1. Also as far as getting it to places is concerned, I reckon I can post it for around £20. Let's face it, it doesn't need boxing up or anything! Just wrap and post... I also drive up and down the country a lot for gigs and such, so there's potential to meet somewhere as well if it fits with the diary. Lots of options!
2. Well like I said, United airlines dropped it off the plane with my beloved Infinity inside, no damage to the bass at all! It may sit close to the edges, but it's so strong that it won't compress inwards! Will a Mono Vertigo fit, definitely not I'm afraid. That's the main reason I'm selling up, on the last job I was on I met a bassist who flew his two basses out in a Mono double bag in a flightcase trunk sort of case. I've got a Harvest gig bag and a Warwick leather bag too, so similar concept, I've got a pair of Hiscoxs anyway and the flight case the Infinity came with, so this is a bit surplus! When I bought it I had to refoam it as well. There's a great website called efoam, then you choose your foam there, give them the exact measurements down to the mm, they'll laser cut the block so size, and then with a pen to mark out, and cut with a box cutter. Easy peasy. I cut mine in a rush about 20 minutes before I was due to pack the car to head for the airport, I could've done a better job!
3. As promised! 4. Whilst I've been offloading stuff I don't want / need any more, this is the next one to suffer from the cull. It's a Peli (Pelican) 1750 rifle case, bought to get my bass to and from 'Murica in one piece. These are pretty much bomb proof; the military use them and it's IP67 rated, meaning it's dust proof can can be submersed for up to 30 minute before it leaks... But it needs to be over 57kg before it'll actually sink as its 100% buoyant and pressurised. Also crush proof, United Airlines didn't manage to break it and they dropped it off the plane! Only a bit of damage to the handle to show for that. It's got wheels, not too heavy and people really do avoid you when you're dragging it around a busy airport tongue emoticon Currently cut out for a Warwick Infinity with around 10mm each side, will need a new sheet of foam ideally. Good for small body basses (Warwick, precision, jazz deluxe etc). £150 takes it from Rochdale, postage possible at additional cost! Pics to follow
5. Typical isn't it? I was in the same boat when I wanted a one shot solution to run my Sennheiser wireless system!
6. I use an Artec power supply, dead cheap and I've had it for ages and it's got two 300ma outputs along with the several 100ma outputs, all isolated and the 300ma ones are selectable between 9 and 12v
7. Probably due to high standards mixed with getting an amazing deal. The Infinity is in dock at the moment having some bits it needs doing done, gigged this one the last two nights and it can certainly hold a candle to the Infinity. This one is the one I'd be taking abroad and such though as its much more replaceable if / when airlines smash it.
8. Cheers guys Gave it a setup yesterday and gigged it, even without an amp and straight into the desk it sounded mega. Not bad for a backup I guess! Right... onto the next project!
9. Part of it will be that, but yeah the saddles are riding high - I've not touched the action since her arrival so lots to attend to there!
10. I best update this, not sure if the Infinity is on here since it's refin, but I'll do that soon! However, if you've not seen in build diaries I've been busy restoring a Corvette FNA Jazzman 5 which I got as a backup for the Infinity... and I've just finished it! The full details can be seen on the thread, but the short story is it wasn't in the best of states when I picked it up, and has had a complete strip down and refinish in tru oil
11. Sorry about the silence guys, but erm... it's finished I couldn't be happier with it!
12. As the description says really. Got a pair of Hartke HyDrive HX112s with RoqSolid covers, both in immaculate condition and well loved. Only reason for sale is because I've seen some cabs that've taken my fancy, so also want to shift these fast as a pair, though if two interested people crop up at the same time, well there ya have it! They've sounded great for any gig I've used them for from little cruise ship gigs to mainstage festival slots, they've never let me down and never looked or sounded out of place. They're not particularly heavy, and they're pretty compact too! They're 300 watts a hit, and they're dual voice coil so you can have that at 4 or 8 ohms, selectable by a switch. The horns both work fine, also three way switchable between off, on a bit, and on a lot. Looking for £400ono, I'm based in Rochdale, but the cabs I'm after are down south so there's potential for movement there too!
13. Bit of a backwards step today at first, whilst rubbing back the coat of oil, a scar in the wood was spotted - looks like I did it on one of the hangers when I hadn't filed down the hook enough so it was a bit of a battle, so that was duly steamed out before any more progress could happen, it's currently on it's 4th coat now and looking great. Interestingly, the ash on the rear takes more of a shine than the maple cap... to be honest I quite like the effect! Got some more coats to go still, but it's getting closer by the day!
14. Spent a bit more time with it today, had a pretty in depth conversation with Chris from Alpher last night talking all things bass, and giving me some pointers for the finishing process of this one. I've been leaving nearly 24 hours between coats but he reckons I can get two a day in, and he's advised that after a few coats, I start gently using the wire wool with almost no pressure to apply the oil. Here's the look of things just as I applied the third coat, it's starting to look really good! A trick my old man gave me earlier on after running over with the wire wool is to use a very tiny amount of white spirit on a lint free rag (kitchen roll is doing a wonderful job!) and to just gently clean up every time between coats.
