Go for a wee about 8 times, tune up about 6 times, remind myself of what the lyrics are to various chorus parts I sing, check straplocks about 5 times and then finally prize my tongue from the roof of my completely dried up mouth using a screwdriver, check my flies and then glide on serenely with my heart trying to escape through my ribcage. And then tune up once more. Or maybe twice Funny though, one song in and I'm completely relaxed and in the zone.

Thanks guys. I don't know what it is, but something has finally clicked after getting hold of the Jazz and Ric. I'm incredibly happy with this little brood and the sounds I get from them through the Shuttle 6 and UL310 are exactly the sounds I hear in my head- MY Bass sound

Last weekend I swapped my Fender US P Bass with Clarky for his 1986 Rickenbacker 4003. I've recently joined a second band that plays a lot of Brit music dating from the 60's, 70's and 80's and toyed with the idea of saving up for a Ric which I thought would compliment the sound we are looking to emulate. Given the prices of Rics currently, this was going to be something I was hoping to achieve soon. Anyway, cut a long story short, a deal was struck which saw my Fender heading towards Hammersmith and Clarky's Ric heading towards the outskirts of Woking which is surely the cultural home of the Rickenbacker in England! It's Mapleglo with Black trim (a very dark Mapleglo compared most of the other Rics I've seen in this colour) with a gorgeous grain. It's got Bartolinis fitted to it instead of the orignal stock pickups. The bridge is also a replacement (far better than the stock bridge). I played it on Saturday night and was blown away by the sound; still very Ric like but more ballsy and growly. The neck is a nice jazz profile. It feels and plays like no other Ric I've tried. I'm really happy with it and it looks great too. I may decide to change it back to its original spec, but at the moment it's for playing. It compliments my Jazz Bass nicely and offers a whole different array of sounds and vibes. While I had the camera out, I thought I'd take some pics of my Burgundy Mist 64 Reissue Fender Jazz, which is the nicest playing and sounding Jazz I've ever heard. And finally, there's a pic of the whole brood together (Ric, Jazz and Shuker "Alice" bass). I won't say that's it for me as I have done before only to change the whole lot around I hope this is it though, although I'd like a Duck Dunn at some stage!

We did a Charity gig in Welwyn on Saturday night, so no fee for playing but it gave us a really good opportunity to try out some new numbers (and Clarky's Ric 4003!) There were 2 bands on the bill (us and a group called Powerfade- good guys) and we each did 2 sets. Apart from completely forgetting the lyrics during Stuck in the Middle and screwing up the Middle 8 in Learn to Fly, we went down a storm and played 3 encores, which resulted in a jam of White Room with the other band's drummer and guitarist (including a bass solo of some description). Didn't get in to gone 2am and had my usual can't sleep after a gig night. I took the GB Shuttle 6 and Epifani UL310 to play through (only the vocals went through the PA) and played the Jazz bass and the Ric; both sounded immense. The other bassist used my rig too and I had a chance to hear it from the audience. He was playing a Jazz bass too and the whole thing so sat nice and tight in the mix. A very good evening all in all.

Clarky and I met for a second time in a carpark yesterday to talk bass and exchange bass stuff. The first time was to swap cabs and yesterday was to swap basses. In exchange for my Fender US P Bass, Clarky gave me his Rickenbacker 4003 in Maple Glo with black trim; absolutely perfect for me second band which plays a lot of late 70's- early 80's UK music. I'm very happy with the new bass and I had the opportunity to use it for a couple of numbers at my gig last night. It's fantastic and drew a few admiring glances alongside my Pink Jazz bass.
