1. By super techy shreddy bass players. Do you mean in a band environment or like a solo thing?
2. Ooh nice specs
3.
Shame! The Precision often gets overlooked when it comes to 5-string and fretless basses - maybe it is considered too meat-and-potatoes compared to the Jazz?
I've never met anybody with a 5 string Precision. I've also never thought of them as a 5 string bass. Weird.
4.
Yes - I think you're right. Something about the bass tone on those awful recordings has prompted her to make the comment. I'd like to know why she thinks there's a need for "more of a groove thing" - it suggests that she feels I'm not keeping time or hitting the groove or something. I can ignore the reverb suggestion, but there's something bothering her.
Best plan is to ask
5. She probably thinks that Reverb will achieve what she wants your bass to sound like but really it's something else but she doesn't realise it.
6. Not learning scales and stuff is all well and good if you are in a tribute band or a covers band etc but if you jump on stage to sit in at a jazz gig or dep for a band at short notice and have to learn 20 songs in a week, good ears alone isn't going to get you through that. I think it all depends on what type of musician you want to be.
7.
Something odd going on I just voted making it 292???? I force a page refresh it says 291 I can then vote again to make it 292, refresh the page and it's 291?
Did that to me the other day. I think it was because I had already voted.
8. The easiest way of doing this is to set up both things recording at the same time. Clap loudly so when you go to edit it together you can aline the two and it should be pretty much exactly the same. Doing both separately would increase the difficulty of it. I have no experience with the boss though so can't help you there
9.
I used to have a P/J with just a toggle switch. It sounded great but I would have much preferred a blend knob for more control over the blend. Recently I bought a master volume, blend, master tone loom from Ki0gon (John) on basschat, for my Jazz. I much prefer it to VVT as it's much easier to adjust live. Ki0gon's looms have screw terminals to attach the wires from your pickups, are pre soldered and take 10 mins to install.
Yeah I have one of his P bass looms, it's good Actually he's just PM'd me so I'm thinking that's where I'm heading
10. Ah I thank you!
11. How do people do it then? Sorry, I suck with electronics
12. Damn! If only it was as simple as I thought. These pickups are just going to be odd ones. So I guess it'll have to be VVT
13.
As I have said before on Basschat (and someone accused me of being elitist,) , people who don't know any theory are using exactly the same rules of music as those who do, whether they realise it or not .
I don't understand how people could disagree with this. What ever you play would be explained by theory if you thought hard enough.
14. Hello, I'm going to put a J pickup in a P bass so I can get a PJ (obviously ) but the way I would like the controls is with a Volume, Tone and Blend. The blend would be front - P pickup Middle - Both, Back - J. Is there anyway of doing this? Oh and it's a passive bass. Cheers Mike
15.
Surely right and wrong note choices is largely subjective and to a certain extent dependant upon the genre of music you are playing. Certainly the intervals and harmonies I'm using with my current band wouldn't have sounded right with the band I was in 10 years ago.
This is true but surely it's your choice of note not the right and wrongness of the note that will change.
16.
(is she dead? I'm referring to her in the past tense and sounds natural)
Nope
17.
There are 1000's of players the same I'm sure. .But are they guitarists REALLY?
I completely agree with you but I don't like to say so because I'm sure there are players like that on this forum who consider themselves bassists and I don't like to argue..
18. I think this just shows the different types of bassist out there. 1. You get the ones who want to play songs and not learn all that rubbishy theory stuff 2. You get the ones who want to understand how to play bass so learn the theory and use it how they will. 3. You get the ones who want to play songs and then realise all that other theory stuff can actually be damn useful! I'm sure there are other types as well so they can be added on Also this goes any type of musician not just bassists..
19. I never noticed that before..
20. Actually, I just had a really good practice with a main focus in mind. I was learning stuff from the Latin Bass Book and working to get one section done. I feel so much chuffed now, more so than the random playing that I've been doing recently. I must enjoy learning
21.
In some respects, surely the question of if this matters or not will depend on what stage of learning you're at won't it? I'm still learning the FB, Modes and scales. So I need lots of Convergent study. If you're way past the Modes and Scales stage and onto learning solos and constructing bass lines, maybe the Divergent/Convergent lines get less defined?
This is very true, I hadn't thought of it like that
22. Damn they're some nice looking knobs!