15. So this is how the grain's looking after it's first coat having had 24 hours to dry. Really pleased with progress, it's currently hanging after it's second coat and it's already gaining a nice finish to it. Long way to go but it'll be worth it!
16. I just can't wait to get it back together, but I know time is of the essence for it to be right! All the bits are here and ready to go, the hardest job will probably be getting the preamp back in. Lots of soldering in funny positions to do, but it's all noted and labeled / photographed, so it hopefully won't be too strenuous!
17. Cheers guys There are various ways you can finish tru oil, I'm not fussed about going for the slurry and buff, given that the wood has been sanded to 2500 anyway, it wouldn't make much difference as the wood had a nice sheen to it before I'd even got anywhere near it with oil. Like anything, it has to be built up in coats, between 5 and 10 is ideal. The way I'll be doing the finish is a coat at a time with a very light rubbing with 0000 wire wool between coats to build it up, and this should give a rather nice sheen over the instrument, but not gloss.
18. Well everyone likes an update, and to be honest I've been so stuck in with things that I haven't had chance to update on here. Lots more sanding took place, making sure I didn't over or under sand in any places, the curves around the horns were the trickiest. But to get the best finish, for the flat surfaces I made us of a piece of timber, smoothed it down and used that as a sanding block, and then a piece of foam with sand paper wrapped around it for the curvy bits - both of which proved to be really effective. Between grades, I always wet down the body as well, to allow the grain to swell which would give a smoother end result, match this with sanding to 2500 grit, I almost didn't want to oil it the finish was that good! I also drilled out the holes for the recessed straploks, using the pre existing screw hole as a pilot for the drill. Scariest part of the job, but a perfect fit! As it was around half past midnight today when I finished sanding, I called it a day to give my arm a rest, and today was the biggy. I started by removing all of the sawdust from the various cavities, and giving the body a once over with some paint prep wipes: Whilst this was drying, and preferably before oiling, I needed to work out a way of suspending the body to dry, so I could do full coats at a time. About 5 minutes of mooching around the house, I came up with this solution... I'm definitely the son of an engineer! And finally, the pic below shows the body after having it's first coat of oil applied, and is currently hanging to cure for 24 hours before I flat it again with 0000 wire wool
19. Surplus to requirements now as was bought as a backup 5er, and I've ended up recently acquiring the FNA which is the new backup, and this has just been living in it's case since. It's only been used for two gigs, and it's pretty much immaculate. There are some slight scratches on the back which don't even come up in the photos, it has it's plastic protection over the control plate still. It may as well be new! It's a Yamaha RBX765a in the translucent blue finish and gold hardware, it looks more turquoise to be honest but Yamaha say it's blue! The body is Alder / Ash veneer with a maple neck and rosewood board. 5 strings with quite nice spacing. It's not like a broadneck, but it's definitely not as narrow as things like Ibanez and Fender. Controls are vol, blend, treble cut / boost and bass cut / boost (active bass). I'm after £250 for it, I'm in Rochdale but I'm willing to post at buyer's expense if required. PM for more details / sensible offers
20. Definitely playing it as safe as I can to avoid any issues, would it be worth leaving it in a room with a dehumidifier too?
21. Well everyone likes progress and an update! Stripped all the finish off now, that wax finish still goes pretty deep! Also removed all the dents and the green bits, so it will end up like new! Started very coarse with grit 80 yesterday: Also, to see the colour difference: Each night I dampen the wood to raise the grain, and also I like to see the flame! Today I sanded at 120 grit, then dampened the grain again: Also had a nice delivery today with shiny bits, so the new nut is also on! 22. Everything crossed it goes well, I'm going to be working on removing a couple of dents and buckle rash today, and there's a small wood repair I need to do on the rear around one of the neck screw ferrules. I considered a high gloss, but with this one being my backup bass, I can't justify the extra cost to get that done, I had my Infinity done like that recently (another thread on here somewhere), and it's absolutely gorgeous. Tru Oil is definitely how I want to go with this one
23. So recently, I lay hands upon a gorgeous Corvette FNA Jazzman 5, and it makes a great backup to the Infinity. Already in a good condition with no knocks or anything, but true to many pale Warwicks, the finish has dulled over time and that's not looking so great. Given it's age (2000), the gold knobs have started to fade and are almost chrome, and the volume one was completely missing. The just a nut 2 was also broken, which is to be expected, and Warwicks of that period didn't come with strap locks, which for me are essential - So, new brass Just A Nut III, some gold recessed strap locks, and some new Warwick gold knobs all ordered... but that leaves the rest of the bass looking a bit dull. So the plan now, is to completely strip it back and go for a refinish. There's a dent which can be seen in the below pic from where in a previous life it's had a thumb resting on a pickup, so that needs to be sorted. I'll sand out all of the darker bits, and then I'm intending to give it around five coats of tru oil, as advised by a friend from Alpher Guitars. Coming apart nicely, easily one of the most impressive bridge systems I've seen! (In my opinion of course) And so far, so good!
