1. I was a fairly vocal anti 5 string person when I joined this forum, once you get your head around a fiver I think it is really hard to want to go back, sure some folk say they played a 5 string for a few years as their main bass then went home but I feel deep down they probably were playing a 4 + 1 style of playing rather than across the board, often my thoughts there are compounded by the "and I never used the low notes much anyway" at the end of their post, If I had the option of a 4 string or a 5 but the open B-D# were unusuable I would still take the 5 now! I have had the pleasure of many a bass of 4 and 5 string variety and I dont think any were beyond all hope for a life on stage, I have played 34 and 35 inch 5 strings and the outcomes have been varied IME, The so called daddy of the B string the Dingwalls have left me fairly cold tonally compared to some really nice Laklands that were just Skylines, I use an Ibanez of some sort at practice most tuesdays, wooden looking thing about £450 worth I think? It is a great bass that I could use for the rest of my playing days easily.
2. How many other hobbies provide any sort of return on the gear you need to purchase to be able to join in? I will never recover the cost of my gear unless I upped my game and got a regular function band on the go again, even then I would probably just spend more on gear because I was earning it! If you took up fishing it would cost a fortune in peg fees and transport, camping food (and drink ) etc yet you would at best bring home a manky old trout rather than a few quid
3. Then there is gas....gear acquisition syndrome....usually leads to a NBD
4. Great show that I haven't seen for years!
5.
Maybe there's money to be made in making an app the simply dims the screen when filming so as not to distract others.
I have already designed and patented the iSledgehammer
6. I have no idea? She is brilliant though.
7.
Some people have mentioned the legal aspect, that Peter Frampton may have broken a law by disposing of the phone. Perhaps the terms and conditions of concert tickets should be changed so that they cover this issue. Perhaps something like: "If you attend the concert and use electronic devices to take pictures, record video or audio, or similar then your phone may be removed from you by security and inserted in your anus sideways with the charger and all the packaging it was originally purchased with. Attendance at the concert will be taken to be acceptance of these terms and conditions."
Fixed
8. Im not saying he is Gay, korean, under 5 foot or has a preference for ladies clothing garments btw
9. Well at least thats an easy one, Nathan Watts
10. Its funny how the principle never catches on as a mainstream product? A generic P bass body that comes with a selection of pickguards and pickup combinations could be a big seller, the options of plug and play preamp, pickup (s) and pickguard finish would be endless.
11. Im not sure how this thread is any different from comparing players in the Female bassist threads? Flea vs Mark King imo
12. Im looking at it from my own point of view (excuse the pun) as an audience member though, from the stage I'd be less bothered, you can't see much with lights in your face anyway but I dont want to pay good money to stare at some one elses ipad all night! Has anyone been to the cinema lately? Ffs the sea of shimmering phone screens is awful!
13. Ha well I'll take what I can get, thanks
14. The comments about it being ok to take a "few pictures" and "just 2 minutes of footage" make me laugh, if the venue holds 5000 people thats a lot of pictures and footage with a constant flow of folk holding their camera up with the screen glowing rearwards distracting the people behind. Has anyone ever re watched the clips at home after? You cant hear the music and the images are crap at best, just watch the show or wait for the dvd to come out please
15. I'm a crap player and I'm unattractive so I'm screwed
16.
What I take exception to is the popular misconception that unskilled musicians are innately more creative, original and "refreshing" than ones that play well. Music is primarily a craft that you learn , not an art form that is the product of moments of transcendent inspiration, despite popular romantic myths to the contrary.
See loads of bands like the Arctic Monkeys are sh*t players but they speak to a generation, just as the Beatles did, just as the pistols did, just as Oasis did (gigsy on bass man, I mean he was total horse sh*t on bass!) Then over time they often become good players too (not Gigsy), maybe like Macca the natural skill for song writing was already in him who knows? What I do know for certain is that no matter how good Uxia Martinez is 10'000 people paying to see The Arctic Monkeys would not sit and watch her if they had been sold tickets for the Monkeys at MEN arena no matter how good she is, and she is good.
17. Well this turned out well Lets both stay in the pit after all Ian I think it is safer than we thought down here? Now if we could just get that big cake from the other thread and a few bottles of ale we would be all set up, Lol
18.
Having a pile of techniques under your belt doesn't automatically make you 'good'. 'Good' is what happens when you choose the right one.
You have fell into my trap! This is the reverse of where I disagree with Dingus in the other thread, I did not say "good" just like Pixiechick never said "technically great or skilled etc" in the favourite thread, you can be technical without being good and you can be good without being technical. If some people enjoy your work at all thats good if some feel compelled to list you as a favourite in the other thread that is job done regardless of Dingus' opinion IMO?
19. I think to some extent though we can put people into a technical camp that has no need to factor in if anyone likes them or not though, surely thats what grades do? You can be grade 8 and be boring with little flair, You can have no grades but could fly through them should you wish, You can be terrible but interesting to watch as a performance even if the performance is to your dog only, You can be great to listen to but boring to watch, etc etc etc all with or without an audience really but the graded folk have proven some degree of ability haven't they? I have confused myself now I think
20. I collected one, set it up, cleaned it and delivered it by hand to a member on here 130 miles away, it was a 2010 bass that came without the OHSC and a 2 EQ rather than the 3 even still it was £580! Unlike an SBMM or any of the others it did not feel just like a Stingray...it was a Stingray
21. There has been parts that are below standard on the last few Sandberg QC threads that should have stopped them leaving Sandberg's factory never mind where they then got sold on from, that said would Mark at Bassdirect have returned that bass to Sandberg? and if he did would Sandberg have been happy to post it off to Thomann with the hope someone else was happy with it? who knows.
22. TBF Doddy I was struggling to think of any other Jewish bassists
23.
I just don't see the point of this. A bass player is a person who plays the bass. This thread makes about as much sense as a "which male bassist has the best technical ability?" or "which bass is the bestest bass ever?". What next....who is the greatest ever gay bassist?...who is the most talented bassist of Jewish origin? Sooner or later it will descend into "my dad is bigger than yours!" Pointless.
The thread was started partly in jest because dingus could not grasp the concept of peoples favourite female bass players possibly also being a bit rubbish at the same time. Surely the answer to your question is Geddy Lee anyway?
