1. Be careful with the older Duets, the driver support isn't as good. I had an original Duet and I got rid of it as it was constantly glitching with whichever OS was before Yosemite. I'm running Yosemite with a Roland DuoCapture now which cost me £100 new, and it's brilliant, and rock solid too!
2. Okay so here's another update. I really cannot fault Lufthansa after my return flight from Miami! Getting the final leg of the journey was a bit interesting, they happily let me take them on the flight from Frankfurt to Newark, but when we transferred to a United flight, they weren't so good. Everything went in the hold, and when we got to Miami, they dropped the Peli off the plane (luckily it did it's job and only a tiny bit of shock damage to the Infinity), and then they managed to lose the guitars for about an hour! On the way back however, the guys at Frankfurt on the flight from Miami to Munich were great, they actually moved our seats on the flight along with someone elses, so we could have the three cases on a double seat next to us, no questions asked. Then we got on the flight from Munich to Manchester, and they gave us priority boarding again, allowing the instruments to go in the overhead lockers.
3. I've got a bit of an update for this thread from today's experience so far. I'm currently say in Frankfurt airport awaiting a transfer to Miami, at my feet, a Peli 1750 and a Hiscox containing the Infinity and the Fretless. The band I'm with is travelling with Lufthansa whom have a reputation for breaking instruments, so at the desk when checking in all the flight cased gear, I found manners and politeness work wonders. So far, they've not checked it in, and said I can carry it directly the gate, and there's a chance I will have to put them in the hold there. This was at Manchester airport for the record. We were taken through a separate fast track security gate where they could x-ray the instruments properly, and then we proceeded to the gate. We stood quietly, in view of the desk people but we didn't go accosting them when they were clearly busy... and someone approached us as they spotted the cases, and we were told that they would have a quick word with the captain to see if they could get them on the plane... two minutes later, we were priority boarding ahead of everyone on the plane, with three guitars (two basses) and our hand luggage safely in the lockers. So far so good, Lufthansa are doing well here! Frankfurt airport have been pretty good with us too, also understanding that they're fragile and we'd like to bypass the handlers, though part of me wonders if they spent less time ogling at the Warwicks, we may have just caught the flight... but ho hum, free feast on Lufthansa and better seats on the next flight. I'm boarding in an hour, so we'll see where we get to getting the gear onto the plane then. So in a nutshell, turn up for check in as early as you can so you don't hold too many people up, and when you do as it'll happen, be very apologetic. Manners, they work wonders, no arse licking or anything, just general politeness works fine. Just in case they do go in the hold, I'm still covered for them. I have insurance, the Peli... well, it's a Peli, and it has a pair of TSA locks on too, the Hiscox isn't locked and just has a bit of fragile tape over the locks - when security looked at it they even offered to replace the tape with new, better stuff!
4. They are, the Infinity fits in the 1750 with about an inch to spare, so not as much as some cases, but given that this one is super solid, and will also be fitted with decent foam, I'm not desperately worried........ yet.
5. They've done a wonderful job, especially considering the time constraints they had. I've been informed that after a while it'll need a bit more polishing, as it's still a touch soft at the moment, so I'm being very delicate and leaving it out as much as I can to let it settle. I've got a Peli case arriving for it tomorrow too, so when I take it to America with me in just under a couple of weeks, at least I'll be safe in the knowledge that I've at least done everything I can to protect it!
6. Well... it's back
7. Yeah that's been at the front of my mind! But, it'll be within other cases too on the trolley, and will have a TSA lock on it so they can get in and relock it with no issues. I'll get it straight to check in and go from there.
8. I should add I've just measured up, looks like I need a 1750 instead. Oops
9. Just a thought, has anyone done this? I'm flying to America in just under two weeks and taking three basses with me. I'm not too fussed about the Yamaha and Corvette, they'll be okay in their Hiscoxs, but I'm a little more worried about flying with the Infinity. I know just how nicely instruments are treated by airlines. I've been looking at flight cases, and the only one which seems like it'll possibly be up for the job is going to cost me £260, and it'll be a tight schedule to get it built - the standard Warwick case ain't up for the job. Has anyone thought about using a Peli for flying a bass? I know photographers swear by them, and I can pick up a new 1720 rifle case with foam for less than the flight case will cost me, with TSA locks too. Can anyone see any drawbacks?
10. Had some photos through today during polishing. It's looking good! It's all part of the game with lacquering, there're parts where you'll sand through. You can also see the routing for the Neutrik locking socket that's being fitted too. 11. No more pics as of yet, but I believe they're hoping to start sanding and polishing tomorrow. I think it's got around 13 coats, obviously it'll be less after sanding.
