Triggering loops and samples while playing live?
Myke replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
At the moment we have complete key tracks on Reaper, which needs a click track and relays on keeping very tight. Ambleton may be easier what do you think is the best way tpo trigger them. The drummer with a pad maybe or some pedal. Note: if I sound out of my depth thats because I am I normally leave this stuff to others in the band but wondered I could come up with some suggestions.
When I used it (was like an hour) I used a usb keyboard and the mac keyboard (separately) but I've seen people use pads to awesome effect and I'm sure the same could be used with pedals. I think you'd be best to have a go with a free trial and see if it'll be good for your needs and whether it seems viable or not. You can get a free trial online. Damn expensive to buy though! -
Triggering loops and samples while playing live?

Have you tried using Ableton Live? I've never used it properly but you can like link a sample/loop to a key or a pedal or whatever interface your using and trigger it like that. Not sure on price though -
I really enjoy divergent study! Often when I'm struggling to solo over a set of changes, I'll play them into a loop pedal and then just try and solo/think my way through them. I'll also try to sing a nice little melody or two, and play them back. It's all about building my mind's ear, and strengthening the relationship between it and my instrumental technique.
Is that Divergent or Convergent?

According to this I spend 3/4 of the time in Divergent mode where I spend hours just noodling, soloing, coming up with grooves but with no fixed goal in mind. The last 1/4 is where I have a focus in mind and work towards that. Like sight reading, ear training, learning songs for sets etc. But recently I have been learning how to double thumb and learning how to use some more percussive left hand stuff but I do this along with the noodling etc. but I don't any fixed goal, just get better at it, so what does that count as?
Crikey! Looks like a nice bit of kit for the money. Will be following this. I've always wanted to do one of these...
Me too, I have my eye on that Jazz kit!
I find this viewpoint really, really bizarre. Hip hop is not some niche genre only marketed towards 'black America'. It may have started out as such in the 70s, but by the mid-late 90's, it was the largest-selling genre, certainly in the States, and possibly the world. It's influence has continued to pervade most popular music since. But this song is sh*t.
Specially since Eminem
It is indeed the late RJD, I believe he is credited with being the first to use/throw/create the horn symbol with those fingers, taken with a pinch of salt as we've collectively had fingers for many years but him being the first in rock to do that seems kind of reasonable
I read a interview with him somewhere and he said he got it from his Nan and just began using and it went from there. Congratulations I myself don't have Twitter but if I ever get it I'll follow -
Does he honestly like that song..? I quite enjoy rap and hip hop and stuff but that was just like songs mashed together with terrible rapping over the top.. and what was with him riding that motorbike, seriously.. He needs to listen and watch this stuff before he puts it out. This was a fail.
Ha,no no.. The bass gets as much attention (from me at least) as everything else because if it doesn't fit, the mix is wrecked. Sometimes making the Bass and the Kick drum sit together is tricky but the sonic integrity of the entire mix is pinned on that combination. EQ is applied where needed usually to accentuate the strength or attenuate the weakness of a given sound. Normally a couple of dB at the appropriate frequency (ies) sorts issues. Hi-pass filter again depends on the situation as does EQ generally. Sometimes it's spot on straight out of the tin Compression is again only applied if needed. More percussive sounds tend require a little more 'squashing' with reduced thresholds and attack times with higher ratios. Older-school sounds sometimes just need a little 'tightening' using slower attack times, a softer knee and lower ratios. Sometimes it's not needed at all with enough dynamic range to look after itself. I don't normally need to gate the bass as if it's excessively noisy or unstable for any reason, there's usually a problem elseswhere such as a groundloop or the DI out has a poor Signal / Noise ratio. It's all about making it fit together and I find the great bands I deal with get that. And the not so good? Well they simply don't! Every good sound engineer should consider all of these things (and more) when mixing the bass in any group as most are greater than the sum of their parts, a synergy so to speak. The bass player is nearly always the 'binding agent and multiplier' IMO.
Seems like you know your sh*t! I've only had the feeling I was being properly mixed maybe twice in all the gigs I've done but maybe that's because it was the only time I needed it!
Because after listening to the kick drum and assessing the guitar noise, a decent engineer should have an idea where the bass soonically fits into that mix. As a bass playing sound engineer, I'm always on the bassists side a long as he's behaving of course..
Ah! I thought they just kind of didn't bother with much EQ, comp, gates etc... Makes sense now!
In contrast a modern bass cab is ported, and has a tweeter, so getting the mic position bang on to deliver all that the cab produces is really difficult when close micing ( amust on stage due to the spill). Which is why a mic on a bass cab should concentrate on the cone for the mid range, and a DI should be used for the bottom end, because getting a mic to capture the port output at a decent level and the midrange at the same time is pretty tricky. That just leaves getting the DI and mic in phase, but any engineer worth his salt should know exactly how to do that.....
This all takes time and I think in the end people just go with the DI because it's much simpler. Plug in, 'Play a bit of bass mate' (10 seconds later) 'Alright, thanks man, all done' That's the typical sound check I have.. But I agree with what BigRedX said but I just go with the flow for everything
-
I think it's just a less hassle to just plug in a DI
I haven't progressed at all since my last posting. I use the bass as-is with the cardboard pickguard held in place by friction. At present I'm so busy that I'm unlikely to do anything more with this bass until December. What spare time I have I'm spending on my DIY looper project. I'd need to use equipment at work for the pickguard, and at the moment when I get to work I'm submerged in work. But, it will happen sometime.
Ah okay, please keep us informed when you do
-
How're you getting on with this? I picked up the same bass but in black today, did a quick shim which made it much, much easier to play. I must admit I prefer the sound acoustically more than I do through my amp but I'm still learning what I can get out of it. Not a bad bass for £65

Can I have it please?
Er, just found that I still have this book. Anyone want it?

I've often wondered why all guitar makers don't use XLRs. Who would consider an unbalanced mic for serious band use? Yet we're all happy to connect yards of unbalanced cables to our instruments and then some of us worry about noise and cavity-screening as a result. I'm sure the answer lies in history but I'm a bit surprised we haven't snapped out of it by now. One day perhaps.
But it's also on the side of amp makers too. A lot of amps don't have the Balance bit in them so even if the guitar was balanced and so was the cable the amp still wouldn't be. Unless like the OP you're using a DI. Anyway OT so my bad!
