The thing is, trends also play a big part in it. It was most noticeable on Talkbass but every few months had its brand, and the year had one too. Like earlier on this millenium, Warwick were the "in" bass at Talkbass and everyone had to have one. The same thing happens here I think, on a smaller scale. Whats popular and being talked about at the moment can really help shift something on the adverts page. You'd think something like a Fender would be very easy to shift, for example, but this year I'm noticing a lot of players are going for very individual basses, picking brands and basses that aren't seen every day and relishing the bass not only for what it is as an instrument but the "kudos" it has for not being something you see all the time. Hence seeing some Marcus Miller basses selling for silly prices!
Ah but this isn't a traditional Fender. I have no problems selling the occasional Japanese P and J bass I get in. Traditional plus quality will always win out over "the hit of 1987!" as ony a small percentage of people will take a risk on a lesser known instrument.
I just want a bass that doesn't give me a bit of back ache. Other wise I'd keep it in a shot, it does everything I need it to do and more. Someone out there must get on with Jazz basses and fancy something different?
Just how heavy is this bass? Maybe you need to make your strap longer or shorter or stand better...

As a tooter of the large bendy saxophone myself, I've always been drawn to John Surman. Proverbs and Songs is a particular favourite but he always manages to weave very atmospheric soundscapes.

Strings are a bit thin for a bass -
I heard a snippet of something on the radio over the weekend. Someone was talking about Jerry Wexler, legendary producer of Aretha Franklin, Dusty in Memphis, and many more big records. The bit that caught my ear referred to this Someone once asked him: "What do you want written on your tombstone, Jerry?’ He said, ‘Two words: More bass.’ ” Good man!
I must be doing something wrong because I don't have any problems with straps coming off and this forum is the first time I'd ever heard of straplocks! I admit I'm not one for jumping about on stage, but even so . . .
and then one day ....
Yeah it's a genuinely interesting Fender man. There'll be a market for it, maybe even some people who'd pay top dollar for it. Fender made some heinous mistakes in their time, stuff like the P-Bass Lyte, but these white '80s spesh models with their hair metal roots were at least used by people so they've got history. I have to be honest though until today I didn't even know this one existed and I've been playing bass since 1989.
Trading for exactly what you want is always tricky. It's much easier to sell what you have and pay money for what you want. Precision Lyte a hideous mistake? Now that's interesting. P lytes are fine if you like that "active" sound, a really fast neck, a very light bass and that 80's look. They still sell for pretty decent money. This one seems to have a very similar body. +1 on return it to standard. people are less likely to buy a bass that is not standard. Unless this is a secret classic I'd suggest £500 is rather ambitious. Someone may prove me wrong, of course.
.... I'm planning on getting my Thumper overwound, but its very close. Unfortunately, Ive still not had a chance to try it with guitar and drums yet, but now everyones finished moving house it shouldnt be long before practices resume.
I'd not make any major decisions before trying it in a band situation.

Oooooooh I hope that's on watch again
I've always lusted after basses but i'm GAS free now i've acquired the perfect precision! I've never really felt the need to go for amps too. I had a 20 watt practice for when I learnt the trade at home in my room, then a 35 watt Orange Crush for early practice with my band, then a Laney 100 watt ancient job for when we started gigging and now i'm on my first 'proper gigging amp' - superfly 500/Peavey 4 ohm 2x10/ Unbrand homebuild 1x15. My evolution has been out of necessity in amplifiers rather then in want. The superfly (when working!) sounds killer into the 2x10 (waiting for the 1x15 to arrive to unlock it's real potential). I think GAS just for basses is as much an psychological thing as they are much more part of you and what it says about you as they are strapped to your chest on stage. GASin' for amps is more a perfectionist thing IMO.
I'd just use the 1x15 as a stand for the 2x10. Read this thread for why http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=84181

Oddly enough he's the spit of the lead vocalist in the funk band I play sax in occasionally - though I think that guy may be having a chemically altered experience http://plentyog.shutterchance.com/blog.php?itemRef=201651
Interesting fred. I like my sound (as do the people I play with ) but I will try this on the gig I am doing tonight with my Neil Sedaka Tribute Band, 'Sweet Sixteen'. It will be interesting to see whether it helps or hinders!
Oh very cool. Some great lines in those tunes.

Anyone Got A Quick Effective Cure For GAS?
OldGit replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
So the sooner you buy that Tokai fretless the sooner you'll form a relationship with it and start getting the best out of it... There is no cure for GAS.
I'm not going to live long enough to play 100 gigs on a fretless..... -
Hmm...I see your point. However, to most customers their teacher is God, and in some cases don't always know what they are on about. For instance, I sold an Epiphone guitar worth over £500 to someone. He showed it to his guitar teacher, who pointed out the minutest fretbuzz, and said the guitar should be returned for a refund. Despite my reassurance that the guitar was fine, the customer wasn't convinced because the teacher had insisted. In the end we had no choice but to refund the money. I later asked the teacher, who was well known to us, to explain his actions. He denied saying anything to his pupil. This points to the OP as the girl and her mother probably being ill-advised.
if advised at all I suspect your customer had a bit of buyer's remorse and pinned it on their tutor
-
There are some people that won't listen to what you tell them. My biggest bugbear with some customers is that they don't believe what you tell them because you are a salesman, and the salesman's priority is to take your money. I have had many that say they will have to come back with their guitar teacher or ask their teacher's advice before buying.
Sadly, Pete, that is how many salesmen are, especially in glossy retail where the staff whiz about from shop to shop and it's assumed to be target driven. I think bringing a guitar teacher in is a fine idea. You should recommend it. You can then get a good reputation with that teacher and they can advise their pupils to seek you out. "oh suits you sir"
On Tuesday, Mrs silddx expressed concern and subsequently berated a colleague who said she wasn't going to vote because she didn't understand what the parties stood for or what their policies meant. Mrs silddx told her colleague it was her responsibility to vote, upon which she said not to worry, she would vote next year And before you say "Ah, but she could have been startlingly insightful and prescient!", she had no idea what a hung parliament was.
Oh neatly morphed into another long running general thread!
