1.
I've just had Jon Shuker build me a sublime bass, the easiest design process via email I've encountered. Alan's ACGs are also fantastic, his lead times are why I didn't pick one of them, and also his shapes are all too Jazz-y for me, but might suit you. I will say, though, that nearer you are to definite and settled on your design requirements, the happier you'll be with the finished results. I knew EXACTLY what I wanted, and when I got it, executed by Jon with what I can only describe as artistry, I was very happy indeed. If you go down the luthier route with any vagueness, you run the risk of disappointing yourself, and then you'll be left with an instrument with a terrifying residual value.
You chose Shuker over ACG because the Shuker lead time was shorter??
2.
what he said - I picked my Hellborg preamp up partly because 2x18's nice power amp needed more output than it could give
You mean the Hellborg didn't have enough output for the power amp? This compatibility is tricky to know in advance, as not many preamp manufacturers state the output levels. I had to contact Glockenklang (who were great) to ensure that my head's preamp had enough output for the Crown. For the Avalon, I've just had to go on anecdotal web stuff where people have said that they've happily run their U5 with a Crown power amp.
3. Have you seen this? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/237669-2014-bacchus-woodline-dx-ltd-exotic-wood-range/page__pid__2459774#entry2459774
4. You could have bought my Crown XTi2000 but as of yesterday, I've pulled it from the marketplace to use in my rig with a preamp (Avalon U5) As soon as I have the rig up and running and gigged it a few times, I'll let you know my thoughts.
5.
I've got an OC3 too. A very fast chorus at the end of the chain is good for DnB sounds.
Stop it! I'm skint :-D
6. ...and the above has happened, so this is now withdrawn from sale
7. Good call, thanks chaps. I've got a 2.5m iron cable and plug, and a separate 'kettle' plug. Should be just the ticket
8. Haha Nothing wrong with a waney edge in the right context - I have 'Fred Flintstone' shelves in my lounge. IMO this has been done by someone who has a moderate woodwork ability (machined dovetails and other rudimentary jointing) and a poor sense of design God knows what it sounds like. As an experienced cabinet maker, even I'd rather leave the acoustic cabinet stuff to the experts. Can you even have an open-backed cab for bass?
9. Hahah, I wasn't expecting that! I like the ironic way that he refers to his 'better half'
10. Using the XLR balanced line out to the PA is exactly the right thing to do. The XLR input would be for plugging in a double bass pickup
11.
That's the Sleng Teng bass line, I think it was played on an SH-101, but yeah an OC-2 will give you the basis of it but you'll be missing a bit of the crispiness of the higher frequencies. With my gear I'd run an OC-2 into my Bugcrusher to add in some treble content and then use my Xerograph to filter some of the really high stuff out. It's worth noting though that the OC-2 does sound different depending on the signal you feed it with, and you might get something close to that by putting a distortion before the OC-2. Avoid chorus, that won't work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjw7m-BKmQ8
Great info, thanks. I've actually just bagged an OC3 for cheap on the marketplace, so looking forward to playing with it. I have a Xerograph, so it should come in handy. I'm thinking this tone will come in handy for the more Dancehall style songs we do too
12. I have a bit of a thing about my cables being flexible. You know, the type which bend really easily, and stay that way when you let go. Not stiff plastic, but nice bendy rubber. I'm sorted for speaker/instrument cables, but really want a nice bendy mains 'kettle' lead. Any recommendations? Thanks
13. I've been checking out different octavers on Yt this morning. This one amuses me - you can tell by the settings that as soon as he switches it on, it will make no noise. Switch>silence>hasty tweak. And that's the one he uploads to YT :-D Surely that's a key part of preparation? (Apologies if you're a Basschatter, but it is quite funny) http://youtu.be/k3wlIVxC0UQ
14.
If there's any way you can get the valves checked over then you should definitely do this whilst it's still covered by warranty.
I believe that this amp, because it's a sale item, is 'sold as seen' so I'm guessing there's no warranty
15. Great stuff, thanks folks. I've checked out some YT vids. There's a really clear Subterrenea demo, and it sounds superb. I love the clean octave sounds, but the as soon as you start to kick in the filter and waveforms, I can already get a lot of those sounds with my existing pedals. The Boss OC2 seems like a good bet. It sounds good enough clean, but would also be fun mixing in drive/fuzz/LPF/Expression pedal too. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the Sub! Thanks a lot folks
16. One of our new songs has a kind of old-skool rave vibe, and I'd like to get a tone like that in the following video (bass starts at 0:30). I'm assuming this is keyboard bass, but any pointers on approximating it on bass guitar please? Thanks http://youtu.be/xI8S1Nn6NRk
17. Not surprised the LB is louder - I have a 100w valve amp which is way louder than my 440w solid state one
18.
It's the only option, really...
...to live in once you're divorced
19. Good man! Coincidentally, I was going to post a 'talk me out of my amp GAS' thread today, but decided against it at the last minute. Glad I didn't now :-D
20.
Er... I mean, no... don't buy it. It's too heavy, you can't easily hide it from your partner and it will be expensive to maintain. Is that better..?
Ah, redeemed yourself :-D
21.
I had one back in the day and they are the quintessential bass amp bar none. ...If you don't buy it, I will!
Way to talk him out of it Mark
22. They are really really heavy. Ummmm....that's it Sorry
23.
Don't think it's an issue a chapman stick player has ever had to worry about.
LOL
24. I tried a wood-bodied/graphite-necked bass recently, and was surprised and impressed at how warm it sounded. It blew my preconceptions about 'sterile' graphite out of the water. Coming together nicely Kiwi, these look great!
