424s any better than the 414s? I had a 414, and despite it being a great bass, I was never truly happy with the natural response or sound of the ir. I put an Aguilar OBP2 preamp in it, but there was still something missing. Because the pickups are an unusual shape, you can't replace them easily without faffing around chopping wood out. I would really quite like an 80's style rock bass (jackson sorta style, pointy headstock etc) but there don't seem to be any decent used ones about, or anything similar new with the right pickup config. I did see the Peavey Zodiac; does anyone have any experience of these?
IME, yes, the 424 really is quite substantially better than the 414. I think its the through body stringing and 5 piece neck, the elctronics are the same as far as I know but the 424 definitely has a fuller, rounder tone.
16.
i'd imagine that the cabinet would be very important when you get down to this size. i used to use a pair of bookshelf hi-fi speakers my dad made as a bass cab - it sounded ok at low vols irrc. i've still got the speakers somewhere...they were only a few inches across
If you've got the wood and a spare desk why not build some speakers into the desk? Maybe work out a way of porting it around the sides or something. That's something I'd LOVE to see. Guitar open backed in the middle then ported bass either side. Awesome.
17. Its a shame Roland gear doesn't hold its value too great, these are cracking. You dont see many of these rigs around but I used one at a gig in Accrington ages ago, is there any chance it was your band we where playing with?
18. Another suggestion that the cabs might be out of phase with each other here. A quick rewire (of the cabs or the leads, but not both!) will sort this out. I used to have a pair of warwick cabs, an ND12 and ND15 and there was no volume when cranked, whipped the speaker out of one and crossed the wires over and boom, job done
19. I was about to click blue/green without a second thought, then I had a second thought... The red is much classier IMO and would look awesome with a suit. I like suits. Red it is.
20. It would look (and sound, no doubt) awesome with a Dark Star pickup instead of the split p.
21. Cheap, tonally wonderful, solid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRVYmPxebgk
22.
+1. Ed is an absolutely legend, I've messaged him before to thank him for no BS in his reviews.
I always have ed friedland in mind whenever I review a bass. I want to hear how versatile it is tonally and then pick my favorite/necessary tones from there.
23.
Reaper. £25 instead of £370 for Logic, and it seems to be as fully featured. Amazing!
+1!
24. On further inspection it seems the minimum ohmage for the Orange is 4, So no, I'm afraid you couldnt!
