The best Formal, and Informal, musical lesson of your life?
Dad3353 replied to ARGH's topic in General Discussion
My 'Middle C Principle', recounted in a previous post, here ... -
Err... Not exist..?
-
Darn it..! I hadn't thought of that..! Hmm... Where's the nearest telephone..? Quickly, now..!

To be discussed again once you reach the age to retire. With my modest career, and occasional gigs, I'm now very happy with the pension I receive, having contributed for all those decades. It helped that the jobs I had were interesting, even if modestly paid; the gigs weren't bad either. It's possible to have both sides of one's bread buttered, and still have cream towards the end.

On the other hand, Life is too short for any pettiness. Let it go, you're bigger than that, and no kittens have been harmed.

Luxury. 'Back then', our 'tour bus' was an Ariel Square Four; we had to run alongside, each with an element of the drum kit tied with shoelaces to our backs, swerving around the telegraph poles, in t'rain, with no shoes, from Norwich to Cardiff, most week-ends. ...

I'm surprised to hear that you don't find this head to be 'loud'. In good state, they are often used to explode ex-nazi coastline bunkers with sonic power. It won't work well with small 1x10 cabs, but given a 4x12 stack, or 2x15, it'll remove all the glass from your house, and the neighbours. What cab are you using..? All this depends, of course, of it being in its original (or correctly upgraded...) specification, original 'Partridge' transformers, and six matched output valves. In full swing, it would melt the Orange Super Crush. There's no comparaison with Peavey amps, either. If it's not loud, get it fixed, and stand far enough back when you turn it on afterwards. Yes, they are heavy, though.

I don't think that 'cheap' is the best description, with its connotations of 'lack of quality'. Perhaps the term 'inexpensive' would be more accurate..?

Overkill, but if cash is no object...

Recommended software for mix/ medley/ mashup?
Dad3353 replied to uk_lefty's topic in General Discussion
It would indeed, but it would be a bit more 'fiddly' than Reaper, for instance, in my opinion (I use both, but for different things; each has its uses...). -
No need, ever, for a sub with an acoustic kit. For an e-kit, I use 'sport' earphones, which are lightweight and allow all ambient sound (they're not really 'in ears'...), so I get the full benefit of my drums, mixed how I like it, whatever the FOH or Monitoring for the band, whilst still hearing what's going on on stage from the foldback monitors and backline amps.. This solution works in every case, whether practicing alone, rehearsing, in a pub or a stadium, and it costs next to nothing. I take the feed from my Tascam audio interface (two headphone sockets...) which send the audio from my Superior Drummer laptop to FOH and foldback. It would work in exactly the same manner if I was using only the e-drum 'brain' for the sound, as they all have an independent headphone 'out'. Here's the type of headset I use; no issues hearing bass drum, snare, hi-hat... whatever... Much lighter, better, controlled sound, and less messing about than any 'sub' solution, if it's only for the drummer.

I see no problem with this, as long as the normal conditions, the same as any ad are respected. I would suggest either ... Effects For Sale ... ... or ... Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale ... ... for such items. Hope this helps, and Good Luck With The Sale.

They don't come much better than this, and at an unbeatable low cost ... Hal Leonard Bass Method, Complete Edition ... Note the spiral binding, allowing it to lie flat. Note also that if you get stuck on any point on theory, ask here; you'll get help.

It's better now, even back to normal. Whatever has been done, keep doing it, please. Thanks for the rapid reaction; have a splendid day.

Good evening... Both BC and GC are very sluggish, slow to respond and refresh, today, where all my other sites browsed are not (PC, Windows 11, Chrome or Brave browsers...). Anything going on, or just unlucky..? Either way, have a great day. Douglas

Recommended software for mix/ medley/ mashup?
Dad3353 replied to uk_lefty's topic in General Discussion
This is very easy to do using Reaper on a PC. It should be possible to talk you through it, too. Download and install it (it's free, fully functioning, to trial...) and see how it inspires you. -
I'm of the opposite persuasion; if it ain't broken, don't fix it. I don't 'tweak' my hifi when listening to stuff; I wouldn't 'tweak' a band mix, once it's been set right. I might compensate for a venue filling up, for example, but would certainly not be 'riding the EQ faders' all night. Vocal Fx, or 'special Fx' on the drums for 'riddim' stuff, is different, maybe.

Arbiter Flats ...

I asked for help, moving a bass I'd bought from 'A' to 'B'. Steve stepped up to the plate, and made the connections in a timely and fuss-free manner, earning my thanks and this Positive Feedback post. A Trooper, and an all-round Good Egg. Thanks, Steve.

Update : Bass transport all sorted; thanks to all participants...

Latest (and last..?) Update : The Eagle Has Landed; I repeat, The Eagle Has Landed..! I drove over to a nearby bar to meet my 'mule', who handed over a very large cardboard box which, once unpacked at home, revealed my new (to me...) HB50 bass guitar, in a splendid, and very well padded, soft case/gig bag. It's as new, plus the improvements made by the Seller, and it certainly packs a punch when plugged into my Fender Bassman 50w valve amp. The whole journey has taken three months, with the splendid cooperation of BC members (you know who you are...), family and friends. My thanks to all involved; I'll post a couple of NBD photos once I sort out my camera and stuff. Yippee..! -
Here is my contribution to the October 2024 Basschat Composition Challenge, illustrated with a picture chosen by Wolfram. It's tempting, to tuck in, taste the Turkish Tavuk göğsü, try the Tulumba, but... What's that, lurking in the shadows..? The instruments are Vst Darbuka drums programmed in 9/4 with MIDI, and a hypnotic Arabian orchestra and singer (Kontakt...) holding our attention (Stare at the picture; did the snake just move..?). All in Reaper, of course, with only a spot of Ozone 8 on the orchestra and the Master track. There is no AI used anywhere in this production. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.

Yes, we've noticed.

Anyone recently taken an instrument to France?
Dad3353 replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
These exemptions apply to instruments etc taken out of the country for one's professional use, ie : to play a gig. If, outgoing to a continental gig, there is no instrument, but there is one when returning, it would be cheating, of course, but could pass, as there's no record, or list, of outgoings and incoming. If it's just returning after a weekend jaunt to Europe, though, with no gig, it wouldn't apply at all, and should be declared. -
Yes, quite a trek. Lower Normandy, really, halfway between Rennes and Le Mans. Worth it, though, and we played further afield than that occasionally, too. One memorable Saturday playing near Marseilles, with an overnight dash back for a couple of us for a 'freebie' gig on the Sunday, near home..! Over a thousand kms clocked up, that weekend. At another festival, south Brittany, I fell ill (sunstroke...), got taken to hospital, so missed the tour bus, and had to walk and hitch-hike home, 400 kms, in the early hours of the next dawn. I couldn't do it now, of course.
