Passive tone systems, Villex, Stellartone, Varitone etc
OldGit replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
I built my own "varitone" years ago and won't bother again or with any of the commercially available items. I don't see much point in them when using a good back-line setup or when DI-ing into a panel or mixer. If you like doodling at home and playing around with different sounds then maybe they have some merit. I think the current trend seems to be moving away from items like these towards a good solid bass sound combined with a few pedals and a good amp. We all know most of the sound and dynamics comes from your own fingers anyway. I liken it to audio amps with all the bells and whistles we saw on them a few years ago...gimmicks and expensive ones at that. My audio amp has one volume control and a set of good castle speakers and whatever I play through it I never think " that needs more bass" or "that needs more treble" its a pity we can't get bass amps the same. I have always found too much tone control on a bass or an amp is there to correct an underlying weakness in the sound. Less is more.....now who said that ?
A P bass player like me I expect, though I do have a bunch of foot cotrolled stuff that changes the sound. But, the other side is the mass of knobs and controls and subtle options you get on an active bass, and the many players who replied "yes, lots" to the "who uses their tone controls?" thread. Your view is valid if you have your own signature sound but if you play in a covers band and have to make a sound that's close to each orginal rekkerd, you need a few more otions than high filter off/high filter on that your P bass gives you .. -
Quite right, but you will never persuade the non believers . Sorry did I say £120 to build something better than those crates with trendy names, I meant £100 ish BMF T24 plans £10ish wood 1/2 inch £30 Beta 10 £42.99 Speaker terminals £2.99 Blackboard paint £5.99 Glue £6.98 Corners £3.99 Screws £2.89 2.5mm cable £1.99
Not knocking BFM Omni cabs as I haven't tried one but ... Of course what you pay for with a Bergantino (for example as I have a pair) is for someone else to design, develop, market and make them, then ship them several times and to make enough money to keep doing that. The name is fairly irrelevant but the portability and superb sound (to my ears) is well worth the cost... oh and the used value is also high. Personally I'd rather spend my valuable time out of the shed and out gigging to pay for GAS.
your other option would be the good old volume knob on your bass, although this would limit you to finding a sweet spot and having the ability mid gig to bump up your signal whilst playing, though i'm sure with a bit of playing you could find an output level that would give you a certain amount of felxability in that department. but like alex has said in this situation there SHOULD be enough headroom already to deal with the lack of input gain variability.
No input level control? It just seems wrong with a valve in the system. How do you get the right amount of "valve sound" in the mix without a control on the head's preamp? Use my bass volume control? Are you joking? How do I get it to exactly the right place in the middle of a gig on the bass volume knob if the right place happens to be 77% of full on? I don't see how this can work (for me). However that's Very Big bang for the bucks so I guess you could buy a Visual Volume pedal or other floor based signal limiter with the change. And, "Worst Feature Ever": I'd have to stick a correctly spelled sticker over the "Brite" switch label..
Wife + 2 kids....not gonna happen anytime soon
There is nothing as good for your development as playing with other musicians. Loads of people are in the same situation, including band members. You just ("just" ha ha) need a family agreement, and a band that only plays now and then ... Or, if you think that's insermountable, advertise for a guitarist to jam with.

** Gone ** 4U Thomann Rack bag. Tatty but functional
OldGit replied to OldGit's topic in Completed Items
I'm in Bristol and could really really use this! Off on tour tomorrow but very interested if you happen to be out my way any time soon.
PM'd -
Moved to an ABS 3U rack so this is up for grabs. Tatty but functional. Rear flap zip thing is missing its tab but works OK. Front and back fold around the side (rather than over the top like some) and it has a pocket and straps. New one looks like this http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_rackbag_4he.htm No money wanted but pick up from Cardiff, or postage, plus a few quid to the charity I support would be appreciated: http://www.kambia.org.uk/ Postage would be about a tenner. Alternative to posting would be a meet at one of the upcoming venues.. (Kington Langley near 'Nam in Wilts this Thursday, 18th Sept, Glastonbury this Saturday, 20th Sept, Castle Coombe on the 26th Sept or routes to and from) I also get to Bristol, Stanstead and SE London on a fairly regular basis.
I like the sound of it. I just need to check with the band members to see if there are any ethical objections from the band members (eg. any rabid Tottenham or Chelsea fans among them).
Let us know how it goes ...

There's various passive tone "drop in" mods for Jazz and Precision basses. What do you think of them? Any experiences?
Weird posh portaloos with fully flushing toilets, carpet and classical music piped in, and a fish'n'chip van. Hooray!
Wow! Fish and chips served on the potty .. Posh people reallly know how to live, eh? We played one of those gigs a few years back. Posh portatloos with paintings, had to go outside for the burger van an air rifle stall, though ... . At 11pm they lauched £6,000 worth of fireworks off a lorry, synced to comptuerised music, in the lower paddock .. We should have charged more ...
I agree with you both and I don't think that's a self-contradictory position for me to take. What do they get out of it? Free music. What do you get out of it? Free publicity. Win-win, unlike the actual football matches.
Hi Syed, I thought this would be really good for your funky London based band ...
Sorry to sound cynical but it just seems like they're after some music for free.
Yeah, that is cynical ... "Music contributors will not be paid but will recieve full accreditation on the matchday show. This is not a competition, rather an opportunity to broadcast your music to a wide audience." So a fullish stadium full of people getting to hear your music, and they know who it is from the matchday show (whatever that is) and you don't have to pay anything? Sounds like a damn fine deal to me, specially if you are in London or the town of the team they are playing.
I have access to a large piece of cherry which could be used for a body for a bass... before I go to the trouble of having it planked and dried, has anybody had a bass body done with Cherry before now and did it work? This cherry tree (which I helped take down last weekend) is really large in cross section and the largest chunk is over two foot in diameter and 4 foot long, dead straight with no branches over that part either. We already have a couple of local cabinet makers interested in it, but it would be nice to know if it would make a good body for a bass first.
TB Discusson on the subject here Talk bass on cherry wood bass bodies
ok, just picked up on this thread a bit late. There is a type of grease you can get called Kilopoise. It comes in various grades of "stiffness" or viscosity, if you like. In its thinner form it is used to make rotating parts feel really smooth (think of SLR camera lenses) and take up play in parts where the tolerances are quite slack. A small amount applied to your shaft will make it considerably stiffer. It doesn't dry out either. It is made by Rocol. Hope this helps. Cheers, MBA
Thanks for that I'll give the low tech felt a go first May steal a cymball felt washer thing from my drummer when he's not looking
sure, that would be cheaper than the petrol to get there, however I wouldnt get to check I like playing it, or that the neck suits me, that it has nice grain, or whether its a two or three piece body (which a poster said was important to the tone on another jazz bass thread) Apols for the Cheap S post - I was having a spazzy moment and hit Enter too soon.
Ah yesss I know what you mean.. and if you go to reidys with the readies you may be able to negotiate for some strings and things in the deal

Can we have two categories, basses and amplification?
