1. They don't even have the bloody make written on them! Even if you get a peek in the F hole all you get is a brand possibly. At least they all look great
2. Funnily enough I use an Ibanez 505 most Tuesdays at practice, I like it even with it's thin neck profile, the SR5 feels less chunky than the four string basses and the classic is flat like a pre eb. My old 82 stingray had a very slim neck almost like a Les Paul guitar!
3. Which is why a clean di to the desk from a stingray is killer with a full pa, nice cutting sound on stage to hear yourself big fat sound out front, as long as the engineer doesn't try and replicate the sound you have dialled in on your own amp!
4. I've tried to love them, I loaned one and gigged it, but it tipped up all night, I looked at others, they had razor sharp metal work, add a rubber ring they all said, so I looked again and the next few had sharp fret ends and crap binding or the finish was bleeding into the bindings, pah I give up
5.
I've got a few Stingrays and my 80s EB is just a great bass to play I've had from new and it's all beat up but it's fantastic and very versatile. My fretless from the 90s is very a good bass and it's potentially my sh*t fretless playing but it doesn't feel quite the same though it looks beautiful. The pre-EB is a different beast but I love playing it and it sounds tremendous. I had an SR5 and I just couldn't get on with it, it was really, really heavy and I found it to be just to full on and aggressive sounding but I'd really like to try the classic 5 string. Dunno if this adds to the conversation but I suppose there are variations in models. I've never really had a fender for any length of time and really didn't like the last one I had but I wouldn't discount buying one if it felt right.
As someone who has owned two pre eb basses I can confirm that the classic five is as near to a pre eb as you will find with a B string, alnico pickup, same eq, strung thru bridge, finished neck, it's all there but with the six bolt neck and wheel of fortune truss rod adjuster Most SR5s out there are ceramic pickup loaded and with the 3eq preamp and pickup selector you can see why people can find them different, my 2007 is a very late ceramic one and I love it now, you won't find a bass that can cut an on stage mix like it, sometimes it might not be the sound you want but at least you can be heard where a jazz would have been swallowed leaving you playing around trying to find the right amount of each pickup, I say this as a jazz bass liker and user, the ceramic in series is just a beast!
6. The style and sound of Ricks I quite like actually, the neck dive and shoddy build quality less so
7. The silhouette is just the same as strat and most guitars that use a loaded pick guard design, give a strat a tap between the pickups and down to the pots and you can hear that it's hollow, the silo and other makes like Ibanez offer HSH HSS or SSS pickup configurations so they need to remove wood from both sides of the outer pickups, part of the beauty of that is people can and do swap pickup types and brands just by swapping the pick guard.
8. I think we can at least all agree Rickys are sh*te
9. I dont think anyone is a mug for liking anything, we like what we like.
10. Im not sure what people want making built to a higher standard? I have played Allevas and Sadowsky basses, Roscoes and GB basses and although some had fancy woods on show none were built any better really, the neck pockets, paint finish and hardware are perfect on all three of my current ones as was my SR4,the bridge is of a higher quality than any fender bass, the tuners are bang on, they dont have neck dive, the pre eb basses were more Fender like and more hand finished feeling I suppose but I see that more of a negative with the typical Fender hit and miss build quality they have be known for with the now bad 70s ones, brilliant 2008s etc , if you are used to one type of bass your ears tune into it imo, anything else just wont work for that person, I cant use a P live as I just get a thin cutting tone from them no matter what amp I use with them plus I have never played a nice Fender 5 ever, not once in 25 years!
11.
Earthing arrangements really depend on the supply system.....i.e. TNS, TNC-S or TT Just saying
Exactly and if that reads like klingon to you banging earth spikes in isnt a good plan is it?
12.
That Strat-style switch is the only thing I don't like about the Sterling, although I never liked the switch on the Yamaha BBs either but it didn't stop me buying one. As for the 'Classic 5', I do like the look of those but damn they're expensive.
Gratuitous Classic5 shot It has all the bits you want without the silhouette styling or selector switch, sealed neck that is super slim forget chunky base ball bats etc, mine has a John East 2 band eq too. It looks, plays and sounds the nuts
13. Just to fan the flames, the laklands are really nice versatile basses, I've considered selling all three of my rays to buy one USA version of the 55- 02 (55-94?) Never need another bass again
14. The classic 5 might be more up your street, looks like a normal 70s stingray but they feel quite special compared to the standard models, tinted birdseye neck, slimmer profile, great finish on some cool colour options. That said I agree the SR5 isn't the prettiest bass but they are work horses and very versatile in the right hands, it should have been called the silhouette bass from the start really and is quite 80s in is appearance. There are loads of basses I don't like, p basses, Ricks, Gibsons, status etc so I just don't own any, problem solved
15. If the on stage volume is so loud you need an 8x10 you need to turn down, lol
16. Afaik she has not tried to be known as a celebrity bass player in her own right (like the ones people list on here most of us have never heard of) she is just a member of a band that are doing quite well, she is a tidy enough player IMO, even sneaks a bit of slap in here and there. Would they be where they are now if they were not three reasonable looking girls that can all play an instrument or two, probably not but I still like them.
17. It is my favourite name for it, lol. If you heard me use it you would agree too
18. I picked my 9.2 Shuttlemax up for £530 with a gig skinz carry case and the foot switch, it is epic on all levels plus it has the option for FET or valve drive, or indeed both, the power on tap is beyond anything I will ever need, if you see a minter you wont regret it trust me.
19. It is handy for keeping hold of the thing when drunken punters are around, and as Erik says for making it sit in the corner too, lol
20. As I've got (slightly) more competent on the stagg and the double bass I've noticed the things like the rests less, same as finding the right spot to get the double bass against the knee, I guess it just comes over time. After my last lesson with Jake on my Gedo I have now found the problem of the other rest on the stagg being in the way for the transition into thumb position, I'm not going to be in thumb for a long time but Jake had got me up to F and a practice piece ending on the G both hard on the stagg because of the little rest being too high up.
21. Anyone had a curly wurly lately? They are neither curly nor wurly anymore, just a series of triangles, wtf.
22.
You must be a youngster yourself as chips were in old pence when I were a nipper
I bet you had to walk fifty miles with no shoes to get them too?, lol I was born five years after decimalisation, thank God, what was that all about!
23. Easily the best you tube clips aren't they, I have learnt loads from them.
24. It's not cheaper if you use better materials and spend more man hours building them.
