  1. I was reading about them recently and wondered if there is any experience with using them on Barefaced bass cabs? I'm considering putting one on my BTII cab if there is any good feedback about them. If so how did you mount the mic socket as it looks like i would have to cut a hole somewhere on the cab for to mount the xlr socket.
  2. For everything where the bass is unattended or in the back of a van, i use a Hiscox or Scott Dixon case. Anything else i use a good quality gig bag stood up in the rear or front footwell with the seatbelt through the straps or handles.
  3. I picked up my series II from the alembic factory and brought it home with me on the plane. i called the airline and asked them to put it in the check in notes that i can carry it on board and put in the staff locker. On arrival back in Heathrow i walked through goods to declare and they just waved me through. I guess they thought it was a personal item. I got the seller to send me a receipt which i carried with me in case i was stopped and asked for proof of purchase i could show i bought it before i went to usa.
  4. I'm not sure how those P style pickups are configured but i have an alembic with those style pickups and it does have a sound closer to the alembic single coils than the AXY/MXY pickups.
  5. Actually it is only the Alembic series I and II basses that have true single coil pickups and the third coil you are correct is a humcancelling coil. Their other pickups in their range are not true single coils but hum cancelling. one coil with a magnet and the other without. The AXY and MXY pickups are the same size it's just the AXY has a larger casing. The Exceptions are the Fat boy pickups which are the same size as the AXY pickups but have the larger magnet from the series bass pickups, and the P-style pickups which I think are configured to noise cancel each other.
  6. Hopefully i have redeemed myself for not reading posts properly before replying. 😇 I've only done 4 EUB gigs so not many pictures. This was the first one I did and use my regular bass rig which was barefaced big baby II and alembic preamp and Synq power amp. Since then I have bought a Schertler Unico to use with the EUB which sounds great and perfect really for a small setup. However we did a couple of under cover out door gigs and found the Unico was not delivering enough bottom end and volume to compete with keys, 2 saxes and drums. So i bought a Barefaced LF800 sub from one of the guys on this forum and plugged it into the Unico's sub output socket and it works great. I only set the volume just enough to fill the bottom end not dominate it. If I find a pic with the schertler and sub i will post that.
  7. Ahem, true confession. I didn't read the title about the thread carefully enough top realise it was about Double bass and EUB's so I posted my electric bass rig. DOH!!!! I will see if i can change it and get my EUB rig posted instead.
  8. I have tried those labella black nylons but didn't like anything about them, sound or feel so stuck them on my acoustic bass guitar only because they are not clattery like the bronze strings. This summer i thought i would try a new set of D'addario chromes for my 4 string with P style pickups to see how that fared. At the moment they are kind of ok but no wow factor in the sound compared to my usual prosteels. I'm going to save judgement till i get a chance to gig with them or do a rehearsal so i can check how they are in context with a band. But i can't see me moving to all flats anytime this century.
  9. Ok got rid of my mistaken posting.
  10. For the past year since the band got an IEM system, BehringerX32 i think). I have tried various headphones from ACS moulded earplugs, sony domestic headphones, behringer, sennhieser and Shure body packs and i still get edgy distortion through whatever headphones I use. My thoughts are that it has something to do with Gain staging, but i don't really understand fully what that is or how to address it. For DI I have used the DI on my bass rack preamp which is a transforrmer isolated one, or a Stanley Clarke Acoustic preamp pedal. All my basses are active but in order to use the IEM i have to set the volume on my bass to just barely open, my preamp gain to 1.5 and the sound is still edgy. What I don't understand is this, i have a Tascam GB10 headphone practice unit which I can plug the same bass in, set a sensible volume and that does not distort. I can use my SC acoustic preamp and do the same thing and plug an external sound source in and whack the volume up and there is no distortion and normal playing volumes with whatever headphones i'm using also. Then when using my same bass rig for gigging and give the sound guy the same DI out from the preamp, i don't have any complaints about distortion from my setup. Now considering the OP has a passive bass with similar issues i don't think having an active bass is the issue here. So how come this new rack IEM system is having problems with what ever of my basses i use through our IEM system? Is there a setting that i can suggest to the guys?
  11. Not the best balancing basses but you can get used to it. 👍🏾
  12. Here is a photo from a few years ago on the first gig with my new bass.
  13. I am in no way expert in law but, having a quick look through the t&c's i note this. 8. 14. Yeah shed loads of digital photos plus tour schedules, venues, posters stickers lanyards backstage passes. At some point i will make a montage from some of them and mount it in a large picture frame.
  15. I started out on 4 strings and used to down tune the E- string depending on the track if I needed to go under low E usually Eb or D. Then i got 5 stringers which are my main gigging basses. I still have a 4 string and tend to use them for particular gigs where i don't need anything below E. That said since I play 5 stringers mainly i find things easier to play on that bass even if I don't use any notes on the B string. As others have said it's a good thumb rest. I went through a short phase of tuning my 4 string BEAD since i hardly use the G-string for reggae. But that became somewhat confusing and 'fumblesome' when playing a regular tuned 4 string having to convince my brain which bass i'm playing. If I had to have only one choice it would be a 5 string.
  16. At the moment i am mostly using mine for quiet practice at home, rehearsals sending it's output to the power amp/return socket on the provided bass head. That's a nice tidy pedal board. My guitar pedal board looks like the aftermath of a fight in a rope factory.
  17. I have an EUB and so far have found the best combination to be my Schertler Unico combo which I think is about 180w and a barefaced LF800 powered sub driven from the Schertler's sub woofer or aux output channel. I have it set so that the sub only warms things up without too much emphasis or domination on the low end.
  18. I like looking at new gear but never really had GAS. Like many of us here i have a few really decent basses, cabs and amps that suit me perfectly. I came into bass later in life so didn't go through lots of rigs and basses. I'm not a collector, though i do admire those players who have lots of basses for different occasions as well as sound. There is no gear i'm looking to buy for the forseeable future.
  19. I think i have only heard one Rush album, "Moving Pictures" and i remember buying the album not too long after being introduced to the band by someone at college. I absolutely loved it and the bass playing too. Whilst i do love rock music for the guitar, and before that album came out the only rock bass playing that moved me was John Entwhistle, Phil Lynott, and Ric Grech who played bass on the Blind Faith album. I think it is their tone and the melodic quality of their bass lines that was appealing since at that time I was also listening to alot of jazz fusion where that kind of virtuousity on bass was the norm. Geddy Lee gets the thumbs up from me.🖕
  20. Not looking for anything at the moment. That said i wouldn't turn my nose up if a fairly recent (Year 2000+) series II Alembic short scale bass came up at an affordable price. But i'm not actively looking.
  21. I believe Alembic were closely related with Bag End back in their early days and you can find a lot of info on bag end speakers cabs on the alembic web site. if you type this into your browser search bar you can find some links to the alembic threads discussing these speaker cabs. Bag End speakers site:alembic.com Hope it helps. Happy hunting
  22. Only if you don't want to exploit the lower bottom end and the choice of a different tonality that you can get from note choices on the B string. I gig mostly with a five string bass these days though because most of the gigs i do benefit from using the B string. I do occasionally use a 4 string live if i am doing gigs where i don't need to go below bottom E.
  23. Well i bought a new case from them for my other bass as well, and they put in padding for the best fit on both cases plus the harnesses so it was an all in price so i don't know the price of the harness on it's own so I think best to ask them directly.
  24. Seems a good starting price too.
