The ones I've found online are all MIJ.
Always liked the look of them, they sound right up my street as a P bass fan. Awesome guitars
They really are. Even though I'd done a fair bit of reading up before getting mine, I wasn't prepared for just how awesome they are. Mine came with shot 'tronics (amongst other things) and I was very underwhelmed by it's tone but after lots of fact finding and trawling the G&L forums I was able to pool enough sketchy info to return them back to original and unleash the beast. Mine will be coming to Moffat for the bash if anyone wants to check it out and test my rather lofty claim above.
Yeah it gets the fat punch of a P bass when I play with the settings, but it always sounds way too grindy and hence won't sit in the mix as well for some of the stuff I use it for. One of my bands is a folk/rock band, and I need a really percussive thump that I get from my P bass. I can use the grindy sound to full effect in my other band which is more of a grungy/garage rock 3 piece, but the sound of the bass is just too exposed in the folk/rock thing (tried once and didn't work for me). Hence, I could use it for both bands if I could nail the P bass sound. I'm wanting to get the Precision set up professionally too, which will mean a trip to Mansons in Exeter, and more than likely a spell without my P bass.
My L-1000 is basically a passive, neck pup only L-2000 (with some additional passive wizardry under the hood) and I'm of the mind that it produces a more pronounced P tone* than any Fender P can.... I fancy Leo thought so too. * with the ability, if I should wish, to go classic "single coil P" at the flick of a switch. Fan-bleeding-tastic.

The audience seem suitably impressed. -
.... I can get a sort-of Stingray sound from it, but can't get it to sound like a Precision....
In my experience the opposite is more true. To start with the bridge pickup is in the wrong spot to get the 'ray tone not to mention the preamp being all wrong. The neck pup is pretty much directly in P territory and when soloed (whether in passive or active) hits the nail on the head. There are several mods you can do to the existing switching arrangements which open up even more possibilities.

It may be a little low but if the strings aren't fretting out at the first fret then it must be within tolerances. However, it might be a good idea to get a new nut fitted purely on the strength of the width of those rather roomy slots. Looks like its' a righty lefty nut. The guides for neck relief are just that .... guides. In a perfect world where all woods were identical then fine but I would set your neck to how it wants to be rather than copying a model example half way round the world somewhere.
Without a B string, isn't it just an "Ongo"? I'll get my coat...
Then by that logic all 4 string lower register guitar players have been playing with their asses all this time.
....and get made out to be some kind of stingray drug pusher from my user name....
C'mon Pete man I'm hurtin'. Gees a couple o' lines o' that sweet 2 band EQ.... and wee bag o' 3 plus 1 headstock for the come down.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the going rate, ridiculous though it is.
Have the Schaller on my early Streamer and they are really good, the only improvement would be if you didn't have to drag the strings through the bridge to change them!
And this is where the excellent Schaller 2000 comes in - currently my favorite off the shelf bridge.

In my experience, the mass of a bridge and it's union to the body certainly seems to go somewhere to tightening your top end... a tad. These days I tend to use "Badass bridge" on bass fora as a handy term which encompasses many of the high mass bridges on the market and leave the reader to do their own research and draw their own conclusions. At the end of the day (and I've proved this to myself) a second hand high mass £5 cheapie off ebay can give you exactly what a Badass bridge can.... but without the kudos (less kudos these days (in my book anyway) now people have hiked their "sell on" price all of a sudden). Sustain? Who knows. Who even cares. Do high mass bridges make any tonal difference? Well, yes. Is it the tonal difference that you were looking for? It would be nice. Is the resultant difference significant enough to get all het up about? No. Do members of the listening public, other musicians - including members of your band or your mum even care if you are using a Badass, a Babicz, a £5 cheapie off ebay or a Fender BBOT? Hell no. If you put a bass up for sale with an expensive aftermarket bridge on it will it sell quicker? Probably.

Unconventional wiring questions - tone on each p.up! Help!
Ou7shined replied to Max Normal's topic in Repairs and Technical
... Can't really build it outside the bass though as I don't have any way of measuring tone except with my a vibrating string and my ears!
Yeah I just kind of meant wire it up without attaching to a control plate or drilling holes through from the rear until you've ironed out the bugs.
By the way, sorry that our sigs look like before and after photo's. I am actually a cat lover.
What the hell is it btw, clingfilm? -
Unconventional wiring questions - tone on each p.up! Help!
Ou7shined replied to Max Normal's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sounds like a fantastic approach Max. Why not go and build it (roughly and outside the bass if needs be) and report back. -
I'm amazed at the rear strap button. Was that really the best spot they could find to plonk it?
I'd be fascinated to know how the duty and VAT came out at only £38. Care to explain? Phil
Hi Phil, how's the new job down the HM Customs and Excise fraud office going for you.

I don't mind the headstock, it is a Lakland and not a Fender after all but the bridge is just too outta wack for the design (not a big fan of Lakland bridges at the best of times).

Haha I knew you wouldn't leave the tasty run bit out.
Just been thinking; slipped through the net SO FAR might be more apt! I one got a bass from the States and I has well chuffed when I didn't get clattered with a big bill... till it arrived 3 weeks later. Turns out one or two couriers to speed the process of delivery up, sort out all the nasty stuff after it's been delivered. Not saying it is in this case but don't go spending any funds you have put aside to pay the expected duty.
Uh-oh. I hope it's the happy ending this time.
... i only paid £38 Duty and vat for it too!....
SCORE! Any reason why it slipped through the net?
Im a bit lost now can we have a summary so far? Does putting something like some thick paper under all four strings and bringing it back into tune solve it? Which strings do it? Is it only when playing open strings? Does a twist seem possible as you have said you have tried lots of new strings, So for it to happen more than once and to be the same string is odd? Have you got a set of 45's to try and see if they get rid of it?
This is why I've butted out and let the conspiracies run a little further until we get some proper feedback about this phenomenon. I even went as far as intentionally putting some twists in a string to test this theory.... nothing.

Active fender precision special sounds dull
Ou7shined replied to MatthewKeys's topic in Bass Guitars
Try a Badass (or similar) bridge on it. If it doesn't work, you'll easy get your money back on it and you've eliminated that line of enquiry.