12. The DXR is a nice system, they're Nexo drivers too as Yamaha own Nexo now. One of the bands I work with played in a stretch tent at Electric Picnic in Ireland, pretty big affair and the rig was a pair of DXR12s and a pair of DXS15s, and the rig coped absolutely fine with us (party band)
13.
Subs are a good way of taking some pressure off the tops but unless the sub can put the signal to the tops with the lows removed or the tops have a way of filtering out the lows you may still end up driving the tops hard.
Ah, that's where crossovers / system controllers come in. Admittedly, I'm still mostly a passive user (with active HK Actor subs), and at full capacity I run four EV SX100+ passive tops, and the two HK Subs with a 2Kw Peavey ip2 power amp (it's cheap enough to replace if / when it dies). Generally speaking for pub gigs, you can quite easily get away with just the two tops, and I'll occasionally take a sub along as well if the kick's going to be going through. At all times the amp is racked in with an EV system controller (fancy crossover) and that takes care of everything and tells what signal from the desk to go where. As others have said, pay more attention to spl than wattage. The SX100s are only 200 watts continuous (800 peak), but the spl is 127db, and they'll take a hell of a lot more than 200 watts continuous if you give a good signal to it, especially if you're running with a sub. Going completely active but portable, RCF do a cracking array system. I work with a function band that has a pair of them, and though I'm not sure of the exact model, christ it's loud! Doesn't half pack a punch that's for sure!
14. I'm too excited. It's been gone two weeks so another two to go That said, I got the P setup and restrung last night before a gig and it was good fun to play... but I did miss the Warwick!
15. Who'd have thought Ovangkol could look so good eh?
16. Due to how crap the weather was yesterday, they weren't able to touch it, but the wheels were turning again today. Progress so far, slowly building the coats! 17. Already checked, the wiring was absolutely fine and untouched. Definitely the pot
18. So the first three coats which can be seen in the photos were the test / sealing coats, just to make sure no nasty reactions happen in case there's any residue from the original finish, or any nasties like that. I've just spoken to them, and I've been informed that everything is good, and they'll be starting with the main coats tomorrow
19. It's belting, already gigged twice with it this weekend and it sounds huge. Just needs a couple of tweaks. I've ordered a replacement CTS pot as the tone pot is goosed, new set of strings and then needs a setup. But for £350 can I really complain?
20. Thanks guys. The main reason for having this finish done is that it's my main gigging bass and it gets a hell of a lot of use. I've just had it on a two week job around the Mediterranean, playing 7 nights a week and around 4 sets a day, and I've got another job coming up around America, South America, Caribbean and Bahamas - all warm climates. Whilst I love the natural finishes too, everyone has a different pH level to their sweat, and some is naturally more acidic than others, unfortunately I've got the short straw with that one, and any pale finish my sweat doesn't get on with. I could keep waxing it, but as I found with my previous corvette, it didn't really help much, and I don't have the time to keep on top of the maintenance. With that in mind, I want the bass to sound and look as amazing as it does, but be as low maintenance too, and I figured that the best way would be to have it stripped and all the green rubbed off, and then have it sealed and coated with a good, solid 2k clear coat.
21. Well I've finally gone and done it. Whilst the Infinity's on it's holidays I probably felt there was a bass shaped void that needed filling haha. This beauty cropped up for sale the other day and I couldn't resist it really. I've been considering a P for a while so I've laid my hands on this 1996 50th Anniversary year MIJ Precision in Candy Apple Red I've never had a natural liking for Ps, but I understand for a lot of the styles I play they're perfect. I nipped up to near Newcastle to pick it up today and went straight to a gig with it afterwards. Sounded and performed absolutely spot on, there's a bit of a chip in the paint but it'll be easy enough to touch up. Set of straplocks, a clean up and some strings and I'll be happy as can be with this one!
22. Well I've had an update from the Eastwoods. So far they've stripped the wax and finish off, leaving it looking like this: After this any of the dents and imperfections have been removed with heat or something like that (I can't remember how they do it), they've also done a bit of routing to allow a decent Neutrik locking jack socket to fit, as we all know what the barrels are like! And then they sent me photos after three coats of lacquer... bearing in mind this is after three days, and they want it for a month - I can see where this is going! Excited would be an understatement!
23. Bumpity bump, still here. I've got a hankering after a P as my Warwick covers everything a Jazz covers, so open to P like trades, what've people got?
24. Some would probably think it's sacrilege to refinish a Warwick Infinity as it's an already gorgeous bass, but I don't get on with the natural finish... So today, I dropped it off with the fantastic Brian Eastwood to have it cleaned up, and then finished in a two pack high gloss clear coat lacquer. They'll have it for around a month but I've been informed they'll keep me updated with pics. Watch this space!
