1. No problem, I got mine from here some years ago: http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/products/books-plans-5/to-make-a-double-bass-h-s-wake-109.aspx Seems to be currently out of stock. The Traeger book looks good though, quite tempting...
2. Not quite a repair book but very useful (and reasonably priced), is "To Make a Double Bass" by H S Wake: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product_details.cfm?ProdID=2315
3. I believe there will still be a place for magnetic pickups, real wood and double basses for that nostalgic 'analogue' reality. I also think that there will be more available in a virtual domain, where we can put on a headset and some fancy gloves and play any 'virtual' bass we like, be it a 50s Fender, 16C double bass or a 21C Parker Fly. It certainly won't be dull .
4. Smooth and hassle free - top gent to deal with. Thanks for giving a new home to my trusty David Gage Realist .

Congrats! Will there be cake?
6. Lady asks: "Is that a pink Fender Precision I see before me?"
Fender Precision is an anagram of "reinforced penis"
7. 25 & 28, but my eyesight stinks
8.
Just one of those plastic cheapy things
Mine's an old Yamaha chromatic tuner, cost about £15 at the time and it works fine. For less than £20 you should be able to get a great tuner which will do it - well worth the money IMO (especially if you want to set up your bass, change string gauges etc etc). Failing that, you'll need to use your ears as suggested above.
9. Difficult to say from that. Sounds to me like the 'promoter' wants you to play for free.
10. Does your tuner pick up any note, or is it fixed at EADG via a slider / selecter. If the latter, set it to D and all should be well.
11. It can be done using 'proper' DB pizzicato technique (using side of the fingers pointing down), although it requires stamina and lots of practice (it's never easy ). Check out some Avishai Cohen.
12. Shame, can't make it as I'm also gigging in Stamford tonight. Great band, saw them at the Skeg 'Mini-Fest' earlier this year.
13.
Forgot to mention my teacher said my bass was too low, the stuff she's shown me about hand and arm position seems to work better and feel more natural with the bass higher. I've got the pin fully extended and it's about 4 inches too short, the original pin doesn't seem to come out otherwise I'd just get a longer one, any ideas anyone? I'm currently practising with the bass on a step, it looks a bit like Tom Cruise's wedding photos.
You could look at getting a longer endpin (I managed to get mine out, but if it's a cheapy, you could cut it). I got mine from http://www.superspikes.co.uk/index.html. Very reasonable...
14. You can run a lead from the amp to the first speaker and then a 'link' lead from the first to the second speaker. Each speaker is rated at 8 Ohms and using a link cable would connect both speakers in parallel, giving a 4 Ohm load to the amp. The amp will achieve it's full output at 4 Ohms. The speakers will take either jack or speakon and the amp has a speakon out. Thus you can use speakon to jack or speakon to speakon, whichever takes your fancy. If you can use both the speakon out and the jack out from the amp (you probably can, but check the manual), then these are also in parallel and would give the same 4 Ohm load using the same speakers. Either way, you'll end up with the same load
15. If you can afford it, keep both. You might miss the ray34 once it's gone. When you get more 'into' the different basses, you may discover that each has it's place with a different sound / feel.
16. Blimey, this is bigger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOhwt7uMutY&feature=fvwrel

18. Play higher up on the D string. +1 for Graphite

Quiet B

Have you checked that the B is 'anchored' properly at both ends? Some basses have a string retainer near the nut to pull the B down tightly over the nut to make good contact. If it doesn't have one, make sure the string is at the bottom of the tuning post to keep the sharpest angle possible across the nut. Also check the bridge end and make sure it's seating properly. Next thing to check is the pickup height. Failing all that probably a dodgy B string
20. Bought some straplocks from Chris. Quick response and a gent to deal with . Wil
21. You're welcome. I do think Phil Gould has put on some weight though...
22. Nice, I bet the strings on it aren't original
