6.
Oh, a good week or so at current rates. Anyway, both are now sold. I've now sold 3 to raise the money for the next incoming... If this one comes off, expect lots of pics in the Gear Porn forum
Fast sales! Mind you I'm not surprised. That Jamerson CIJ P is lovely. So three basses o buy one... This smacks of "birth date" bass shopping
 7.
Si, it's like a disease. Just when i think I'm sorted, something else comes along, and since my strict 3-basses-only rule rapidly became a not-so-strict-7-basses-rule, i figured i needed to thin some out Anyway, the next one that I've got my eye on will definitely, honestly, really be the last one i buy for a while. Possibly. Ahem.
How long is "a while" on planet Tredders then?
 8.
where is the best place to buy MIJ fenders from now?
New ones?
 9. Mark! Goodness you are the bass owning equivalent of Perter Stringfellow. Just hang on to one for a bit and develop a deeper relationship will you? Is that three or four of mine you've had now?
 10.
I'm currently looking onto ordering a bass (new), a fretless jazz (75 re-issue). A tutor of mine reccomended buying it directly from the Ishibashi factory (or something around that name) as depending on the exchange rate you could get it brand new from as little as £350 including delivery. However, I can't track down any info the the factory but google suggests it does actually exist somewhere. Has anyone on here bought new directly from them? How did you go about it? Any help would be brilliant! TK Edit; I have found this (ebay), but it's second hand. Though it will only cost £500ish.
Don't forget to add shipping, Duty, VAT and Parcelforce handling fee. So add £115 for shipping and about £90 for the tax and stuff. Grand total: Nigh on £700 depending on exchange rate. Should be able to pick up a USA one used for around the same dosh. Ishibashi stopped selling new Japanese Fenders direct to UK people about 2 years ago. Allegedly Fender told them to stop or else.

 12.
Maybe you should advertise your services like this guy: Good luck with your new band!
Ho ho.. I like that
 13. Sounds like a result. If you were hanging on of the untold riches and fame brought by that band I suspect you'd have been waiting a long time. Had it got to the gigging stage I suspect something else would have popped up... Let us know when it's safe to apply for the gig (edit - I mean as a wind-up!) We coud all do it and then no one show up.
 14. When I play with my band we sometimes have two guitarists, one plays very complex tones and lines (and keyboards too) and the other has a light touch and delicate sound. When the first one is playing I need a cleaner sound and play fewer notes and chords. Otherwise it all goes mushy. When we play out with the second guy I need a thicker sound so I play more notes, more open strings and chords. I also dial in a little SVT on my Zoom B2.1u and a bit more Vintage Loudspeaker filter on my MB head. That does the trick When I play rock I use my Peavey 300 Combo with a 1x15 Black Widow. Totally different sound that fills lots of space.
 15.
I can't agree with the OP on this one. I suppose it all depends whether you enjoy 'rehearsing' or not. It beats playing on your own along with an iPod, any day. Even though the band might not be the closest of buddies, it is still great to let rip. It's what I joined a band for (playing with others) so I am happy to 'rehearse' anytime for as long as they want, especially as gigs are a bit thin on the ground at the moment. Of course it helps having a rehearsal space that does not have to be paid for, but the OP seemed to be of the opinion that because he has learned his stuff, everyone else should be as perfect as well and not 'waste' his time. Hmmm.. It's a hobby and it's a team game. A hobby that I would gladly do for nothing (even gigging) as we all have day-jobs. You don't see many golfers demanding payment from the golf club for playing on their course - so why should a pub pay us for having a ball? There are thousands of ski-ers out there with expensive kit and horrendous travel costs, but they do it because they get pleasure from it. If I was in a band but baulked at having to actually play together too often, then I would have to seriously question if I had chosen the correct hobby.
That's a different point. We all love to play and let rip, play for the love of it and the adoration of the masses, or just for ourselves and the sheer joy or playing with others in a band, etc., especially when gigs are scarce However that isn't the subject here.
 16.
