1. IME, by the time you've got Klotz (or Van Damme) cable and Neutriks connectors you've got as good as you're going to get. Anything else is just brand hype and makes b*gger all difference.
2. A 500W amp powering a 400W speaker is quite likely to start melting the coil resin if you turn it up too loud. You can't really use the volume control to judge how much of the available 500W is going to the speaker as the volume 'sweep' may not be linear.
3. I've got a dead easy way of assessing my ability level. I don't bother worrying about it and just let other musicians decide what bracket I fit in.
4.
I've received no phone calls from my bank asking whether I was in a shop in Bangkok attempting to pay for a Maserati
I'd be more likely to get 'Basildon and Mini' than 'Bangkok and Maserati'.
5.
I haven't received one fake eBay or Paypal email since closing my account, I used to get them all the time, i.e., several per week. Could be complete coincidence of course?
That would lead me to suspect that either the fake e-mails weren't fakes, or that someone has access to data that they shouldn't have.
6.
There's also the suggestion that your bank account is more vulnerable to hacking via Paypal than via normal online banking. No idea if it's true but I've seen it suggested several times
I think most people are internet 'savvy' enough not to fall for 'You must be resetting your accountings passwods or your account will be shutted' messages, but I bet a fair few of them would fall for fake Ebay messages because it's not their bank account and isn't instantly perceived to need the same degree of care and attention.
7.
Censoring is alive and well on this forum. Long live freedom of speech.
Where has this thread been censored?
8.
Boy was the bass loud and over fat, can't imagine anyone not noticing. Surely it would have been better for the guy to have run everything flat, that way the individual traits of each bass would have been clearer. Seems to me he just whacked the lower mids and bass right round the dial.....ouch!
Yep, it's certainly not the sound you had in mind. And therein lies the problem. Bassists are notoriously 'picky' about their sound. Many of us upgrade things, tweak things, buy things, buy more things and then tweak those things - all in search of the sound that we have in our heads. Give anyone other than yourself, or someone who's worked with you, control of your sound and, unless you gently and diplomatically 'correct' them, it's going to be the sound that they perceive to be right and the chances are it's not going to be the sound that you had in mind. The other possibility of course is that all the other bands had bought him a friendly drink and he was p*ss*d.
9.
This is great advice - but please do remember that no-one will be listening to the bass anyway.
I know. Being gorgeous can be a real hindrance sometimes...
10.
That was an excellent question that made me go upstairs and grab a bass to see what I actually do!
+1 I don't remember doing any 'specific' exercises to dampen strings when I started playing, it's something that you eventually 'just do' without thinking about it.
11. That's probably because the sound engineer has a set idea of what bass should sound like and has no idea what sound you're actually after. We have our own sound person when we're supplying the PA, but if it's a venue provided one, the first thing we do is buy the sound person a drink and make friends. We've yet to find one that doesn't give us the sound we want once we've done that.
12. These things were all the rage a few years ago but seemed to disappear. I've not encountered one recently, but it seems they've come back into fashion again. Horrid, crude things.
13.
That's fantastic! What track was it?
It was a track called Woodland Spring, think Steeleye Span on amphetamines.
14.
Wow, were you tempted to go up to them and tell them you did the original?
No
15. Hearing a band doing a cover of a song I recorded with my band 20 years ago.
16.
Hey Tom!
Crikey Tom. You really ought to be more careful who you sit next to. That dodgy looking bloke on your left is obviously a pickpocket...
17. I used to use one of these back in the 80's. Great little combo but nothing super special by todays standards. This one has been painted, they originally shipped with orange leatherette (if you look at the pics carefully you can see a little bit of it showing where the paint has been scraped off). The new ones have a lot more features and go for about £350, sensible price, given it's age and assuming it's all working and the driver is intact, certainly less than £100 I'd say.
18. Yeah, that'll just be a little box that runs the two cabs in series.
19. The 'My content' tab hasn't worked very well for some time.
20.
Google Chrome, on an iMac.
Ah, I'm not going to be able to recreate the conditions exactly then. Google Chrome isn't a problem, but I can't emulate the iMac implementation of it.
21. I followed your instructions to the letter but I still can't reproduce it. It was the post by Mike 110 showing six images of his white PJ in a blue lined case. What browser are you using?
22. Well in crude terms, the error message indicates that the web server (i.e. Basschat) is being sent some information in the wrong format. As the site (and the specific thread) works when I post to it (using IE9 and IE10), the problem would appear to be 'elsewhere'. There's a limit to how far 'under the bonnet' I can get to, but my usual suspects would be an over enthusiastically hardened proxy server or a browser issue.
23. Not sure what's doing that as you've been able to post this report. I've just been to that thread and added a reply without any problem at all. Try it again and let me know if you're still having problems.
24. Yes. For the sake of clarity, when we talk about adding standard, off the shelf, factory built speaker cabs we are generally assuming that they being seen as a parallel load by the amp, because they generally are. Exceptions to that assumption would be adding extra speakers to a cabinet, having special cables assembled or rewiring a cabinet to intentionally run cabinets in series.
