1.
If you mail Messers E ball, they can tell the build date (birthday!) of the bass, options if any, and where it was sent to, as in what dealer worldwide...all free of charge.
Not for pre EB, it's a seperate company. Someone could of been sneaky by rubbing the '77 neck date off making it essentially a full on '76, it's quite common to have no neck date and as its got (I presume) the TM logo etc it would be taken as '76. Not that I'm suggesting that! No one is 100% certain about the preamps as they are covered in epoxy goo, John East's mm circuit is based on a '76 he has tested using a scope and measuring all the values carefully but (and me and mcnach fell out over this which actually made us best mates after but that another story!) it does not allow for any tolerances of the components at the time, even now basic electronic parts are listed as +/- 10% plus Leo might of bought boxes of bits from here there and everywhere, I don't think they were made under ISO9002 regulations if you know what I mean?
2. Am I right in thinking you bought a Streamliner over a Shuttle recently? You need both and like Musicman20 says one with a FET channel, it's lurvely!
3.
Its crazy listening to the normal Stingray tone, because my current goto Ray is strung with EB Flats, and not only is it harder to play (but good for buliding my finger strength) but the tone is changed a lot. Its still a Ray, but you lose the clank, the fret buzz and rattle, the aggressive bite, etc.
My pre EB had flats on when I bought it (it was Nicks from Nicks guitars gigging bass at the time and he is a flats man), the thump was second to none! Do you have any Rays with mutes fitted Gareth? They do get you very close
4.

For me this sums up the 2 band and pre EB in general, they just tend to have more top and more bottom at the same time! It also high lights why I am warming to solid state pre amps for Rays too, it has plenty of dirt when you drive the on board preamp even when played through what sounds like a fairly clean amp of some kind, they do not rely on the amp to put back in what the bass guitar itself is lacking
5.
a P bass, a Jazz bass...and a StingRay....4 string of course!
The Holy Trinity as it were Add a B string for even more goodness
6.
The only reason I have a Badass II on my Jap Jazz, is because the BBOT on it had action adjustment screws that use to unwind due to the vibrations of the strings, oh and because the saddles use to move around the base plate when playing and because the string spacing could be set spot on with a Badass and because the action can be set really low on a Badass with plenty of behind the saddle string break. Apart from that, no reason to change it.
All of this =100'000'000 yet people bang on about the tone diference it may or may not make
7.
Me to, My first MM was a nice teal/maple Sterling 4. not everyone likes that coulour though.
Those people are wrong
8.
I seem to remember seeing this clip in some other context on Basschat, but I watched it again recently and was struck by what a great example of what is to me the archetypal Stingray sound . The full-bore attack of this bass allied to the superb skills of the guy who's playing it.makes every note punch through the mix on this performance.:
If that does not give you Stingray gas then you have no soul
9. It snowed the day I bought my blue SR5 which stopped me going to bass direct, it could easily of been one of those or a clover maybe else!
10. Just to contradict myself European and tasty, Mayones Jabba 5 Classic
11. I appreciate the quality but overall they bore me, ok rays are not that exciting but mine are not trying to copy anything, I put them in the 'another Fender copy' camp
12.
Is that the '76 sunburst one ? If so then you have just taken home what looks to be a rare and very beautiful example of a truly iconic bass. I hope you will posting pics be letting us know how you are getting on with it. Enjoy !
+1 I started a pre EB thread ages so make sure you post them there too.
13.
Bought the pre- eb Ray from Mark at Bass Direct today. One note was all it took. Amazing sound. I'm just gonna play this. Hope the guy trying the cabs got sorted.
I only saw that a couple of days ago! I think you have had a bargain there Do you agree they have some kind of extra magic? People think they are just the same as an EBMM but the only parts that are interchangeable are the tuners, so they only look the same really!
14.
Ah.. So he has 2 right hand and a lefty.. I think ill buy all 3.
The lefties were really rare ones as the logo was written backwards, he had even gone to the trouble of having a matching music room but with all the furniture the opposite way round, clever bloke!
15. Ah read it again 2x15, it's early!
16. A 1000 watts into a single Laney 1x15 then?
17. Sounds fret-ist to me
18.
Was it the left hooker stingray?
Only in two of the adverts the other was identicle but right handed
19. Ta Lozz, I would never say never, if I was recording and had a sound in my head then I'm happy to thump a P through an Ampeg or a Ricky through an emulator or whatever does the job but a Ray through a solid state amp is where I am happiest just like I was 10 years ago with my SR4 and TNT
20. I f***ing love Teal! My first Ray was a Teal SR4 with a maple board 10 years ago, as I only really play my fives these days it got swapped on here for the black SR5 which is a great bass and my go to for everything. I'd love an early Teal SR5
21. Looked on there twice, found the same stingray advertised about 3 times with different details, never been back
22. I can't tell the difference between fuzz, grit, warmth call it what you will, I have played through almost every make of amp over the years but the ones I have liked the most have been solid state pre and power amp equipped. I'm not saying they are better and I'm sure the quest for an Ampeg in a shoe box will continue without me but for me personally I'm not a fan of valves.
23. I always liked that Peavey amp, I only changed it to keep up with a guitarists 4x12 Marshall JCM rig, I had an Ashdown for years and never really loved it. Turns out that Peavey was the sound I liked all along. Stingrays have quite a bit of inbuilt grit and sizzle too so maybe I don't need any more especially from the preamp dept?
24. Yes, and it was awful
