1. Thanks for the interesting replies so far. From what I've read, maybe entertainer is a better word to describe what I do, as I really get into what I'm doing, and I think I have pretty good timing and can feel the groove ok, and I think I know in my head what's required to make a song work. Still not sure if I'm a musician though!
2. I learnt a few chords on guitar at the age of ten, but never pursued it because I just did not think that I would ever be good enough to become a musician. But around five or six years ago in my mid-fifties, I was the physio of a football club, and the players had put together a make-shift band to play at the end of season presentation night, and they needed a bass player, so I volunteered thinking that they would not be that good, and I wont look too out of place just playing root notes with a few little fills here and there. At the first rehearsal, I was shocked to find that they were all decent musicians, with quite a bit of gigging experience behind them, but I couldn't wriggle out of it as they had no one else they could call on. So for the few weeks leading up to the big night, I set about finding tabs and YouTube video's of the SIX songs we were to play. The crowd seemed to like what we played, and I must have been ok'ish, or at least shown some potential, because they decided to form a proper band, and asked if I would be interested in being the bass player. I have now gigged regularly since then with various bands, but I don't know any theory, I don't know any scales or stuff like that, I don't know what they are talking about when they speak in musical terms etc... and I've never had a lesson in my life, but I can learn a song pretty quickly just by listening to it, and working it out myself, or sometimes if it's a difficult bass line, I might look for a tutorial video to help me. I know how to play the original bass line to around 200 songs, although I do like putting my own take on things, but I still don't believe I can class myself as a musician, because I know nothing about music, other that I can remember where my fingers go. So, my question is this: Can I call myself a musician, or do I just have a good memory?
3.
damn right ! I want to get this amp sold quick time!
Looks like the 36 hour "bump" rule has just been kicked into touch!
4. Thanks again for the replies so far guys/gals. I now have a Gramma Pad which I'm going to try at the next rehearsal, hopefully it will make some difference. As we are a new band, we don't intend starting gigging until around March/April time, so I wont be in a situation to try it live until then. If it is the Streamliner that's causing the problem, what head would work well with the Barefaced Super 12 in your opinions, baring in mind, I am using an American Standard Precision, and we play classic/southern rock, some Dr Feelgood/pub-rock and blues.
5. Lucky you for never having a back, neck or shoulder problem, and I really hope the day never comes when the weight of a bass become a major issue for you. As for nut width, I agree that most of this info should be readily available online.
6. I would love to be able to play bass and harp at the same time. I'm a massive Dr Feelgood fan, and our band do quite a few of their numbers, so if I could nail some of Lee Brilleaux's great harp playing at the same time as playing bass, I would be ecstatic!
7. I'm a bit embarrassed asking this, but I'm finding it hard to work out exactly Bill Wyman is playing on The Spider and the Fly? I know it's a simple bassline to jam along with, but I would love to know exactly what he's playing, so if anyone has an accurate tab or the music to it, I would love to see it. Thanks.
8. Thanks for the replies so far guys/gals. I recorded yesterdays rehearsal, and whilst I had concerns in the room at the time, on playing the recording back, the bass really cut through ok, and sounded quite sweet to me. So it will probably sound fine out front in a live situation.
9. Ok, I have had the Genz Benz Streamliner 9.0, and Barefaced Super twelve for just over a month now, and I know that individually, they are both superb pieces of kit. But together, I am having problems getting the sound I require, it sounds very warm and pleasing, but I just want to tighten things up a bit, and overcome the boomyness. I've read that most other users are very pleased with their tones they get from this combination, so I was wondering if you might share, or give me some insight into what settings you are using on the amp. At the moment I have not gigged with them yet, but have had a few quite loud rehearsals with the rig (maybe it's enclosed room causing the problems?) We play a lot of Dr Feelgood numbers, some classic rock (not metal), southern rock, and some blues Any ideas tips would be most welcome. Thanks. Edit: I am using an American Standard Precision bass through the rig.
10. What would happen if I swapped all three valves with ECC81's? Would it change the sound completey? Please go easy on me, if this is a stupid question.
11. I learnt to play at 55, played my first gig at 56, and now at the the age of 61, I have just formed my third band with four very good musicians, where not so long ago, I would have felt that I had no right to be on the same stage with them. Now I can't get enough of it, but I do worry about my ailing health, nothing life threatening, but I have had two operations on my thumb, which is still painful, and I also have a displaced pelvis, and three shot discs in my lower back, but this is not going to stop me from doing what I missed out on in my younger years. But each to their own, if you really want to do it, you wont need anyone else to urge you on, you would just do it! And if you don't, then fine, you wont miss it if your hearts not in it.

17. I don't play wrong notes, I play alternative notes!
18. We are a new band that hope to start gigging in the new year. We have been together about a month now, maturish, and we are already making some good music, we have around fifteen songs sorted at the moment, and are building our song list up pretty quickly. If you know of any vocalists in the Herts/Bucks/Beds/Middx/Essex area, who might fit the bill, then please send me a message. Many thanks.
19. I used to fill a large car with my rig, now I have my GB Streamliner (in it's bag) on one shoulder, a backpack with bits and pieces on the other shoulder, my American Standard precision in one hand, and my Barefaced Super 12 in the other hand. It's everything I need for any gig that I will ever do, and sounds great!
20. Why not have two buckets? One for those who wants Mustang Sally played, and one for those who don't want it played, and the one that has the most money in by the end of the gig wins. Then it's either played or not played! That way you should get a bidding war and raise even more money.
21. I don't know how much you want to spend, but I've been using a Roland Micro Bass Cube for many years now. It tucks away in a cupboard, or behind an armchair quite easily, which means it is always within reach when I want to use it (which is almost every day). It has a decent array of built-in affects, a drum machine, headphone socket, auxiliary input for your iPod or laptop, can run off batteries, and most importantly, for it's size, it sounds really sweet and is plenty loud enough, and is ideal for pedals and pods etc.. I paid £165 for it new, although I think they are around £195 now, but I would imagine you could probably pick one up second hand for less than £100. If it packed up, I would definitely get another one!
22. Has anyone got the transciption, or an accurate tab for Touch Too Much by AC/DC? Or are there any AC/DC bass books that includes it, as it's not in the two books that I have found so far. It's not to difficult to play, but I'm finding it quite hard to pick out the whole bass line accurately, as some of it just doesn't seem to cut through the mix very well. Thanks in advance!

24. I purchased a set of D'Addario EXL160M medium scale bass strings by mistake, and did not realise until I went to put them on. They are brand new, still in the box, but obviously the plastic bag that contains the strings has been opened. I want to sell them on for £10 posted, to someone who could do with a brand new set of quality strings on the cheap, but I don't know where to list them. There doesn't appear to be a 'for sale' section for strings or accessories. Perhaps we could do with one? Any help would be appreciated.
