I'm gonna be in so much trouble at rehearsal
casapete replied to AdrianP's topic in General Discussion
Jeff is a true innovator, and is one of those players who you can pick out from all of the others. The recently aired documentary on BBC4 'Still on the run' was a brilliant film, highlighting his long and varied career. I wasn't a big fan of his, but watching this changed my perception a lot. Always uncompromising and with a wry sense of humour too, top feller. -

My old function band used to do this, and everyone but me hated it. Two chords, repetitive etc etc. Think our brass section didn't like it as there was too much for them to do in it. 😄 However, have a listen to the original - what sounds like a deceptively simple song has quite a lot going on in it, and whenever we played it the audiences loved it and always got up to dance. I think it's one of those tunes you hear everywhere that you get sick of, but then when you hear the original you realise most people don't play it anything like. Think Mustang Sally etc etc.... -
DeArmond Jet-Star Spel bass for sale. Getting quite rare now, these were made in the 1990's in Indonesia by Guild before Fender took them over. 34 inch bolt on neck design, P-bass style split pickup which sounds punchy, with volume and tone controls. Bass is in excellent condition with fairly recent strings and comes with a used but still serviceable gig bag. Great quality bass for the money, stand out from the crowd! Possible help with delivery / meet up depending on where and when. Prefer straight sale but possibly looking for compact amp head as a spare in trade. NOW SOLD!

First night at a new venue for my acoustic duo in Cottingham (near Hull). We had been resident every Tuesday at a nearby pub for nearly three years, which came to a rather abrupt end with a change in management. However, the landlord at a neighbouring pub 'The King Billy' has given us a months trial to see if we can make the evening happen. Playing in a back room, we had a great evening, with plenty of our regulars 'jumping ship' to the new venue to join us. Fingers crossed, we're hoping to make it every Tuesday from now on.

Lots of good comments and advice here. Only thing I would add is that (certainly from my point of view) it really isn't always possible to send texts when you're going about your daily work / business / life. I drive a fair bit, and only check my phone for tests when I stop for instance. Also many jobs do not make it easy to constantly be monitoring your phone for calls / texts. I check my phone as often as I can to ensure nothing has been missed, and (to my knowledge) nobody has died yet as a result of me not answering immediately 😄

A Happy Tale of Strings & Things / Ernie Ball

Good stuff. Glad to hear that customer service is alive and well , although it’s a bit sad that it isn’t the norm with every purchase / company you experience. Hats off to S&T. -
Just got back from my monthly gig at a local pub, playing country rock stuff. Good crowd in, some having eaten there earlier, plenty of requests and a full dance floor. All in all a good night. However, the landlord had a word with us earlier on, saying he was leaving before Christmas due to not being able to make anywhere a decent living from the pub. Apparently the breweries encourage incoming tenants with discounted rents for maybe a year, after which the charges soar and landlords get scared and quit. This results in a constant changing of people running the establishment, with lack of continuity and building of a long term identity and reputation. In these challenging times, it’s no wonder pubs are closing . We’re just hoping if a new person is found to take on the pub that they will continue to feature live music as part of their business plan. I’m not holding my breath....

Eric Clapton film - BBC 2 Saturday 6th June 2020

I thought the Ronson one was really good too. Plenty of Hull stuff! -
Also maybe worth getting your cab checked, as some official ratings can vary a bit I.e. if it is actually a bit less than 6 ohms you’ll know it’s not a good idea. The bridged thing has confused me sometimes too!

Saw the Feelgoods with both Wilko and then later Gypie Mayo. Different style obviously to Wilko but nevertheless still a great player IMHO.

Someone I knew was working with them, nothing sinister! Just didn't want blow what's left of my rock 'n' roll credentials.

Hard to believe, but the agent of the function band I played with back in the 90's actually suggested cloning another band using the same name as he was turning down so many gigs for us. As mentioned on another thread, we actually split the band in two for one pair of gigs, 4 original and 4 dep players on each gig, and got away with it. Seem to remember there were a good number of bands going out at one point using 'The Drifters' name, so maybe that's what they did?

Think there still may be - 'Bucks Fizz' has one original member, whilst one now calling themselves 'The Fizz contains the other 3 originals. Just don't ask me how I know this please...😅

Fiona Bruce - nah, but slippers...….🤤

Nice one. Us over 50’s (ahem...) can always show these young whippersnappers a thing or two 😄

Yup! Interesting article here - http://www.acousticmagazine.com/interviews/brynn-hiscox-case-history/

Good point - probably best to try with your bass to ensure a snug fit.

Had a couple of them for years, excellent cases which will take most abuse thrown at them. Much prefer a shaped case to rectangular too.

Okay, shame as I have a mate who would have been happy to help you out. Hope you get it sorted though 🙂

Are there parts available for the potential dep?

Who has the other 2% then? 😄

I’m one of those tightwad hoarders who don’t sell anything as technology advances, hence have 100’s of albums on vinyl, along with maybe 3000 singles. My CD collection is probably around the 1000 mark, which I still add to these days due to eBay being so cheap! Use Spotify (free version) for listening to new stuff, then if I like it I’ll source a hard copy. Have maybe 30 or 40 albums on my phone which I use in the car for when there’s nothing much on the radio. Avoid Amazon / downloads unless absolutely necessary, but know that will probably change in the future! File under ‘dinosaur’......😄

Typical audience reaction to a bass solo...

Preferred the udder one, with more cowbell. -
I had a mid 60s sunburst 335 a few years ago and loved it apart from the neck profile, which although wasn’t particularly small was just not big enough for me. Of course I sold it at a time when 335s weren’t particularly in demand too 😕 There was a 339 recently on eBay which I should have pursued by the sound of it - aged cherry and a 50s profile neck which would probably have been ideal for me then. Think the early 339s had the option of the 50s or slimmer 60s necks, with the latter being more popular, and ending up the standard one for later models?

Can you objectively measure technicality?

Just after teatime? You southerners have late snap....
