    HELP!!

hey there bass chatters! basically i've never found a 5 string bass that i'm truely happy with, i play a gene simmons punisher and its exactly right for me - if it came in a 5 string version then i would get it! but they dont so i've tried warwick infinity stingray bongo precision jazz and currently on an overwater pregress 3 deluxe the overwater is about as close to happy as i've ever been with a 5 stringer, but its still not right the punisher has a 'normal' placement of a precision pickup but a hot EMG pup in it! now i tried out a schecter omen extreme 5 the other day at a shop in nottingham and acoustically it played awesomely and sounding amazing (being basically made of the same woods - mahogany body and maple/mahogany neck - as the punisher, just a bolt on neck) - BUT plugged it in and it sounded like a big pile of turd! my question is this - would fitting an EMG active pup (they do the precision in a soapbar size) and taking out the eq make it sound similar to my punisher? (which did have a tone pot that i didnt use, so out it came!) bit long winded but now you know what i'm aiming for, or suggestions and trades on the overwater for an ampeg 810 in good nick plus cash lol
  3. I run a crown xls 602 - with a RBI to one side and an rpm on the other, runs just fine, the only time it's clipped (albeit very slightly) was running an ampeg 810 balls out with bass at 3 oclock. But if you're just running one pre, look at the specs and outputs, they vary hugely, and will be your downfall if you don't consider all situations you'll need it for! On the other hand, pa power amps are designed not to colour, so you can be fairly happy that the sound you hear on stage is the sound you hear out front!

  6. I spent 13 years finding it! Turns out clean bottom, distorted top does it for me! But Roland rock is correct! The tone is out there! Just no other bass player you know has it! Lol No easy way out I'm afraid! All I will say is start with a comfortable bass and sculpt the amp around that!
  7. I stripped the affinity jazz back then sprayed it pink for the other half (as in my mrs, not my feminine side!) Let's just say it's bare wood REALLY is not boutique!
  8. Just thought I'd back up how good these are, I have one with the normal pup configuration, and it's the first bass that's made me WANT to play better and more varied styles as it does then all so well! And don't worry about the 36" scale, only a couple of mm longer per fret, but such a good tension for that b string!

cracking band - check these guys out! at the same time as NG26! lol
  10. just for my 2 penneth never head a bad orange in any type of band markbass heads are awesome, their cabs are so so i've never heard a trace elliot i liked, head, cab or otherwise, they just sound empty to me a 410/810 you will hear stood in front of it, if you move around then prepare for it to sound very different i adore the sound of 115 cabs - tonally, plus they sound the same wherever you are on the stage, but soundmen hate them! blast too much bass into the crowd when they want that to be their job! next option for me to try (as i've never had opportunity) are 212s - i'd assume they would handle the bass well, carry right across the stage, not annoy the soundman, and be fairly light now i'm going to upset people - i've never heard neo speakers sound as full or meaty as ceramic ones - there, i've said it! but i have heard 410 sound as bassy as 115s (just dont expect it to get out to your audiences! so my general gist - IMHO and IME is pubs and small clubs - go with 10's and big stages/ loud gigs - go more towards 15s this here is my problem cause i play the range atm! lol hope this helps, and if you dont agree with any of it, take it with a pinch of salt!
  11. does the soundguy look at you gone out too when you ask for 2 DI's? lol yeah Gary - after you let me try yours it just had to be done, and after all the overtime i've done recently, the other half couldnt say no! lol all i need to try out now is what cabs to go through - done and ampeg 810, but i have the 15, and the rehersal room i'm going to on sunday has the 410, so we shall see what i prefer! as a side note, i've never tried genz benz cabs cetera - is there plenty of volume to be had? out drummer LOVES his cymbals! ha ha
  12. best ones i've found within a decent budget are the crafter, and the takamine g(?) series! they are the only ones i could get a reasonably bassy sound out of! possibly why some struggle to hear against a normal acoustic guitar?
  13. the rbi is set to distorted highs - power amp - 10s (just rolled the bass off and back the treble down - it seems really bitey with distortion) the rpm is fat clean low - power amp - 15 (rolled the mids out around 1k out but set the treble to about 1 o clock) the unaffected of the rbi goes into the rear input of the rpm good lord does it get you moving now! but as stated earlier - if you're looking to do this set up, go for the rbi first! the rpm is perfectly gigable, and i have done for a couple of years, but the rbi just has such a more musical overdrive - even all the way up to full its still useable! next step is to mess about with the full band at rehersal to determine where the rpm mids should be so i dont mess with the guitards tone, and drums, too much! another big nod to tech 21 is that its just so neat behind it! with right angled jacks they are not in the way at all, and SO easy to get to the DI's
  14. [attachment=73910:photo_1.JPG] [attachment=73911:photo_2.JPG] ET VOILA! Internet being particularly slow tonight!
  15. Well, it's been a couple of years coming but I finally have the sansamp RBI to go with my RPM!! I've got to say though, as a stand alone pre, it's better than the rpm! But both together through this rig, it's breath taking!! Got to get a proper 6u case, and trying out an ampeg 410 with my 115 next weekend, but ATM, SERIOUSLY impressed! Hope the pic loads up off the iPhone! As we know, without pics, it doesn't exist! Bugger, it won't! Hold on 10 mins lol
  16. That looks awesome, and I bet it sounds the mutts nuts!
  17. the spector legends are awesome - and around that money second hand! in fact i have the 5 string custom in blue that will be coming up for sale soon - pm me if interested!
  18. I'm very happy with my mono strap so far, only had it a couple of weeks though - I didn't get the comfort strapp BECAUSE of the looks!
  19. i have the 5 string fretted version - awesome, simply awesome!
  20. where abouts are you based matey? i have a 410hlf, but the cab covering is coming off, so i took the speakers out and made myself 2 little 210 cabs using the original hlf speakers! if you wanted to do a swap, your speakers for mine then i may be up for that! i'm notts/ derby area, and i'm guessing they would be heavy to post all 4!
  21. play over the pickup, play hard, but only just catch the strings HA just got to the bit on the vid about having long nails! thats always been my reasoning, no one can understand how i can play with long nails, but thats the reason! - its also easier to just catch the string
  22. i point blank refused to buy flea ghs boomers, just cause it had an over rated (IMHO) bass player on em! turns out for drop d tuning, the low d is much improved on the same gauge in standard boomers! good on ya flea!! lol
  23. Sure I can't tempt you with a Spector legend custom 5 and I do the travelling?? Lol
