1. I've always said if I play and a gig and don't make the odd mistake I'm not trying hard enough never been one for learning bass lines note for note but like to react to what is going on around me and compliment where I can, echoing a cool guitar lick or drum fill when I know where they're going. By the time I realise I've hit a duff note I'm already past it so grin like a cheshire cat and carry on!
2. Good stuff!! Well, in the next few weeks I'll have a measure up and itemise what I need and ping it across for a quote!!!
3. Custom Cables!!!!!!!! Excellent as I am going to be fully cabling my rack soon to tidy it up!! Do I get a discount for mentioning basschat?????
4. I'm covered through the MU, have occassionally used some of their other services such as Contract advice so have been happy to carry on paying knowing they are there if I need them
5. Hello fellow low enders I have had this cab for years, actually got it from the boys in the factory when they were still in Essex....happy days! Anyway, I would dearly love to give it a bit of TLC as it has served me well for over 13 years but I suddenly realised I haven't got a clue how to get the front grill off? It is covered with the tweed effect cloth, initial prodding doesn't reveal any obvious screws. Do I just stick a lever in between the grill and the cabinet and prize it out or is there something else I should be doing? Appreciate any help you can give!!
6. I get periods like that, sometimes it just a day or a week where I feel I'm fighting the instrument rather than playing it. Sometimes a bit of a break away helps, especially if I've been playing a lot and sometimes I forget about technique and everything else and stick on a few albums I love and just mess around playing over the top just having fun with it and seeing what flows. Only thing I know for sure is when I am having one of those days if I fixate on it it makes it a lot worse!!
7. A recent video with an american chap I play for, shot in a really cool disused factory in Sheffield, unfortunately I never actually got to meet the lady!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-4x3-YwJE4
8. Wow great band, great bass player...have to say I'm with wateroftyne and silddx on this. Great groove and feel and he has some moves!! May have to rip them off at my gig tonight although not sure a skinny white guy is going to look quite as good, ha ha! Best thing about these guys.....you can tell they're having fun and loving it! My biggest pet pieve about live bands, not looking as if they're enjoying themselves!!!!!!!
9. I guess I considered myself a bass player after my first gig, that's when I really understood I was performing a role and I've been proud to perform it ever since. Not sure about the term 'musician'......I know people who have called drummers musicians.....kind of puts me off the term
10.
youz?.... alright. I am a trained joiner, and in my experience, 2 pieces of timber glued together tended to not be as strong as a single piece of timber. I think it was a fair conclusion to draw. and i have seen the scarf joints break off before. was i totally wrong? I don't think so.
Having just gone through the shuker build course we were talking about angled headstocks and he told me that a scarf joint was a lot stronger than an angled headstock and neck all cut from a single piece of wood......although i then went for a three piece neck glued together which was the strongest of all....as long as you're using decent glue it is stronger than the wood
11. Ooooh I love this thread Thunderbird - Got one and love it, has to be played with the strap as low as it will go otherwise you look like a tw@t! Warwicks - Must say only ever played one and maybe I got lucky but this is my go to bass for tone and playability and will never part with it Modulus - Had a flea bass....loved it! Fender - Urrrrggggggghhhhhhh although still managed to find myself thinking I'd like a really old one....think this is what makes me hate them the most! Don't like playing them but for some reason still want to own one! Stingray - Really wanted one, when I tried to play it felt and played like a coffee table Single Cutaway Basses.......just wrong! Damn I feel better for that!
12. Looking at yours I am reasonably sure it is an LP pup
13. I think the LP pickups were the only ones to have the circular bevel on the front of the pick up? I remember looking in to this when I got my flea 4 string and it had the LP pups in. Very early versions still came with the LP logo but this did eventually get changed to the modulus. I think I am remembering correctly but if not I am sure I'll get corrected soon
14. Saw Tremonti supporting Slash last thursday with Wolfgang Van Halen on bass....was very impressed with him actually as I had never heard him play before but I did laugh a lot as he seemed to be changing basses after most songs!!
15. That looks great!! Always thought I should take the time to learn a little more about this....thanks for the heads up!
16. Its just a clear laquer finish, with the 5 day schedule Jon said you would struggle to put a hard poly finish on it due to the number of coats and drying time but I am more than happy with this as I am used to it form my warwick basses. Jon did say we could easily go back and apply a differant finish if that was what was wanted though...would just obviously add to teh price a little. I can't agree more with you Gust0o...I have teh utmost repsect for anyone who does this! I lost the router a couple of times but luckily it was early on and the marks came out with the shaping and sanding! Friday is the most stressful day!!! After four days of producing a lovely body you then have to drill a hole from the pick up cavity to the control cavity with a long thin drill bit making sure you don't mark teh front or come out the back of the instrument!! And getting the indivdual bridge pieces looking straight and level was hell!! Worth it though!
17. Hi guys, had to show this off..... I went up to Jon Shukers place last week and spent five days under his watchful eye building my own bass from scratch. Monday it was a couple of blocks of wood but by friday evening it was fully formed and working and I genuinely could not be happier with the results! Jon is a master craftsman and even though I have had no experience of doing anything like this under his guidance I was able to produce a bass that exceded my wildest dreams! I've copied a Ritter body, thrown in the electrics from the Yamaha Attitude II and based the dimensions and wood on my Warwick FNA Jazzman. If you're interested in a top end instrument, do this course! Build your own!! Can not recommend it enough!
18. I bought one from teh Carvin factory a couple of years ago in san diego when I was visiting friends and I just walked through with it in hand. American Airlines never even said a word when I walked onto the plane with it in a hard case and found a locker to put it in for me Its interesting because when I have gigged abroad I have just put it in teh outsized luggage area and picked it up along with my luggage and never had a single question asked at either end.
19. Certainly happens to me!! I always get low points where I start looking at the various bands I'm in not progressing and doing all they could be and then something will happen to get the ol' enthusiasm up again and its all smiles! I've always figured its the same as other areas in life work/relationships/friendships....its never full on all teh time and you definately get low points you need to work through but when ever I get one of those fantastic moments I know there's nothing else I'd rather be doing!
20. Jeez, its sh*t like this that gets my back up......and would you believe it I'm talking about the crap that has been written here rather than the 'is it a rip off/isn't it a rip off' argument. I've actually known Diana for a few months having met her through some musical contacts of mine and she's a sweetheart. Don't like her style, don't listen to it...think she's talentless?? well a very successful stint in the west end and the fact that I've been in a rehearsal room with her when she has sung tells me otherwise... do we really need to slag someone off and reduce a chatboard I've come to love to nothing more than a page out of Heat Magazine?? Right, rant over
21. I'd back Loz196 up on the merits of a 4 x 12. I play through a trace 4 x 12 and I love the tone from that. More than handles the low b on my six string but still has a lot of clarity through the register. The only issue I have ever had with 12" speakers is if you are on a small stage and only stood a foot in front of it, all the sound goes past your knees and you can struggle to hear yourself even though it sounds great out front
22. I use a Tapco J1400, Tapco are teh budget Mackie range. It's not a bass specific amp but I did a lot of research when i was looking and I have to say I love it! Plenty of power options and really provides what I think is an uncoloured tone form my pre-amp! Plus they're not bank breakers and at the end of the day why should they be!
