Make sure you have a word with her about that so she doesn't do it again. We had a singer who was like that every gig - the band was close to splitting after two years of that. Fortunately he left, and the guitarist took the singing over again.
Yup, nip that in the bud, Bud... "Hey you were great! however you don't need to relax quite that much"
Well I never got it diagnosed but I was getting symptoms of it. Seems to have almost gone now though, had a couple of months break from gigs and heavy playing. I'm guessing it was due to poor strap length causing me to have bad technique, so I've been trying to find that right height that's comfortable, Which I believe I have. I suppose it could have been some other joint related problem. I've had problems with my knees in the past so maybe I'm susceptible or something.
Wow so young .. You'd better start taking glucousamine as from now ... -
Hi, i dont know if anyone will be able to help with this but i though i would ask. Ive just been looking through bassdirect's website and one bass caught my attention, a Windmill Malin 5. Unfortunately this is the one bass where the picture will not enlarge so does anyone happen to have any more pictures of the bass. This is the page where i saw it: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...tars_Stock.html and here's the small preview: Thank you in advance for any help.
Sean, Mark (poptart) will be along shortly ..
Despite a current roster of about 50 songs that I gig regularly, I always forget every bassline I know when anyone says "play something".
Ha ha yea I know what you mean I've started doing "The Princess Royal" which is a diddly / Morris dance tune ... That's not usually on the "don't play these tunes" list in music shops

Heloooooo Glastonbury!! Well we've waited a while to say that but there we were actually playing Glastonbury fruit and produce Festival!" Fab! Kind of a repeat after Steve the squeezebox and I did a two hander at very short notice last year. Back this time with the whole band, including both Daves, one on guitar and one on guitar/keys/mandy .. they normally take it in turns to gig due to other band commitments so there was way too much guitar going on IMHO Specially when we were joined on stage by local hero guitarist Jon Cousins, ZZ Top lookalike and erstwhle diddly band strummer.. oh and main organiser of the event Anyway That all aside the crowd went wild Lots of enthusiasm and energy going into the dancing and big smiles all round at the show - that always feel good . Lots of "best gig for ages" comments at the end which is nice from such a lively place as Glasto. It's been our summer break and 6 weeks since the last gig so took a while to remember how the foot pedals are currently plugged in and I had an odd hum with harmonic over tones on playing .. arrgh! .. Finally tracked it down the Zoom B2.1u and cured it by pulling the daisy chain power supply out and switching to batteries. I guess it needs a precise voltage and the daisy chains don't always manage that... Batteries went dead later on but that was no problem as I had a spare set to hand, and a gap in the music to fit them .. I played my new old 1980's "Japanese market only" '62 RI Jazz and realised Jazzes just don't do what a P can do in our mix .. Significantly different to the Shuker P in terms of clarity, it was also honking away with lots of mids .. I've never really liked Jazzes and that just cemented my feelings .. So that will be moving on at some point. Nice bass, it just doesn't fit me ... Oh and there was a sound limiter hiding behind the side curtain of the stage. Set oddly, it seemed to be mids sensitive. Anyway we "accidentally" plugged in to a socket a long way away in the kitchen just in case ... At the end we found out that, had the other venue manager been on duty, doing that would have got us a life ban (!) but the guy on last night was Ok about it. Only saw two red lights all night anyway on the sound meter so we weren't that loud ... Anyway, no discernible Eavisis in the room so I doubt that the gig will get us main stage at Glasto next year but who knows Maybe we'll get asked back for the Fruit and Produce show again The auction of prize winning fruit and produce was fun too.. we managed to buy loads Oh and note to self .. next year take vegan jelly babies to hand out and stop the squeezebox player asking for a bacon sandwich instead of the vegan soup ...
If you don't have a CD..... Have a nicely printed set list / information sheet. The venue wants to know what sort of stuff you'll play, how horrible you look, and if you'll fit. Don't forget contact details that actually work. Have business cards too. Go in looking like you mean it. Try and be a bit presentable :-) As to speak to the person who books bands. If they're not there, and they never are, get their name (write it down), when they are in and leave an information sheet. However, always always always go back and speak to the right person. Ask for a gig - just ask, "we are a great band, you'll like us, and we'd go down great in your pub. Can we have a gig please?". When they say they are fully booked ask if you can leave your details in case of cancellations. If all that fails, go back in 3 months and try again. Around here, the good pubs are booked up a year in advance and it's hard to get on the circuit. Being available for cancellations can make the difference. This all assumes that you are not crap when you do get to play of course Couple more thoughts.... don't go at stupid busy times or when other bands are playing. Again, if anything like around here, avoid big cities. Central Glasgow, for example, is just full of places that basically want you to pay them to play (sell tickets to your mates). The choice venues are all in the "burbs".
