1. I'd start with a service and maybe a new set of valves ...
 2.
yeah it was 700 quid brand new... the one in the shop was brand new...
errrrrrrrrr what model's that then?
 3.
Those 705's really do look sweet - though if you're unsure about how you'd get on with a 5 string, it would be worth trying a few out before you splash out around £500 on a 705 (I think it's in that price range). Particularly if you're used to a P Bass, since Ibanez necks feel very different to Fenders. I prefer them, but they're not to everyone's tastes.
The Squire P and PJ 5's are really outstanding for the money, especially used As with any "not sure" GAS attack, buy used, sell if you don't like it and you may not loose any money (specially if you buy now during the depression and sell when things pick up again ... As a Precision player, when I got my P5 I put my Fender P4 away in its case for about 6 months and just played the 5. It was the only way I could convert. Happy on 4 or 5 now I can even play a 6 I'd recommend trying these if you fancy something close to a P bass in feel .. Yamaha BB405 http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/yamaha-bb-405/70761 and the Musicman Sub 5 http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=4082 Incidentally my Shuker P5 has the neck profile of the Ibanez BTB 405 .. flat and wide, just like a 62 p bass, well with a few extra mm for the extra string http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/Bass_Guitars/...itars/p101.aspx

 6.
Sorry, forgot there were still people using IE7. It is of course Ctrl + F5 then and also for FF (Ctrl + R as well). Its been a while since i used it. Sorry for the confusion.
No Worries I only use IE when I have to of course so do about 60% of webusers Firefox is doing well, though, at 43% (W3Schools stats for August 2008) As a keyboard stroke person though I like to know any specials that come along. Use Ctrl+r all the time but I didn't think it reloaded without looking in the cache .. but then I ain't techie ... it's my age you know ...
 7.
You can also hold down Shift and hit F5 in your web browser. This forces your browser to go and get a fresh copy of the page rather than reading it from the HDD.
Not in my web browser .. (IE7)

Why do these people keep letting me down?
They played some Gazzer on the radio station I was listening to in Spain on hols .. they also "educated" my 10 yeard son a little by playing the non radio edit of a few things like Alanis Morrisette's I Wanna Know .. hummmm I think that did more damage to him that Rock and Roll part 2 ... Meanwhile Ric-o-sound ... er? what for?
 10.
Nobody has slagged off the Roland Vbass yet, probably because nobody has ever used one? I am happy to report that the rest of my gear has been slagged off (Line 6 and Vigier) which is funny - ha ha funny rather than odd funny. It is amazing how peoples tastes vary. Oldgit - love that table, where did you find it? 11.
Once saw a left handed bassist who played a right handed bass, flipped over left handed, but strung normally (IE not flipped to compensate). No idea why, his technique was as a result very bizarre. Quite a good player though.
Bay City Rollers guy played like that .. I guess they shared basses around his house and only had a right handed one ...... I used to share a house with leftie and both p basses would be on stands plugged in in the lounge/music room. We used to swap over now and then so I've had a go that way round .. Not too hard for basic blues

 14. Been round this one before One of the guys in my band and several I've played with before were sinister characters playing right handed guitars strung in a trad stylee. It's just a convention that the picking hand is your writing hand .. no other reason for it.
Why have distortion pedals for bass? If I want filth, I overdrive my amp's pre-gain.
A pedal allows you to do that and switch it in and out ... Can't be doing with all that fiddling about with gain settings half way through a verse and then try to get it back to where it was for the chorus and then have different settings for the middle 8 ...
 18.
Actually, why ARE straps so expensve...?
They aren't. Many a good strap is less than the cost of a few pints of beer or a set of strings and last way longer than either ... Oh and the right strap can transform how your bass feels and hangs and thus how well you perform and play ....

 23.
I think this thread is great. Reminds us all that we have different tastes, and hopefully gives a bit of perspective for the 'what's the best...' converstions we have elsewhere. So here's my utterly opinionated list, to be read very much with a 'dangerboy is trying to get a certain sound and feel, and this gear just can't do it' slant. I understand other folks will get exactly what they want from these things, but they'll never work for me... All active basses. Honestly. The lot of them. I just don't see the point. I increasingly can't stand humbuckers, either. Warwicks, Ibanezes, etc. Ashdown Trace Marshall Hartke The thumb of the right hand. Does that count as a bass-related product? Boutique pedals that are just clones of basic BOSS models or Tubescreamers. All Line6 gear except the DL4 and Echo Park The BOSS ODB-3 Any digitally-modelled distortion Flangers Non bass-related: Girlfriends/boyfriends in bands who don't do much and stick out like sore thumbs Cymbals (unrealistic, I know) Delay on vocals Bands that are less than 25% bass player, except where said band has over 8 members Hats on-stage Metal Strats Nearly all guitar music made before 1976
Well I was with you up to the Hats comment Slap solos
 24.
Effects pedals, why spend a fortune on a bass and amp, then plug an effects pedal in to the chain to make it sound like a flatulant blue whale.
Oh Oh! That's exactly the sound I'm after .. Which effect shoudl I get?
 25. The small print may say that they will not honour the warranty if you mess with the bass but that's not really the situation. Under the sale of goods act things you buy have to be fit for the purpose they are sold for and for a "reasonable time" thus if your bass' pre-amp stops working a day after the warranty runs out they cannot refuse to fix it as they are legally required to do so. If they do then quote the act. It's not a fixed term such as "a washing machine should last for 10 years, an Iron for 7, a bass for 50" If it came to court it would be whatthe court decided was "reasonable" Of course, should you happen to ask the salesman how long a bass should last he'll tell you they will last for ever if you change the battery and strings regularly and have it serviced annually .... Oh and lets make it clear here. It's the shop you have the contract with, not the manufacturer so the shop can't duck out of it that way either .. or demand shipping payment to send it back ... There's a fine government website on the sale of good act that lays out your rights in nice, printable, pages .... Just right for showing to shop people. Sale of Goods Overview page So, in all, mess with the pups and they can refuse to fix them or anthing they may touch however, that does not include a fingerboard detatching itself or the finish peeling off etc...
