1. Take a while yeah, but you get used to it after a while. And then playing on 4 strings will feel very easy If it doesn't work out, and you don't need the 5th strings, maybe think about a straight swap with someone who is looking for a 5 string. No money costs then (maybe even a bit of cash).
2. I think you can put Manring Les Claypool, and DiPiazza in the list. Another would be ERB players, like Carbone or Baudin. Solo artists are a different breed though.
3. the tuners do say west germany. Could it be 95? hmmm Ovangkol neck, Thought Fortresses were Wenge? Puzzling. The cuts on the body near the neck are strange. Could it be a replaced broken neck and refinish?
4. Woof! Very cool. Not your usual Fender pimpage that's for sure.
5. I have the strings it came with Bought the bass second hand and put wizards on it. Strings are light, and now pretty worn down, I don't know what they are, maybe warwicks. I don't really feel the need to change them because it sounds good as it is anyway, except to get a bit more snap. I've got DR Sunbeams on the way.
6. The pre is more than a 'sound enhancer'. It actually shapes the sound quite dramatically. I can get some mad dub sounds out of mine, bags of scary deep low ends, or some super aggressive music man or ric vibes. Then add a sansamp, ... There nothing like it.
7. Your strings sound really dead and rubbery. How do you feel about a set of proper EMG 40 DC? They are also proper expensive for sure. For the cheap(er) route, some DR HiBeams, and the Pod should have some nice patches for overdrive metal sounds.
8. BTW, if I was in the USA, I'd seriously consider Nordstrand NJ4's. They are too expensive in Europe, and Wizards do very nicely.
9.
I'm looking to get a more old school tone out of my passive Warwick Corvette Standard (The bubinga/ovangkol/wenge version). I was thinking about the Lollar Jazz Bass Pups but I have run across discussions of the Wizard 64s which look great and would be a fair bit cheaper than the Lollars even shipped from the UK to US. Anybody have any thoughts about how these might sound in the Warwick? Anyone compare them to the Lollars? http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant....zz-bass-pickups http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/shop.asp?ca...sub=Jazz%20Bass
That was me I really like the wizards in the corvette. I was looking for the same and that's what I got. More open than the MECs that I found too mid-focused, clanky and lacking clarity. They have good output too. On the over hand, I would bet the Lollars will have similar characteristics. With shipping, currency conversion, and customs (?), I suppose Wizards would still be cheaper, but I'd just stick with local stuff to save any hassle.
10.
Ive got a surveyor ive been trying to sell, the neck is slimmer than a jazz. Sound wise its like a musicman and then some turn everything back and its like a jazz or precision. Only sound link ive got of one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3moRHcjXoNk wait untill half way through the song for just bass.
Yummy. Great sound!
11. Yeah, they are still too expensive. Will be a good deal second-hand though.
12. But Norwood is a freak! (in a good, awesome way). A lot of metal players wear their thumb down low, I tried, it's very uncomfortable. Aparently a good grippy suede strap helps. Playing it high and horizontal (its natural balance) helps. The 4 strings seems to balance better.
13. the SB14 is basswood. That's probably why The Ray34 has a ash body.
14. The Bolt On 5 strings I had an awesome cutting sound. It was a '98 with wenge neck. The problems were balance, weight and it felt like a 36 scale with such a small body. Try one if you can with a strap. They are meant to be played high up, or with a comfort strap. Now provides the low end for this band : http://www.myspace.com/toxicfederation
15. Interesting. I've got some cash aside and decided to upgrade my old trusted B-Bass IV's electronics (the weak point, although they are decent as is). I'm going for wizards and a Noll TCM3 PM B2026 Anyone actually tried EMGs in there? That's also an option, albeit expensive! The B-Bass is a great little thing.
16. It's quite ridiculous isn't it. Jamiroquai's still popular, The bass lines are great, they'd make a killing. I would get transcriptions of Emergency... / Travelling... / High Times no questions asked. Jamiroquai isn't particularly hard to transcribe either. Drums are pretty simple, no guitar solo... J.K.'s ego in the way? His wallet?
17. Thanks a lot, really appreciated. Shame they are not available anymore. I tried to get hold of them a long time ago with no luck. grrr...!
18. My Corvette 4 strings is a boat anchor. It's pretty heavy. The Ash versions are much lighter.
19. alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, made in China. Vs swamp ash/bubinga, ovangkol-wenge, bell brass frets, and made in Germany.
20. Nice choices. schecters are nice in general, so are the Ibanez and the Squier looks good. Not sure about the ESP (not my looks). The Omen looks pretty cool. It's hard to find a dud nowadays, whatever the price. Best of course is to get your hands on them if you can and see if it suits you. I'll add the Peavey Grind, Spectors, and the Trabens if you get the chance to try one. Note that Active preamp is not always recommended for cheapo bass (although they are decent in general). They have to sacrifice somewhere!
21. as for amps, a quick example http://www.thomann.de/gb/gallien_krueger_b...0_halfstack.htm With the rockbass above, you'd get quite a mighty setup. As ever, you'll get loads of bang for bucks second hands.
22. the Steve Harris is a P bass with a SD quarter Pounder. You can get a cheap P bass and give it the Steve Harris treatment Leave space for a decent amp. Power requirements aside, I like that Roland Cube. http://www.thomann.de/gb/roland_cube_100_bass.htm ROLAND CB-100 BASS Speaking of cheap basses, that looks interesting : http://www.thomann.de/gb/warwick_rockbass_...lackhawkset.htm