+1 on all that. if you can promise to bring 50 people (and then actually do it) you will get gigs and re-books. Be careful with your BS ... Don't pretend you have a following and then bring no one to your first gig. If you do that the venue booker (and his booker mates on his emailing list in the local booker network) will not trust you again. Just say "we can bring 50 people" and then bring 50 people. Try for gigs in places that have bands like yours. Go and watch the good ones to see how the venue works and how the band does their gigs. Any band that fills a venue is worth watching as they will be the sort of band the venue is looking for not just the tunes they play.. If you are starting out and don't have 3x45 mins sets plus extras, offer to do support slots at prestigious venues. If you get one you'll only need 45 mins and then you can truthfully say "we played [name of venue]" and it will be true, plus support gigs can generate a following (and you need that for good venues) Set your payment expectations realistically. Some gigs will pay a flat fee (find out from other bands how much that is - just ask them, before you go for your meeting) Some will pay an amount based on beer takings that night - up to you if you trust the pub to do that fairly but it has been known for a full pub to say "we didn't make much, here's £20 for the whole band) that's up to you. Some will pay you if you sell tickets only or give you 100 tickets to sell where you keep £2 per ticket sold or whatever. That's not "pay to play" by the way, it's just the venue sharing the responsibility for drawing a crowd with you. Someone has to cover the costs of putting your band on. Get it right and you can make a decent amount of money on that basis. If you think they should provide you with an audience and a fee with you doing nowt in the way of marketing and following building, then you may be disappointed and you should go for the flat fee pubs. Plenty of previous discussions on the subject of "pay to play" on here.
A decent myspace (done properly not cluttered up with pics, slideshows, top 8000 friends etc) - you can have everything on one page, music plays while they read your bio, dead easy to navigate, dead easy for people to get in contact, massive online network with other bands/fans etc, and it's FREE! Doesn't seem too crap to me
Protium, Sorry, you misread my note. The web advice in the book I'm recommending is crap - it says "don't list your gigs on your website, if you feel you must have one, as rival bands will get ideas for places to play" and crap like that. I'm a total, and very vocal, advocate of both websites and Myspace .. Check the link from my sig

Get a copy of this absolutely excellent book/ebook on how to do it, and then how to get booked back. It will be the best £15 you've ever spent on anything to do with your playing, no question. http://www.gig-getter.co.uk/indextest.htm Don't be put off by the marketing. Oh and the Web advice is a bit crap but the "personal approach" to pubs bit is right on the money.
How man, that's mint! I'll try and find a pic of my old 300, sold broken to a mate for 50 quid, mended itself and hasn't gone wrong once being gigged every week for the last year. The 50 quid paid for 2 chiropractor sessions to undo some of the damage it did though. One handle on the top - great idea Peavey!
Ha ha yeah I had one when I young (quite possibly the same one I have now but with a 30 year gap) and I love grunt and the sound of that big BW 15 for bad attitude rock in scary pubs ... my dainty Markbass and Bergs are way too effeminate for those gigs Mine has two FO big proper handles inset into the sides .. not level or in the right place for balance, and they were fitted upside down when I got it but a lot easier to shift .. oh and it's on wheels too ..
Thanks for the insight. Already thought of Dearnley Jase (by the way... I need them new rock boots, I'm playing with a 6ft 4 guitarist and I stand at 5ft 7 on a good day ) - lovely bloke but he's pricey. Went down his workshop a few years ago to aquire some hardware for a guitar project I was doing... had a stunning Zemaitis Les Paul shaped bass - metal top to boot. That was a beaut but 2 Grand - ouch! Really I'd be looking at a budget of around £600 to be honest.
Hummm That's a bit of a challenge I reckon. Isn't there a bass that's almost the right shape that could be bored and painted (and maybe have a headstock graft) so it looks about right ? You may manage buying and modding for that budget but I doubt anyone will be able to do a complete from scratch bass for that ... You can get paddle headed necks from WD so you can cut your own shape and then get a luthier to make the body and The necks are £200 though ...
