1. Well i gave it a go learning quite a few of the set list but found i wasn't really happy playing "pop" songs so decided to take "Blue's" advice and step out and let someone else have a go that wanted to play that kind of music to make some money. The band are mates and there was no animosity in fact they thanked me for being up front and honest about it and appreciated the fact i didn't wait until they had started gigging and decided to leave. I'm still in another covers band with 3 off them and i think the female vocalist is now about to join the covers band so that should be good as she has an incredible voice. All's well that ends well i guess. Dave
2.
That's a shame but understandable. He has a lot of other gear related projects on the go too, and he's of an age where he wouldn't want to be shifting heavy amps about. You weren't by any chance the punter in Live Music Edinburgh asking about getting an Ampeg looked at about a month ago were you?
No afraid not. I went to Glasgow Studio Electronics and he found some dodgy plugs and few solder joints. Dave
3. VID not available ? Dave
4.
I have to share one early experience. We played a rough local pub, we were brilliant (for us anyway) in the first set but something went in the second set but by then the punters were well watered and we went down a storm. At the end of the set the landlord disappeared, he's apparently 'gone to bed' according to the bouncers protecting the stairwell. They then had a conversation, decide we were well worth the money, charged up the stairs, frogmarched the landlord down and stood over him whilst he counted out what was owed! Only in the West Country
Now that's a nice story. Like it. Dave
5. Played Love Really Hurts last year with a band and it was a great feeling to play it right and everyone could just feel the song. Then the singer wanted to cahnge the key and it kinda lost its feel. Still a great song from this legend. Dave
6. Surely Rics are about same price as an American P or J. You get same opinions on Fender. Some people like em and some don't rate them at all. Each to their own. Dave
7.
A full-size photo pinned to the wall could scratch that itch, perhaps..?
8. I had one in early 80's and it was a reasonable enough build quality. Don't recall any great issues with it. My main gripe was that it was a one trick pony to me. It couldn't give me the same variation of tones that other basses could. Think i bought a Jazz bass after it. Must admit to loving the look of them and nearly bought one last year but decided to go for Fender PJ instead. Might still get one tho. They are an iconic looking bass. Dave
9. Think there are some parts of it that seem to fit reasonably well and altho i quite liked the clip i wouldn't go out and buy it. Dave
10.
Yes if you can pull-off the timing and feel you're there
Yep that's the hard part in getting that feel he has. Dave
11. When you see him play it on the clip it doesn't look as difficult as first thought but he has a really nice technique. That technique might be harder to copy than the notes. Dave
12. Jings its been so long since i've seen that VID and forgot just how good it was. Brilliant. Afraid i can't really help with the question tho as i've never really queried it. It just sounded too difficult to copy i didn't even bother. Dave
13. I would go for the P/J set up too. Gives you best of both worlds in my opinion. I play with a band that does a lot of Blues Rock with the occasional Country rock type songs and the P/J fits it far better than my Jazz. I do have a passion for my Jazz bass tho as it just feels better to play but band think the P/J sounds better. I generally have it set 50/50 pick up split and occasionally change the tone controls very slightly. Dave
14. I'm a fan of most Deep Purple eras but just didn't enjoy that orchestral drivel. Maybe its just the VID quality but not for me. As for the Iron Maiden clip .............not exactly the same comparison and i sense some tongue in cheek with that one New album aint bad tho. Dave
15. To be fair i don't usually go for this kind of thing but on occasion it sounds good. I had no idea who the guitarist was when i first saw it on Facebook. Wasn't highlighted. The one i attached had his name on it. Dave
16. I literally couldn't play for a solid 4hrs without a break even when i was younger i don't think i could have. Have never seen a band play for 4hrs without a break either. I've done 6 hr rehearsals but you're not gigging it solid for those 6 hrs and we always took a 20min break in middle. Is this guy living in the dark ages. Do they still send children up chimneys in Liverpool ? Dave
17. Someone just sent me this and i thought it was pretty good. Yngwie Mamsteen Anyone got any strong opinions whether this works or not. Dave http://youtu.be/TbHc5i4O2tc
18.
My pub covers band mainly play in an established Irish bar and we have a great set which focuses on that style of music but we like to mix it up a bit too so it's not all paddywhack! We cover the Pogues etc.. but also do Dropkick Murphys versions of Irish tunes like Black Velevet Band, some Johnny Cash etc etc. It's great fun as we get lots of locals and tourists who really want to hear this music. We do play the more 'rock' versions rather than the classic Dubliners etc all style but we do mix things up. As we have a great female singer in the band we can mix in some classics like Proud Mary, our versions of Umbrella and Wake Me Up etc. Judging by the look on their faces these also go down well with punters and are often not expected... Baba O Riley Jump Around Groove is in the Heart Shipping up to Boston Sweet Dreams/7 Nation Army - we rip off the Skameleon version which mixes these two tracks in a wonderful ska version of sweet dreams with the riff of 7 NA kicking in. I should add we are a 4 piece guitar/vox, fiddle/vox, bass and drums. Not a horn section in sight! Sweet Dreams/7 Nation Army link below in case you fancy giving it a go! https://youtu.be/EI465DVsKDw
Not usually my kind of music but that SKA dance routine by the brass section made the song for me. A band having fun and being good at what they do. Well done guys, i enjoyed that VID, Dave
19.
You'll soon find out if the punted notice or not. They'll stop coming to your gigs. They'll walk out before your second set. You'll stop getting bookings. Even a band that plays for free won't get rebooked if they're not entertaining the audience.
Yep its the best way to find out how good you are. Hopefully i rehearse enough that i've never actually had any of that happen to me but then again i've not played 1000's of gigs and tend to play gigs that i know the music will be enjoyed. I don't think there's ever a point where you can't improve on something or other. Dave
20. Bit of both for me. Both my Fenders bought new from GAK and both ok. Little bit of tweaking when i got them but i do that with all basses. Also Jaydee from Bass Direct and same there little bit of tweakng and hey ho. Other basses i tried before buying and still had to tweak a little. If its a recognised manufacturer then should be reasonably ok. Do some research on the bass in question before buying to see how the quality control is. Dave
21. Think everyone deserves to have an audition to see if they fit or not. You might be surprised how quickly she can blend in. Maybe workng with non-formal players might give her a chance to play by ear and she might take to it ok On the other hand it might not work. Let her know that if she passes the audition it would need to be a trial period to see how it worked out. Surely first few rehearsals would pick up on that. Dave
22. Yep we have the Alto 15" tops and the 15" subs. Guitarists son works in large gear supplier and highly recommended them and he was right. Good sound and great price even without his discount they are still good value for money. Dave
23.
Why pay $30 when you can get free Metal ? Brilliant.....
24. Thanks Ped. The Browser cache was the one that cleared the issue. Sorry for being a bit slow on this as its not something i've ever had to do. Must be an age thing Thanks again for you patience and help. Dave
25.
Sounds right to me. I'm looking forward to their show even if $30.00 seems a bit steep. Blue
They are quite well known musicians tho and if you're into Jazz style playing then $30 doesn't seem too much. Should be an interesting gig. Wish i could be there. Post some pics or Vids if you go. Dave
