1.
Woah! If I press the E string at the first and last frets it touches all the frets all the way along the neck!!
You definitely need to put some relief in that neck then!
2. Is the fret buzzing just certain frets or over most of the board? If it most of it, just raise the saddles slightly. I still get some fretbuzz from my MIM Jazz, but as I doesn't come through the amp, I can live with it. By the way, nice looking bass!
3. I have just got rid of two basses in an effort to streamline. I had an Ibanez SR300 and a GSR200 that just sat there gathering dust. Whilst I would love to open a Museum of Stringed Instruments in my house, I cannot justify the expense or the room for equipment I don't use at least occasionally, and the CSA seem to agree!
4. Had the same problem myself in the past. We had a "band meeting" (few beers) and exited those who were unreliable and replaced them. Whilst the new guitarist is not as good, he turns up every week, is enthusiatic and learns the songs before rehearsal. So maybe we don't sound as good as we used to, but at least we are now gigging regularly again!
5. The Precision is called "Bob", and as the Jazz is just that bit classier, it's called "Robert".
6.
I can't quite see in the pics, but did you attach the bridge cover with screws? Ie., did you actually drill holes in a brand new bass??? If so, you're a braver man than me!
It is screwed but it was already on when I got it, so I asked about it in the shop, and they said that was how it arrived from the distributor. As you say, it's not shown on the website, so who knows!
is there a skunk stripe on the rosewood board P and J?
Nope, standard one piece maple neck with no skunk strip or "wings" for the headstock. Very comfortable to play as well.
7. Not just a fake, but a poor one at that. Ibanez "Fenders" of that era were well made, but that one has some of the cheapest hardware I have ever seen.
8. Some of ours: Walking The Dog - The Stooges Foxy Lady - Jimi Hendrix Pretty Vacant - The Sex Pistols Under The Bridge - RHCP The Ballad of Chasey Laine - The Bloodhound Gang Basket Case - Green Day Children Of The Revolution - T. Rex Black Night - Deep Purple Hash Pipe - Weezer Kids In America - Kim Wilde Heart Of Glass - Blondie For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica War Pigs - Black Sabbath
9. Cliff Burton RIP.....laid back, hair spinning while playing the best metal bass ever (apologies to Mr. Harris).
10. Some virtuoso musicians do leave me a little cold. Whilst I respect them and wish I had their technique, being "flash" for the sake of it is just a bit tedious. It is especially bad with guitarists, some of whom seem to think trem arm abuse and high "widdle" rate compensate for feel and whether it evens fits in the song.
11. Couple of hours a week with one band, not currently gigging, so more for a laugh/socialising, justifying owning loads of gear and learning material than anything else. Three hours a week with the other band, now gigging and starting to write our own material, so a bit more intensive. I try to break it up a bit with cigarette breaks however!
12. Pictures as promised. I had to use the shop's photo's as my camera is playing up, but this is the actual bass I bought. Needless to say I have now removed the cheesy sticker!
13. Keep the chrome bridge but get those chrome knobs with the black pearl tops to match. "I think it is a fantastic colour, and not at all girly." Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen
14. Has anyone else got one of these beauties yet? This morning I've tried out the range at Machinehead in Hitchin and I have to say I am very impressed. All three are great, the Jazz sounded like a Jazz, the 50's Precision was very cool but the 60's Precision was brilliant. It is even better in my humble opinion than the Vintage Modified Jazz. The new HiMass bridge functions very well, adding depth and the pickups are decent too, so much so, I won't be changing them. It even has a bridge cover (not shown on the Squier website) to make it even more classy! Couple this with a neck that is as good as any MIM I have tried recently and I think Squier are on to another winner. So go and try these, and don't be surprised when you take one home with you!
15. I tried the Line 6 and Ashdown Electric Blue combos, but came home with the Marshall MB4210. Plenty of headroom (300w, 450 with extension cab), 3 footswitchable tones (modern, classic and blend) and a valve pre-amp giving fantastic tone. I use it for practice at home as well as rehearsing/gigging, and it works well at lower volume. The common comment about Marshall not having a good history as far as bass amps go is semi-valid (Entwhistle and Lemmy aside), but that is changing. Even Squier make decent basses now!
16. Having changed my setup (again), I now take two basses along to rehearsals and gigs, not just for reliability issues, but "tonal" reasons as well. My Jazz basses have very different sounds, so I change during the set dependant on the requirements of the song. I also agree a DI box is indispensible, as I have gone through headline act rigs just to find their amps are terrible sounding, and not having brought an amp, swiftly fall back on DI box into the PA.
17. Does that now mean a Vintage Icon bass is now worth more than the Fender it copies? And why does no-one manufacture a model called "Dubious Sounding Heavy Metal" bass, and until they do, do I have to stop playing?
18. I replaced the stock pickups in my MIM Jazz with some of these and it made a real difference, both in tone and output.
19. I got mine through Coda Music in Stevenage, gave me a great deal too.
20. Having recently decided to upgrade my rig (from an Ibanez GSR through a Zoom B2 into the PA. Cheap as chips!), I went in expecting to spend about £2000. Having tried 6 amps and 17 basses, I came away with a MIM Jazz (plus new bridge and pickups), Ibanez SR300 and a Marshall MB 4210, so with the unexpected change, I'm buying a car to get to rehearsals! I tried lots of expensive basses, but those two felt right to me, and the Marshall gave the volume and tone I wanted. So each to their own, I just hope people are buying what is right for THEM, not because of what is written on the headstock or resale value.
21. Badge - Cream Ace of Spades - Motorhead Come Together - The Beatles
22. The non-Prestige Ibanez models come with D'Addario strings as standard, only the high end Prestige models come with Elixirs. So your GSR would have come with D'Addario XL strings.
23. If you like the feel of your current bass, why not go for either the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz or a MIM Fender Jazz?
24. So is the "Breakdown" nickname undeserved then?
