1. Yeah what an incredible and underrated talent. The whole of the "Seven Seas" album is outstanding, very much my kind of thing. I know there are a few Esbjorn Svensson fans on the forum, I urge them all to give Avishai a good listen.
2.
They're all chords within the key of E: III(7) VI II V(sus)
thanks again, sorry to keep on at you, I was just being an idiot about the III dominant 7, I was thinking it had a major third in there because it wasn't minor but of course that's not the case. thanks again guys *facepalm*
3.
It's all in E. The verse chords are: D/E, E.
thanks for the reply even if it's in E though I'm still not sure where the bridge chords come from?
4. Not sure if anyone knows this motown classic well enough to help me out..? It starts with an E7 in the verse, then goes up to an A major, then back down to E7.. which all makes sense enough. I think technically this puts it in the key of A major (since E7 must be the V degree) but if I'm wrong please let me know. What I'm really struggling with is the modulation in the bridge - it goes up to a G#7, C#m, F#m, B7sus... for the life of me, I can't figure out what key that modulation is! I think I'm just being dense because it doesn't sound too complicated, but I just can't get my head around the theory of it. if anyone could give me a hand, I'd be very grateful cheers!
5. you should definitely see your doc if you haven't been already, he'll be able to do a couple of quick tests to make an accurate diagnosis and either treat you or tell you what you should/shouldn't do etc. be sure to mention you are a muso - can impact upon decisions
6.
I'm with you.. Phwoar.....
image NSFW.
7.
Unfortunately,it's not as simple as just filling in the gaps instinctively. You really should understand what works over what chords. Just busking it from the root note alone isn't enough.
+1, unfortunately the more you know about walking bass the more you know you don't know. I used to think I could get by OK, and there wasn't much competition back home so I still got gigs, but in retrospect I was really just faffing about. I've been playing the guitar pretty much exclusively for the last couple of years and recently started exploring jazz guitar. Knowing all the chords and modes from that perspective has really helped me conceptualize what's going on in the bass and why it's so important to know your theory inside out.. I'm thinking it's time I returned back to the bass to do it properly myself, but this time trying to look at the big picture and not just take each chord as it comes. hope it goes well for you OP
8. He was on fire at the barbican last year, especially playing with such an established bunch of musicians all over. A very talented musician and a great showman.
9. swansea man disguised as a londoner welcome to basschat!
10. agree with all of these. although surprised with all the jam mentions that no-one has called this one:
11. just a bump for antoria in general... my mates dad had a hollowbody antoria guitar from a similar year and it really was killer, no matter how much I begged he wouldn't sell it. nice looking bass - if I needed a fretless i'd probably take it for that price.
12. http://www.ted.com/talks/charles_limb_your..._on_improv.html that's a great talk on some ideas about what's actually going on in the brain when creativity is happening. obviously a huge topic and the amazing thing about the brain is the more we study it the more complicated it gets.. some years back when the optical lobe was identified, it would appear to serve a simple enough function - processing sight. as it goes it tends to be active in all sorts of activities, as demonstrated in the video (and in lectures we've been given a few more examples). creativity to me is finding the ghost in the machine, although of course it means something different to everyone. as for what art is - it is definitely very difficult if not impossible to define as mentioned earlier in the thread. although I think the common factor for art is expression.
13. was on the phone with a very talented guitarist friend of mine just now who just bought one of these and he was raving about it. have a bump on him!
14.
So am I the only one then? Am I the only one whose "feel" is greatly affected by the instrument?
Count me in. I'm sure it's largely psychological but it's definitely a factor. I used to have a warwick corvette a few years ago, very funky bass - everytime I picked it up I'd come out with insane stu zender style grooves. When I pick up the stingray now though I always automatically just dig in hard near the bridge, and it's more disco or funk rock. I guess it means I'm just not as controlled a player (fine by me as I don't want to be a pro, I just play for fun) but I definitely feel like it's the instrument which gives me the inspiration.

16.
Was the music in 28 Days Later all done by Godspeed You, Black Emporer?
just one track I think, "east hastings" - but the film makers edited it fairly extensively. all the soundtracks above have been great, I think I'll have to add "American Psycho" though for film incorporation. possibly the best use of 'Sussudio' ever.
17. bollucks! I bought a DC59 a few months ago for almost double that, and I live in swansea when I'm not at uni too. FWIW, these guitars are great, and for the money you really can't go wrong!

20. Up for donation is my lot of old PC gaming accessories. Much of it got many happy hours of use back when I had free time, but what little free time and space I have these days is devoted to music... So here is a lot of joysticks/gamepads and the such - and the condition for them going is that they go together! anything you don't want to use you will have to drop off at the dump, but to be honest all of it should be pretty useful. I haven't tried any of it in years, and most of it (spare one of the gamepads which is USB) goes through the MIDI port and I don't even have one of those on my computer now so I couldn't test it for you even if I did have the time. But it was all good quality kit a few years ago and all of it worked perfectly when I put it into storage so it should still work now. So let's have a look at what's going here: going clockwise from bottom... 1: Microsoft SideWinder steering wheel and pedals, with PSU. Back in the day this cost the best part of £100, and what a stunning piece of kit!! Driving games have never been the same without it. Worked a beaut. 2: Logic3 USB PC gamepad, as new, 8-way DPad, turbo, slow, clear and 10 other buttons (4 under right thumb, L/R 1/2, and then 9 and 10 in the middle). 3: 2x Logic3 PC PowerPad... ABCD buttons with off/turbo/auto switches for all four of them (plus DPad obvs) 4: Amstrad AJ-5 Joystick - what a classic, I remember playing with this one my dads old amstrad PC back in 1994... can't even describe how lovingly I look at this. 2 buttons, multidirectional stick with X/Y bias faders 5: Technoplus Hawk+ Joystick - two buttons, one under the thumb and one trigger. two bias faders and an auto switch. also two switches on the back that I don't understand? maybe they flip the axis... try it out for me!! 6: Saltek X7-32 Joystick - same setup as technoplus, but with A and B toggle switches too. Honestly a good looking bunch there and all in great condition considering their age. Even if you're only after one gamepad/joystick, I'd recommend trying them all out and finding the one that suits you so you can throw out the rest yourself. Ideally picked up from my parents house in Swansea, but get in touch if you're interested regardless. Cheers!
21.
that's cos a damaged gibson doesn't have a headstock
Sad but true! have seen it happen twice. surely jackson should get some marketing points for the use of jenna jameson?
22. not doom - almost the polar opposite infact - super high res, high pitched... but for me it's a peak of tracendental rock... perhaps my favourite band? so f'n bleak...
23. My jazz takes pretty much all of my gigs these days. I sometimes think it sounds a little bit thin (especially as I tend to play big band, soul, ska - where the bass is a bit more exposed than rock) compared to my active basses... but I fix that by using a compressor (well adjusted to complement my dynamics rather than to antagonise them!). Honestly with a compressor, that jazz could take on the world!
24. I've played this bass and it's f'n incredible... honestly if I didn't already have too many 4-stringers I'd be buying it myself, someone should snap this up! dan is a tidy bloke too.
