1. What make/model of speakers do Marshall use in that cab?
  2.
Thanks again. Growly is good -- so I'll go for stainless. Cheers Mark
Be careful because stainless is also bright of course. I've found that the combination of Lo-Rider Stainess, J-Retro, maple neck and Aero pick-ups seems to work rather well. Like all things it's a matter of experimentation until you find a combination that works for you. Problem with the cost of bass strings is that it tends to get a bit expensive.
  3.
Thanks, obbm. I take it you like them, then? Cheers Mark
It was very late when I wrote that. The DJ5 has Stainless Lo-Riders whereas the DJ4 has Nickels. I'm really happy with the tension on both but find the Stainless are a bit growlier so I will put Stainless on the DJ4 as well next change.
  4. Mark, I have LoRiders on my Lakland DJ5 and they are magic however I also have Lo-Riders on my DJ4 and they are also magic. Hmmm.
  5.
.....and it may be too late by the time I'm in my 60's.
Believe me it won't.
  6. I get out and gig, between 2 and 6 times a month. I couldn't live without them. There is so much you learn playing in a band in front of a live audience that you cannot possibly get from playing alone at home, with friends or in a recording studio. It not a case of whether you are a better or worse musician, it's just a broadening of the experience. Timing, anticipation, you have to watch, listen, be prepared for the unexpected and then work out how to deal with it. I for one hate the pressures of a recording studio, give me a live gig any day.
  7.
+1001 I really want to pick one of those up as a back-up, they should go cheap as chips nowadays but they aren't that common.
So how much are you prepared to offer for one of these rare beasts?

  9.
I was just starting to think that at last Epifani are being used by more and more people. then i realised its just the same two cabs being sold and brought on Bass Chat ;-)
I've still got mine after almost 3 years. Still sounds great but I never get to use it as a friend keeps borrowing it.
  10. Can anyone recommmend or not any particular wireless hardware. There seem to be a lot of systems out there now and trying to decide which one to go for could be a bit of a minefield.

  15.
Can anyone give me any advice on how to tell the age of a stingray. The wife is going to buy me a new bass, so we went stingray shopin today. I was just wondering if anyone has any info on serial numbers etc. Cheers M
You'll get all you want to know here Good hunting.
That's fantastic - thanks for posting that Dave and for thinking of the idea in the first place.. Nice item of post to return home to after a holiday instead of the usual bills etc that lie waiting in anger on the doormat. Hope you had a good one... Nik
If only. I was working, the only serious bit I do a year, at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam. Lots of lovely kit, stunning pictures and many pointers to the future. I also found out a bit more about the future of wireless mic channel 69. I'll post on that later. I had the most diabolical journey home yesterday but that's another story. If anyone needs a cowboy outfit for their son for Xmas I recommend they buy Flybe.

A final postscript. I 've just got back from 10 days abroad and found this letter waiting for me. Well done everyone.
  18. After these comments I'd be really interested to run a comparison between the UL212 and my UL112/T112NYC set-up. I was in a situation recently where I played with really loud drummer on a dep gig. The drummer from my main band was sitting at the back of the pub and at break time I asked him what he thought. First comment was that drummer was far too loud, then he surprised me by saying that the bass was too loud so it must have been cutting through really well. I did a side-by-side with my two cabs against Gareth(Walbassist)'s former T212 last year and they sounded similar although the T212 was somewhat deeper. I suspect that the additional volume of the UL212 is what's causing it to be woolly. I just wish Epi would make a stright up 2 x 12-inch. Another interesting setup would be the UL212 with a UL310 on top. Wicked. Unfortunatley I don't have £600 to splash out on the experiment.
  19.
Have you tried the OLP musicman copies? I don't know what difference there is in string spacing between them and musicmans (musicmen?) but mine's really comfortable and the string spacing is fine in my opinion. They now make active ones with two pups as well. olp guitars
It's actually 1/4-inch narrower at the bridge than the genuine Musicman Stingray 5.

    Epifani 112

I run a UL112 and a T112NYC from a UL502 amp. I've only once used the UL112 on it's own. The two cabs have different responses which complement each other. The NYC is very deep toned whereas the UL is more middy. I find it a great combination. Very loud, very punchy and nicely growly. Even at 5'6" tall I can carry both from the car in one trip.
  21.
I've played bass with Gerrard Kenny (wrote the Minder theme tune) on piano
He also wrote "New York, New York, (so good they named it twice)" Saw him entertain at a dinner in London run by "D.E.A.F. - The Distiguished Engineers Audio Federation". It was a social organisation for the recording industry which raised money for deaf children. All I remember is that it was bl**dy loud. Nuff said.
  22. I'm sure this has all been done before but anyway - I used to jam with Denny Laine (Moody Blues and Wings) when he was resident at the original Blues Tavern in Farnham A previous band supported Doctor Feelgood on two occasions. Also supported the Jones Gang (Kenny Jones -Small Faces/The Who, Rick Wills - Small Faces/Foreigner, Robert Hart - Bad Company) We were also once supported by the Trevor Burton Band. Trevor was an original member of The Move. Last year I had the pleasure of jamming one number wth Rick Sanders (Violin) of Fairport Convention. Awesome.
Whens the next one
Mustn't do it too often otherwise it devalues the occassion. I would think sometime in the spring. Probably on a Sunday as some work on Saturdays and there is less chance of clashing with gigs. One question is during or out-of school holiday periods?

Now that everything is done and dusted, today I was able to make a donation of £130 to the Meningitis Trust, this being the difference between the total attendees subscriptions and the cost of the room. Well done everyone.
  25.
I can recommend DR strings - hibeams, sunbeams or the fatbeams. Available from most places like stringbusters or stringsdirect etc. I haven't tried any flats on mine so can't speak for them. Hamster
+1 I fitted TI Flats onto my JOBO 5.
