It would be great to have been born with a 'cool' name already. If I had to choose, 'Pino Palladino' would be high on the list. Great name (and it rhymes, what could be more memorable than that?). Pity I can't play like him

Changing real names to stagenames appears more prevalent amongst the guitardist community, then amongst bassists. I'm struggling to find good examples of bass players who've adopted stagenames other than Sting (I've lived a fairly sheltered life ).

Even John Pastorius adopted 'Jaco'. I suppose it's what starts to sound familiar after a while. Jaco? John? Jaco?

I've often pondered if a cool stagename could, in some way, be contributory to greater success. For instance, would Sting have been as successful using his real name? Therefore, would I be better off changing my name, rather than putting in lots of practicing, for a step up on the ladder to bass playing success? As it's predominantly 'in the fingers', any bass with a bridge pup in the same position (preferably single coil). Active or passive doesn't really matter. If you can play like 'Jaco', you'll sound like him .

Those 'crazy' Dutch, not so crazy after all . Although I'm left handed, I 'forced' myself to play right handed when I started playing bass, for the same reason that I though it would be difficult to find a good selection of left handed instruments.

If you're happy with the truss rod setting at the moment, it's unlikely to need tweaking after putting new strings on. I've regularly swopped string gauges, types and manufacturers, but only once needed a tweak. That was when I put Roto James Jamerson flats on which were very heavy and high tension. Just stick the new strings on, tune up and play. See how it feels and make any tweaks to action / truss if you need to afterwards.

So would I in all probability lol. I believe Jonas Hellborg locked himself away early on in his career and emerged suddenly on the scene and blew people away with his 'virtuosity'. Food for thought.

Are they a product of their environment? Would the same person locked away in a room with a bass guitar without any external influence produce the same 'music'? Maybe we should all stop listening and just play what we feel.

I liked the Big Band album (the earlier one with MM et al on it). I thought that, for instance, Mr Miller sounded like MM rather than JP playing (I believe) Teen Town. Maybe an extreme example, but certainly, some of the other bassists also had their own 'feel', rather than just being Jaco clones.

That's a tricky one. Bronze strings have a nylon core and are lower tension, typically medium gauge. You'reouy going to use heavier gauge steel core strings, thus this will put more strain on the bridge. Depends how strong your cheapy is really. I'm reluctant to say do it in case it does tear the bridge off! Let me know how you get on if you do try it ;-) If you are going for higher tension strings, I would go slowly, gently and watch for any flexing of the bridge, body and neck as your tensioning the strings.

I'm afraid not. I'm waiting on a used J body at the moment, as one's come up that suits my needs and is already painted.

Yes, you can. I've used regular roundwounds, rotosound black tapewounds and thomastik flats in the past instead of the regular bronze ones. I've only used low tension type strings and light gauge roundwounds as I found I got best results with those. Be careful with heavy gauge higher tension strings though (although it will depend on what type of acoustic bass you have).

If you play any public gigs rather than purely function type stuff, it might be worth putting some upcoming gigs on the website. A potential punter may wish to see you live first. Alternatively, some 'live' video clips might help. Looks good though
