1.
Thats because they are all for sale here!
It is true. I waited more than 5 months for mine (collected in July) but BD seem to be operating a 'running order' with regular NG-2 deliveries so if you time it right you could drop on with no wait time. Keep 'em peeled for deliveries to BD - or just pop into the For Sale thread and pick one up from there! ps...mine is rare...in that it's not for sale here!
  2.
Habit; his crew probably set up for a full gig regardless.
That will be it. I've got one of those rubber pick-strip that I put on my mic stand. I've dropped picks during gigs before but I swap after a few songs normally because they get a bit sweaty and slippy. I also have a habit of throwing them at drummers so I need a few spares.
  3.
What's the verdict on the DG Tone Capsule. They look like a great idea with dual mid controls.
I like it. Is that verdict enough? I can't be anymore technical than that I'm afraid. I love its aggressive tone and the EQ has massive amounts of adjustment - all of which I ignore and leave centred. I'm replacing the Warwick preamp in my '93 Streamer with a Tone Capsule. You can run the Tone Capsule at 9V or 18V if you wish - the NG-2's run 18V. I'm planning on squeezing two batteries into the tiny Streamer cavity too.
  4.
About the same price as a good Fender bass but far better quality and value for money. This was probably top of my budget for a new bass but 2nd hand could probably have got a bit cheaper. If you are thinking of changing then give it some serious thought as they are outstanding IMO. Nice write up in the collective. Impressive set of Dingwalls you have there.
Ta! I'm lucky that my SO lets me have my toys!
  5. The NG-2 is a seriously nice bass. I love mine. I don't change the settings at all - volume full, pre-amp on, pickups series and tone controls centred. Fed through a B3K into big box of valves and its mega. I'm currently having a '93 Warwick Streamer LX refinished, and the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp is going in that too. I'm in the Collective!! 6. Nope, no nerves for me. I have an ego the size of a house so I love them! I've done shoots with previous bands where a couple of the members got all giggly. We kicked them out of the room while the guitarist and I had our shots done. The result was that our shots were really good and we had dozens to choose from, and theirs weren't. I've found that having an idea of what you want in advance helps - but that might be a bit late since your shoot is today. if you've got a couple of hours its worth a web trawl of your inspirations though. The key for me is to get into stage mode and if you have an 'alter-ego' just let let that take over. Enjoy!
  7. And I'm back in the room... A whole load of points have been raised, so here's my justification / position to explain slightly further what I said earlier... Reasons I take two basses to the Paul Henshaw gigs... I play my basses like I hate them. I play hard so no matter how reliable / well built / expensive my basses are the possibility exists that things might fail. So far it's only been strings at gigs but I like to be prepared. I have had two machine heads fail on my cheap-ish Crafter acoustic bass and one on my Warwick Streamer Stage I. I can't carry two of all my equipment, but guitars, leads and strings are guaranteed. Reasons I will take two basses to the Ludovico gigs... Different tunings is the requirment...and to be a flash so and so. It's a rock band after all and my ego demands that I play up to that stereotype!
  8.
Sure, but then there are people who bring two and three basses to a gig in the pub so they get "the right tone" for a few songs in the setlist, which I find a bit perplexing.
I'll be taking two basses to gigs in the Dog and Duck. Not for tone, but because I need different tunings...and there is one song I just can't play on the fan frets. The stretch bloody kills me!
  9.
It seems that most of you are saying that it's generally just an act of hedonistic consumerism. Interesting.
Thats me. I don't need the gear I have. I could get the sound from much less expensive equipment I'm sure. I am an unashamed brand-snob. Absolutely no doubt. Not that I look down on people who don't have the most expensive kit - I don't - , I just choose to set my budget a little higher and I'm lucky enough to be able to do that and still pay the bills. Can I justify what I have spent on equipment? In a business sense? No. Not even slightly! But I don't have to...which is quite nice.
  10. Motley Crue - Motley Crue Vince Neil replaced by John Corabi. A bit heavier wth a much better singer. The problem was the dyed-in-the-wool Crue fans never accepted Corabi so Vince was brought back in.

