  1. Good point, it might be a decent quality speaker lead. Can you unscrew the end or find any writing on it?
  2. That's what happens when you get the measurements mixed up between metric and imperial!
  3. Awesome. At a previous geek meet we came up with the idea of lightweight Ampeg and Marshall etc flight cases, basically empty boxes to use to carry all your kit in then stack the empty boxes on stage to look the part complete with battery powered LED power lights, you could even put a mic in front to keep the dinosaurs in the audience happy and arguing that amps and cabs are still needed! An Ampeg 8x10 would make an ideal lighting rig case, behringer mixer in the head with all the XLRs coming out the back!
  4. What are you using regarding pickups/mics etc? Big speakers behind big double basses with piezos or open mics tend to be feedback prone for me but there's only one way to find out really.
  5. Jeez, zombie thread! Are you her dad or something?! Lol
  6. The feed still goes to the desk, I wouldn't bypass and go direct to the power amps. It's all hypothetical anyway, my originals days are done with. I'd happily do both tbf, my mixer running our in ears on stage instead of wedges or amps/cabs and di out to the sound crew to do as they please, which given no amps to bleed into mics and no vocal monitors to cause feedback into the mics I think they'd be very happy!
  7. If I was on the originals circuit now that's exactly what I'd do, everyone on in ears preferably and ampless into a Behringer digital mixer that we'd get mixed to perfection in our own time then give the venue L and R, essentially like giving them an mp3 to play through their system at a volume to suit.
  8. When I say classic I mean, what most people regard as the Ray sound with an Alnico pickup rather than classic as in Aerosmith or AC-DC. I suspect most people suggesting one neck over the other aren't aware that one has a ceramic pickup and the other Alnico being only a five string thing?
  9. It's been said many times that the sign of a great song is one that can be played in different styles and still sound great.
  10. I think there's a lot of confusion here, no one is saying you either go clean or use an amp, what we are saying is what is this signature bass tone that the amp and cabs are creating that can't be created any other way other than a huge amp at full volume. The clean DI can go to whatever processing you want either at the desk end or near the actual player. I'd wager there's a bass player out there getting a killer Lemmy sound without an amp.
  11. Playing live in a comprimise in the sound department, if not using the "signature bass" sound makes the whole gig sound better in certain venues with certain house PA systems and certain house engineers then for me that's the way to go.
  12. If you want the classic Ray tone then the 2013 every time Imo
  13. Most of the players I've seen complain about getting this killer signature bass tone have had nothing more than a generic P Bass and Ashdown rig with some crappy patches on a cheap pedal board thing, they insisted that the engineer takes at least post di if not a cab micd up only to have the worst bass sound out front all night that neither cut through the mix nor exhibited what the player was doing even when clearly playing some nice stuff, often too loud out front ruining the FOH mix because the amp was right next to the player and had to be loud for them to hear it. Of course then if any of their fans say "you played great but the sound was terrible" guess what, it's the crappy sound crew because "we've spent ages getting the mix right in the studio". I've even been that person in the past too.
  14. I was back stage at a very high profile gig last night, there wasn't an amp in sight, I didn't hear anything lacking out front.
  15. But these sounds are available without an actual amp for both guitar players and bass players, if it's not being used to power an on stage monitor why lug it around.
  16. Certainly, if I was full time pro and the sound crew got me a perfect FOH and in ear mix with the knobs in a certain spot I'd happily let them glue them in place.
