1. Spalted maple, yeah. Looks like driftwood, but would be my top of choice if I was going for another bass
2. Nice top, quite unusual. I think it'll look great with limba, and a black board. Can't wait to see what it's gonna look like. Black hardware I suppose. yum! What it reminds me off...
3. If you like the Stingray, but don't like the price, you can try a Sterling (Ray34, Ray35, SB14), which are basically what the G&L tributes are to the USA G&L. Always try before you buy though
4. As far as tone, here's a good promo video, you get to hear it in other styles.
5. Cool clips. You can really see the difference in character. The ESP has more of the typical Jazz tone than the Fender! The strings on the Fender sound a bit dead to be fair. For me, Corvette(#1), ESP(#6), MM(#3), Fender. [sub] PS : They stopped making Corvette (Jazz configuration) in Germany BTW. The production moves somewhere in Asia, under the 'pro' line. I don't know if they will get cheaper but it makes sense. Not sure how economically viable it is for a big company to produce basses in germany for under £700. The fabled Corvettes 'Made In Germany'... [/sub]
6. That's the BB2024 in black. A rare sight, the tone is pretty awesome. Nice and chunky. I know they do some wizardry with processing and artificially aging the woods, but I bet a lot of the magic is in the pickups. I'm sure they could replicate that in a more 'budget' line.
7. Very well rounded basses. Decent electronics, good hardware, light, comfy, stable, no drama. Can't ask for more for the money really. Both Yamaha and Ibanez make some good gear, if a little bland, but who needs flash.
8. I think you have your bases covered there. Nice trio!
9. I quite like the Antique Tobacco finish on ash (sort of a dirtier Honey Violin), but it's quite rare.
10. Streamer for me. The Corvette $$ 5 is good, but for me it sounded a bit muddy on the B. The Streamer is tighter.
11. I got great improvements by swapping the MEC passive with Wizards 64. for £70, something to keep in mind if you want something more lively, open and less flat
12. That happens when I use my sansamp. I plug it and it's ear candy, then bypass, and it doesn't sound so good. Then after a while without the sansamp, it's fine again For me, it's about as much for looks as for tone. I like the look of fancy figured woods, but frankly, maple - ash - mahogany will do a similar job than exotic woods sound-wise.
13. Looks like the forbidden child of a Jerzy Drozd and a Thumb BO! That spalted maple is wild. If I ever get another custom, that would be the kind of top I'd want. And the black limba of the other clement
14. string spacing is tight on spectors (like warwicks). You can gun for a Euro, or a Rebop for a grand (thomann). I mean, DAMN that's hot!
15. Sandberg JM Olympic white. Clover Apeiron H.5 Lakland Skyline 5502 Clover Avenger Warwick Streamer LX Sterling By Music Man Ray35 (all from Musik Schmidt, sort of like Thomann, and in your budget). You can also try Shuker. Custom built.
16.
It doesn't matter what they do to a Corvette, the still look funny
Shwing!!! The Sound of Wood!
17. The Corvette is very nice. I like the Rockbass Alien. Semi Acoustic for the masses (hopefully).
18. Yeah, same electronics. I think it's how the preamp is voiced.
19. Between the Squier VM / CV Jazz, the Corvette, the Hohner, I think it's all a matter of personal tastes and comfort. The Corvette Ash would have a more 'meaty', low-mid sound (although not as pronounced and smoother than the Bubinga version), the Hohner more fundamentals, the Jazz would just be Jazz, so you can eq anything with them. I couldn't say about the Rockbasses. If it is a weight thing, the Rockbass Streamer would probably be very light, and big round sounds with their dual passive MEC humbuckers (two pickups version). I suppose they would be worth a try, I would choose them over the corvettes.
20. Dunno how much mine weight, but it's not heavy. Not featherweight, I'd say around 8 pounds and a bit. The Rockbass could be lighter, with agathis and alder bodies. One heavy SOB is my Warwick Corvette STD, bubinga body, wenge neck.
21. If you can find a Hohner BBass, give it a bash, It's got dub-like lows with the preamp. Aston Barrett plays one. About the same price than a Rockbass. BTW, I have one, 15 years old, and still going strong. Light bass, comfortable and well balanced, with a drop-d thing at the bridge (massive Steinberger thing). I'm swapping the electronics. Not for sale!
