1.
I always thought Andy Rourke was an excellent bass player - inventive with a great sound and a great feel . Very important to the sound of that band , too ; the bass was always way up in the mix on those Smiths records .
You've hit the nail on the head there. Very forward in the mix and weaving in and out of the lead line, very very musical I thought. No leaping about stage histrionics either, mind you the Mozza did enough of that for everyone! I'm gonna look out for other stuff of his.
2. Cheers, the name does ring a bell. Very/moderately well known?
3. Caught an old recording of The Smiths on Sky Arts 1 the other night. Morrissey's voice gets on my tits after a while but I was quite mesmerised by the Bass player (whoever it was). I'm gonna get caned for that coz it's probably someone well known isn't it? My point is that he was playing a Precision through an old Trace rig no effects of any sort and it sounded superb. His playing was also very 'melodic' fitting with Jonny Mar's twangy Rickenbacker lead line perfectly - loved it. So who was the Bass player? The gig I saw must have been late 80's judging by the hair do's but I might be wrong! LC
4. Hi Sarah, yeah she does play with the WNO. I did the Trout Quintet with her a few years back up in Harlech and I think she's strictly classical!
5.
Ahem Lemoncello my dear friend.... I'm not a bloke..... But I had great fun playing what was your fretless tonight I've made a few trouble free purchases! I also had issues with one guy. And I'm ashamed to say I did agree to buy something and had to back out, but I did back out quickly (due to being given some free gear from a friend instead) I would say, as a rule, this is a great place to "do business" but there are always exceptions.
Erm....crawls away with tail firmly between legs Profuse apologies Debs, I forgot about the Fretless
6. I had to return a brand new never been outa the box Fender Blacktop P to Sounds Live coz it had a 'dead' neck pup. A new one came by return of post without any quibbling - great service! No so great QC on Fender's part however
7. That's nice Lozz, but like you, I can't justify having 3 Precisions! Shouldn't hang about at that price mate!
8. I made the mistake of holding my Markbass rig for a newbie for over a month, you live and learn! As above tho, each 'actual' transaction I've made on here has been very straightforward and I've really enjoyed meeting the buyer/seller (usually in the good old motorway services!). They have all been top blokes!
9. Those Encore P basses got a good write up in BGM and yours has clearly gone up a level! Good luck with that, v nice. LC
10. Hiya FNG and welcome! I was lucky enough to get to New Orleans for Mardi Gras a few years ago. Did one too many hurricanes in Pat O'Briens bar but did meet a rather foxy chick from Biloxi. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I had the cash!
11.
Huw Warren (piano) and Iain Ballamy (saxophone) duo followed by Lloyd Haines (drums) Quartet at Cafe Jazz, Monday 4th Feb starting at 8.45 (ish). An incredible night for £5. Paula Gardiner (bass) trio at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, 5.30pm in the Foyer, Friday 8 Feb. Free!
Hi Sarah, If that's the place on St Mary's street, they have a great blues night last Friday of the month. I must check out some Jazz too! Do you know Mary Condliffe? She used to teach at the Welsh Col, fantastic bassist! Gary
12. Hiya Mel, Can I pounce on the ashtray set please? and do you have the screws? Thanks, Gary
13. Thanks for the Pm's guys - still available. Just to be clear, it is probably unrealistic to send the entire rig by post/courier as I do not have boxes and I'd worry about it getting to it's destination in one piece! As I've already indicated, I'm willing to drive it a couple a hundred miles max which would relate to a fair reach down to the other side of London or up to Nottingham/Peterborough, down to Exeter. If you were prepared to drive a bit then that would cover most of the country I reckon. Straight cash sale or trade/part trade for a Bass, something .'fendery and precisony' or what have you? Cheers, LC
14. We've just struck lucky in finding a fantastic 20 year old who A. Can really sing B. Likes our set and has learned it real quick and C. FITS IN, which is the most important thing. We had to wait a while and see a few to find the right one but Katie has come up trumps. We did audition a guy who had done the Europe thing and up and down this country who had a 10K PA WTF. He also sang really well but was a bit full of himself and we all thought that he'd try and take over. The most difficult band position to fill imo but good luck!
15. Warwick Profet 3.2 though a Warwick 2x10 which had a distinct lack of grunt.
16. Not seen that colour before - stunning!
17. You can tell that's a Rick with yer eyes shut! Good score George, that's a beaut!
18. When I was playing Orchestral music I always worried after a good dress rehearsal that we'd have a crap concert. As it happens mostly the final rehearsal wasn't good and therefore the concert was cracking. We became known as the Dennis Norden Orchestra coz it was generally 'alright on the night'. Same now with the Bass.
19. Well that was 7 mins well spent. Really like that, reminded me of Yes meets Steely Dan! Very musical and a well shot vid too!
20. Rhythm Stick - I've stared at the dots for a couple of months now and YYZ Rush
21.
Good luck with the band, with regard to under the bridge, all saints did a cover of that, may be worth a listen just to get an idea of how it can work with female vocals. all the best , sounds like you all get on well, which is as important as talent imo if the band is to work long term, all the best mate.
Thanks for that fella, I'll have a listen to it. I had no idea they had covered it, you learn something new every day! Thanks also for the encouragement, we all do get on really well. LC
