1. A little bit of progress to show. I have made a neck blank, it's a 5 piece laminate of maple and walnut. I'm going all out for rigidity here, the maple is almost perfectly quartersawn and I will be adding carbon rods either side of the truss rods. I used this method on a fretless neck for my other current bass build which is a stingray style and it worked out quite well. I'm going with the rosewood fingerboard, it's marked out ready for slotting, and I will probably put a maple headstock veneer on the front because although I like the look of a laminated neck from the rear I'm not so keen on the walnut stripes on the heastock, I prefer a cleaner look ( even though I used to own a Wal which I adored ! ). I've started flattening the scratched lacquer. Quite odd this one, there are no marks or scratches on the sides, no buckle rash or button scratches on the tummy cut, but loads of scuffs and scratches on the front and back. It's almost as if it was taken apart and the body stored inbetween something. I've been looking at bridges too, I found this one on e-bay, from Black Dog Music. It's the correct dimensions, string spacing etc. and can be through body or back strung, so I could experiment with string tensions. It's reasonably priced, looks solid and quite adjustable and its made by Sung IL (I've at least heard of them!) Anyone got experince of this bridge or Black Dog Music? 5. Not keen on maple necks with block markers, but that's just me, however that scratchplate is very elegant. Wonder if they do shoreline gold with rosewood?
6. I'm intrigued.......a man with a collection of goitars, who can play them too! No offence... a goiter is an inflamed gland (fnar fnar) to do with your thyroid, and don't get me started about thyroids Good luck anyway
7. The nearest thing I've seen is this site with a valve preamp http://www.madamp.biz/
8. Never heard of these before, but it looks quite tidy for the money, anyone got any experience of them? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exlusive-Fusion-5-Active-Bass-Black-Alder-Body-Maple-Neck-/290653159343?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43ac473faf
9. Just got this delivered today. It's a G&L2500 body I found on Gumtree for a very reasonable £15. The neck pocket says July 03. Not sure if it's from an American model or a Tribute (which I think are non-American) It still has the string ferrules but nothing else, and the lacquer has lots of very fine scratches on it. I'm hoping that the finish will polish up OK, there is one shallow dent on the upper horn but I can live with that......the best thing is there are no breaks or cracks in the finish. I'm not intending to try to clone a G&L2500, but this has saved me some time and work as I was about to start on a 5 string Stingray style build. I have a pickup and electronics from a Dean bass (Sledgehammer I think) which will do for starters, some Shaller BM's and I will make a neck to fit it. I have a couple of fingerboards I could use, one rosewood and one ebony, I'm thinking the rosewood one looks better, the ebony I think I will keep for a second (fretted) neck for my ongoing Blingray build. Or maybe an all maple neck and fingerboard would look best.......any suggestions? I will need to get a string through bridge for it as well, can anyone recommend one. I like the look of Hipshot A style which is availabe as string through, but they are a bit pricey over here.....are they worth the extra? I could, at a push, drill a suitable non-string through bridge and adapt it. I will add a second pickup later, but for now I want to get it up and going. If I like the end results enough I will change the electrics for better quality ones.
10. You can buy the veneer in sheets, its called constructional veneer. I get it from Anita Marquetry http://www.anitamarq...rs__1_5mm_.html Usually its 2mm thick and available in plain wood or dyed (the dye runs all the way through so its ok on an edge where it wil be sanded afterwards) Here is an example where i used dyed black veneer on a thinline Tele build inbetween the mahogany body and the redwood top. I've also used it on a neck where it went between the neck and the fingerboard and then blended into a headstock veneer, again on a Tele build I use Titebond to glue it without problems, but be sure to clamp it down properly as you would when gluing a topset on. On the subject of the "Wal look"....I'm currently doing a Blingray build....a stingray built just as you describe in the style of a Wal (I used to have a lovely fretless custom back in the 80's and I'm still pining for it!). I'm using cherry veneers on this one, with a walnut core and claro walnut facings. If you get contrasting coloured wood and veneer the effect can be stunning. Where you ask about the cutaway on the Wal, I presume you mean where you can see the veneer appear to get wider, the body would be constructed with a mahogany core, then the veneers on the front and back then the facings. When the edge roundovers are done the veneers are level with the sides but when the cutaways are done for the forearm and ribs the veneers are cut into at an angle which gives them a wider profile. Different people have different ways of doing the cutaways, some use handtools such as rasps and the like, some use power tools Hope this helps
11. what about this one then?.....good price he would have us believe. It reminds me of something else, a Pedulla maybe, but it looks well knocked together and the website looks professional I'm embarrased to say I've never heard of them and he reckons he's the best UK builder http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/handmade-custom-bass-guitar-/330670272981?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4cfd7bf1d5
12. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Precision-P-Bass-Guitar-Maple-Neck-Cherry-Tulip-Wood-Body-/140680872714?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item20c13bc30a nice workmanship, odd that he hasn't put a makers name on it though. Like the hidden pickup, but it needs something for your thumb

16. keep your eye on this one, no bids as yet so you might be lucky http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STATUS-Groove-BASS-electric-Guitar-4-string-/220928167050?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item3370584c8a someone was selling a body with all the hardware but minus the neck on e-bay this week, I looked last night and it was less than £40. It ended sometime today but I've no idea what the final price was. I would have had a punt myself but I've just found a 5 string G&L 2500 body on Gumtree for £15....yes please!!!!!
17. I've got an early Fender Pro junior, simple amp......15w, class A, vol and tone control but it sounds and records great, gets on very well with pedals too. Looks cool with its blonde tolex. The thing to remember is that these 'small' valve amps are still loud esplecially for home use...but there's so many to choose from you'll eventually find the right one. Harmony Central is good for user reviews
18. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Guitar-Neck-/290655460807?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43ac6a5dc7 although the seller does not directly claim it to be a genuine late 60's neck he is clearly hoping to sell it as such.........he's stretching things a bit to say its exactly the same as on the link but the decal looks accurate, nothing else does though !
19. If there is a piece which has been gauged out and lost, steaming won't completely work, it's great if you have a dent because it does uncompress the dented wood.......if the chip is missing there is nothing there to uncompress. If you are handy with a small chisel or stanley knife you could try removing a small piece of wood from an area such as the control cavity or the bottom of a pickup cavity (where it won't show) and patch it in with some sawdust and glue - try to ensure the grain runs in the same direction........but any repair is a compromise and will rarely be completely invisible good luck
20. Nice one Goblin, I actually got first dibs on that one but he preferred it to be collected rather than couriered (if that's the right word) and then by the time I'd realised my sister could have collected it he had promised it to you........aaaaargh! I would have loved it too, all the sound clips I've heard of them sound rather nice, and it looks very classy. So enjoy it and look after it and if it ever needs a new home remember me