"... but i dunno... i don't want to get bored with the songs before we've even gigged them!!" I know I've been on this board before recommending people to go and watch Normal Watt-Roy in the Wilko Johnson Band, but I first saw these around 25 years ago (and countless times since) and they are still playing largely the same numbers. How many times can you play 'Roxette' without going mad? But Norman still puts more into his performance than any other bass player I know, he's developed things, changed things about and constantly seeks perfection. He doesn't get tired of the songs, he just gets better, as a result I still want to hear Roxette again! Greg
Yeah but who's going to tell Norm to play things "the same as on the record" or he is wrong?
 17.
Not sure how 135watts of Bassman power equates to SS watts... but I was thinking that poor speaker power of the cabs of that time, anyway. If the cabs have the original speakers, I think you'll have trouble, if they are more modern, then I doubt you will. Even my JBL's are nomimally rated 150watts which is lame by todays standards.
Valve Amp watts are way louder than SS ones, in general ... Good point. Well it's all a bit theoretical right now
 18. I'd do it for free to help out the band but I'd certainly want the new bass player in on the decision making. Unless you plan on leaving town you're very likely to run into these guys again, maybe even in a band you are thinking of joining ...
 19.
I guess you're right about being underpowered by today's standards; but who really ever uses 400 valve watts on stage? I reckon 135 valave watts is equivalent to about 350 solid state watts. Anyway I have never yet found my Bassman 135 to lack enough grunt to splatter brains when required and it always cuts through the mix even with two rock guitarists in my last band. Re JBLs, I think you're right, a lot of Fender cabs did have JBLs at soem point. My 2x15 Bassman cab came unloaded. My first thought was JBLs, I tried them and they weren't that nice in this cab - a bit too harsh and sterile. The top-of-the-line Emminence speakers I went for sounded much much better. They have all the usual JBL clarity and definition, but also the warmth and bottom end of classic 70s bass tones. So, yes ...... cool as f**k and sounds un-f**king-believable and a cheap-as-chips antique in the making!
He might have been referring to my orginal post where the picture is of a Bassman 50 or 70 Yup if this ever happens I'll be looking for the 135 as I'm used to having loads of headroom. Wonder how it woud sound with my brace of Bergantino 1x12s .... or could the little Fender cab be loaded with neo drivers (have to think of the ol' back thesedays...)
 20.
I'm just assuming 2012. I'm still waiting for a receipt for the deposit that he's been promising me for god knows how long, haha.
Don't worry. The second you strap it on and plug it in all this stuff will not matter one jot.
 21.
I had one this morning waiting in my inbox, looks like it was from last night too. He said he would send some pictures tomorrow evening, which I assume is tonight, and that it should be ready for early June, I go Canada this weekend for a few weeks, so hopefully when I'm back, it will be ready.
Did he say which June?
 22. I'd suggest you don't play your own 21st birthday party. All you aunties and relatives and friends will be wantng to talk to you not listen to a band and watch you. So .. dep in a mate and do a feature spot at some point but don't play the whole night yourself. I know 'cos I did it once
 23. As a minimum use wireless for mics and for your bass. Have a big tarp to cover your amp. (cheap from a DIY store) Agree to meet an hour before setting up to review the weather situation and forecast.. The sunny day and the tipping down day are not the problem. It's the "will it, won't it" day that's the risky situation.. The stage should be suitably protected with roof and side sheets. I imagine the event insurers would insist anyway) oh and make sure you agree that you get paid if it's raining, assuming you're getting a fee for this one
 24.
Honky Tonk Women with a female vocalist? Not sure about that ... Do any of the guys sing?
Oh I dunno ... Tina does it justice.. Mind you the bass player forgets to not play in the verses
 25.
Now That's What I Call A Reply! Thanks Oldgit for loads of really good ideas. Chrissie Hynde had been mentioned a few weeks ago but fallen off the radar out of forgetfulness. The other blokes in the band always seem to come up with blokey ideas, whereas me (a bloke too, it has to be said) and the singer (most definitely not a bloke) are always keen to introduce something more feminine. I'll play anything with a good tune. As for Ca Plane Pour Moi .... peut-etre pas, mais merci!
If you have Spotify a lot of the memory jogging and work is done for you. Put in a track or performer you like and they will list their top tunes and also artists like them .. I had to do that for thr more contemporary stuff as I'm a bit out of touch there but the older ones I knew. With your line up you'll need to be creative with your arrangements for some of those but if you extract the essence and find ways to reproduce it - horn lines on guitars are always interesting
