2.
MySpace is where it's at. Free, simple, quick and a format that most venues are used to. Easy.
Absolutely! for that kind of band. Psycocandy what kind of band is it? Myspace is not right for a function band.
 3.
Radiohead's Creep would be a nice easy one to start on.
Love that tune .. the way the guitar comes in a builds the expectation.. excellent!
 4. What do you not like about Myspace?
 5.
Hi OG, I'd be really interested in the books and websites you mention as I'm in the process of learning to do upkeep on mine. Cheers. Jake
PM sent
 6.
This is good guys, im checking the links as I type, well not exactly as I type, but u know what i mean.........& sorry oldgit i hadnt spotted your sticky on this subject.
No worries mate, It's really about making your site work best for marketing your band. Mostly for function bands though it is all transferrable. I don't do techie stuff but there are a few experts on here. All I'd say is to remember that a good website will help your band - whatever your objectives - a crap one will seriously hurt it, seriously. So by all means learn to do a website but start with something less dangerous like a website about your Elvis Wart collection* or some other hobby. Make your mistakes and learn your craft there where you can try things out without causing yoru wedding punters to run away and book someone else... ... Only then make a website for your band. OG * ah too late http://www.ericwagoner.com/weblog/cameraph...ves/001676.html
 7. Hiyah Technically: you can rent enough webspace for band site for about £30-50- quid per year from places like UK2.com or the hundreds of places that advertise in the back of .NET magazine. Renting a URL will cost about £10 per 2 years. Software: it depends on your skill level and PC or Mac, but if you are a beginner there's a pretty steep learning curve to building a website that will support your band and promote it well. And .. the marketing is different for different types of bands: If your band plays originals, is building a following and you have no web design skills then Myspace is your best bet by a very long way. The stock designs are fairly rubbish but you can do a lot with myspace and end up with a good looking site that sells your band well, there's encouraging ways of communication with fans and followers n remind them of your gigs etc... and most people know what myspace/bandname on a poster means ... If you are a function band then you need a pretty professional looking website, just as you need professional and reliable gear, as it promotes the kind of image that draws bookings. So... should spend about 1 or 1.5 times the fee you get for a wedding on it and get a pro-ish looking site with good design, good marketing, good photography and lots of other stuff covered in my band website thread linked from my sig. If you want to learn to do web design yourself then PM me and I'll suggest a few very good books and websites.
 8. here you go then ... not my decor, BTW
 9. Steve Lawson does but that's all instrumental, was that what you mean?
 10. Nearly there then This will be fab. Put me down for a test drive too
 11.
Thanks! Not really interested in trades at this time, no. Need money for wedding.
Need a band mate? I'd trade my part of the fee for a bass
 12.
Volume pedals a good idea but I'm so not used to having one I fear I'd have it turned off at the wrong time, but any suggestions on a good one?
You may want to have a look at a Visual Volume pedal in that case http://www.dv247.com/invt/37001/
Side LED's are a fun idea but I think I'd have to take a bit of stick if I had those on - I can imagine the band saying things like "does it light up where to put your fingers".
Yup I got that for a while. They are great though.
BTW I have to say that basses and guitars are really good value. I play flute and instruments up to about £1500 are considered student grade. Pros will pay tens of thousands. It's the same with violins - and have you seen the cost of double basses? £1000 wouldn't buy you a decent bow.
Yup same with saxes .. I'm constantly amazed how cheap custom basses are compared to saxes.
 13. Thomann do a series of UHF ones with different sets of switchable frequencies. http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_ews_16gt.htm Single channe things can mean you can't use it at some gigs, say if the DJ or house has a mic on the same frequency. Switchable stuff allows at least some get out of trouble options. You should probably read this thread first too. It's about what is legal and what is not... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=wireless Personally, having used various cheaper systems, including the bug, I'd recommend saving up for a better system like the Shure or Sennheiser EW172 ones.
 14. Great idea .. I've got an antediluvian Peavey Combo 300. It's the bass combo equivalent of a rat bike or James Taylor's primer '55 Chevy in Two Lane Black Top. It looks, and smells, like it spent the last 10 years in a damp cellar ... which is precisely where it was until I liberated it. However it works perfectly and sounds just right.
 15. My musical insurance company just sent me some to mark my instruments ...
 16.
Yep, there's a great book by Jeff Noon called Needle In The Groove featuring a bass player... and I wont give too much away. The entire book is formatted like a set of songs lyrics and there's a backstory of the development of pop music in the city the book is set. Highly recommended! There was also a CD of music based on the 'lyrics' of the book out at the same time that I've not heard yet.
Guardian liked it http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2000/may/11/1#a "oh yeah, I play the bass/the bass plays me/the four-stringed, thick-bellied electrified monster, you know, the one that eats all other noises alive and I've gone walking down these four strings most every hour of every day, of every year and every busted heartbeat, just trying to get along to where the last riff kisses the dark/the subsonic groove, we call it dub culture/midnight's vibration/something to reach for some throat, some bottom, some neck and some deep clutch of riverpulse/gets you hot just strapping yourself into the thing/and the more you play, the hotter it gets, the slicker the slide/and all for nothing much because none of the songs you discover, ever come anywhere near to what you hear in your dreams"
 17.
The main character in Iain Bank's Espedair Street, Daniel Weir, is a bass player... Jennifer
Oh yes, I'd forgotten that .. Good book! Some versions of the cover even have a P bass image (which caught my eye and caused me to buy it) but some show that publishers and book designers don't know the difference between a bass and a gu1tar and have given it a Les Paul image..
 18. Any bass related fiction suggestions?
 19.
haha, nothing to see in swansea might as well catch a train trip up to cardiff!
and then what? Nowt much of interest in the shops round here unless Gamlins have one of the very rare "interesting" oldish Fenders in ...
 20.
Nice one! I bet you felt quietly glib!
May not get much carpet for a while though
 21.
A good P bass will get you anywhere.
You just need a good P5
 22.
I work for a dealer in the US so I had no problem getting one. Most colors were in stock at the suppliers warehouse. From what I can find online very few people in the US have tried them (which is why I found this website).
Hi and welcome .. One of our magazines did a good review about 18 months back so a lot of interest was raised here How much to they sell for there?
 23.
I have just turned down two well paying gigs- £200 per gig ( should have been this week and next week ) as my wife was saying I have been playing too much- (3 times per month ) So when she asked for the money for a new carpet I said we couldnt afford it- I said that to earn £400 in my hand I would have to earn about £850 before tax etc so it was a shame I couldnt do these two gigs. A lesson learnt for my wife and you can guess what the answer will be the next time I am asked to Dep!! cheers Bob
Yeah It's balancing job but earning a fair wedge for a gig helps a lot during discussions at home.