    Dingwall

There are a few things that are 'better quality' on the Canadian models, but the NG2 is a really nice instrument. I imagine that because the instruments are QC checked in Canada, that carrys a lot of weight with folk who don't like 'cheap chinese tat'. Chinese or not, they certainly don't feel cheap to me. All the posts from buyers on the Dingwall forum mention how impressed they are with the NG2 build quality - and I am too. What you get with the Canadian models is a higher spec than the Combustion / NG2, so like all questions like this I think the only answer is spend some time playing both and see what you think. From my own view - I love my ABZ and the NG2. I want another Dingwall - but if I did place an order it would be for a Canadian build model - purely for the customisation options that you can't get on the Combustions - but it would certainly use the Darkglass preamp from the NG2 From memory the cheapest 5 string ABZ is about £1850 in Bass Direct - 2 years ago I paid more than that for my ABZ4. The Combustions start from about £1040 (again from memory), with the NG-2 being another £200+ on top. I've still got the ABZ4 and bought a NG2 last month. How about that for a non-answer!
  12. Have you bought yet Dave? Come on kidda....pull ya finger out!
  13.
...but I would not recommend switching to 5 strings and fanned frets at once...
Erm...oops? Not quite true for me, but its still a bloody jump! On another note, my ABZ sounds completely different to the NG2, which uses the Darkglass Tone Capsule preamp.
  14. Exactly what my signature say "Hit the fat string...lots." My theory being that that will be the 'biggest / loudest / hardest' note I play all night - so thats waht I check with...open fat string. I don't noodle furiously or double-hand tap or anything fancy during a set, so its counter-productive to soundcheck with it. Give the sound guy a chance!
  15.
Actually Headsticks do great in a small local pub, but in a local "venue" not so well. Going further afield to venues where people turn up expecting original music works very well. Weird!
I think that is a quirk of Stoke to be honest. We play in Shrewsbury regularly (Paul is from there) and we always do pretty well.
P.S I didn't know you had a bodran, didn't you have a full kit last time I saw you?
We did, but you know what its like with bands and member changes.
  16. I agree with what cheddatom said about an originals band being able to entertain folk all night. I know his band, and one of the bands I play with is in the same (ish) genre - you can make it work. We even make it work without a drum kit - we have a bodhran player. Ever heard Ace of Spades played with a bodhran? You should! The set is split 60/40 I've set up a new band recently - doing purely rock covers. By that I mean Motley Crue, Skid Row, Alice in Chains, Extreme, Queensryche, Poison etc. None of what is popularly deemed 'pub rock standards'. Maybe its just where I live, but Stoke seems to have a thriving 'rock' covers scene with numerous bands playing 2 or 3 nights every week. We also have a female singer - with only one song in the set originally sung by a female vocalist. Am I bothered that we have selected none of the Sex on Dakota / Mustang over the Water type tracks? Hell no - in fact its a positive aim to not include them! Sod the punters - this band is unashamedly about us! (We also have no desire to be gigging twice per week either so limiting our venues is not a problem)
  17. If you can get to a dealer that stocks them then you can give them a try - or find someone here who is local to you and see if you can try theirs. I've got a 4 and 5 - I found the swap to 5 to be by far the biggest issue - its not beyond a bit of practice and familiarity though.
  18. Erm...Genz Benz Streamliner 900 into my Bergantino HD112.
  19. I do find the fan fret Dingwalls slightly more awkward on a strap than a parallel fret instrument, but then I play with my bass fairly low. I'm finding octaves slightly challenging on the NG2 because of the strap length. The easy option is to raise the bass - but vain as I am thats not happening! On my knee playing fan frets is a doddle. With practice swapping between fan and parallel frets isn't a problem. My biggest issue is the NG2 is my first serious jump to 5 strings - so to add the fan frets aswell makes it more of a culture shock. I have adapted my style somewhat when using the NG2, and have moved some phrases to other positions (ie higher string with lower fret positions) As longtimefred said to me "A B string to make people's poo fall out" makes up for it though!
  20. Erm....have you tried Ampeg?
