The one i've tried with both a SWR Headlite and a GB Shuttle 6.0 sounded great! Very loud and with a very good headroom. Doesn't seem to loose many low-end. Not tried with a Double!

What's your budget and what cab(s) do you have?

I replaced mine GP12-X valve with a EHX 12AX7. The original valve was still fine but the EHX brought a warmer, clearer and more balanced sound. I advise you to try a few of them and go for the one you like best. Examples: EHX Mullard Groove Tubes Sovteck And i'm lacking a lot more but somebody else will pick up from here and give a better insight on each. For the price they are selling you can get the top three from your research and have them a go.

What about a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0? :brow: A big bit off your budget but would cope with that speaker just fine. I'm on your opposite side, have a 9.0 on it's way from the states and still trying to decide between a Midget T and a Supertwelve T... you could have a go at the 9er and let me know how they sound together Cheers

What is the model of your head? Can you post some pics of it so we can see what´s happening with it? I find it very strange to have so much fan noise... i had two TE amps and none had that issue. I have a significant number of pedals but the ones i wouldn't leave at home are my tuner (korg pitchblack) and my compressor (ebs multicomp) but i think i would still bring my auto-wah (3leaf audio) to funky things up.

Post pics of it. Your description can mean a lot of things. I'm no even shure you're talking of a cab or a combo . More seriously, there is a huge amount of TE owners and previous ones around here. I would like to replace the bridge on my SR5 with one with the mutes on but mailed Sterling and got ansewered that they don´t do replacements and it woudn´t fit too well in my bass. Since that conversation they released the new Classic series 'Rays and both have the mutes back again so i'm tempted to let my SR5 go and grab a Classic 'Ray 5! I agree that the original bridge is very good and hard to improve so not many people trying to build replacements, the only ones i saw for sale were chinese-made ones that wouldn't even have quality to fit a MM-copy

I think the best bass i'll ever get is the one i don't own... the GAS keeps comming! More seriously, a few years back i would say a Stingray or a TRB-5PII but having both now i've tried and liked very much a Ken Smith bass. I've tried it aginst a Fodera and it crushed it easily (*runs for cover!). If i had a Ken Smith instead i'm pretty shure i would be GASing for the TRB though... I've also tried a Alembic 6-string and loved it. Both tries were too far appart in time to get a good comparison with the K Smith. Just one last note to a make nobody mentioned yet - Jerzy Drodz - great top-end basses!

Every time i come to this thread i find myself scrolling back to this picture i've posted earlier I think it sums everything up! It's ridiculous how they look next to each other! 51m0n, i've seen that a few weeks back, how could i have forgotten about it! Edit: some personal comments added!

I'm going to get more insight on the SVT series now. I just had a offer to trade my TE 1215 GP12-X for an Ampeg SVT 410HE and some cash. I'll do it because there are lots of people who still think Ampeg is "The Holly Grail" of sound and i'll be able to sell it quite easily. In my opinion Ampeg muddys the sound a lot and lacks definition having poor air displacement (that's why you see so many fridges, the only way you can get close to be heard in a band). As soon as possible i'll go to Alex's cabs. As for the "all-valve real thing tone" i think that Sadowsky posted some pages back would hammer the SVP to a pulp. If you like SVT's valve tone just get a lightweight amp (can´t recommend the shuttle 9.0 enough, it also has a valve in it's pre ) and add a Sansamp VT Bass. Will do a better job on your sound abling you to dial in all kinds of sounds including SVT's with better definition, better cutting trough the mix, more respect from your band mates who'll stop complaining they only can hear the bass on stage and can't even understand what you're playing - they'll also find out that you can actually play the bass and are good at it, less ear problems, less back problems, easier to carry, easier to set your rig up, easier to store it in your car, cheaper too, etc... ! Oh! 18 pages in a little more than 2 days is trully a man's job! Cheers

Oh my God! They're spawning and invading the surroundings... we better get a pest-controller to try to contain this menace! To the OP: Listen to Mottlefeeder, my opinion is also to maintain the air flowing from the outside to inside unless you can come up with something close to what the fan in a PC does to it's processor. I had a Behringer BX1200 and it had 2 fans, one inside cooling the heatsink pulling air away from it and other on the chassis pulling out that same air.

I once saw a guy playing with one of these strapped to the back of his 4x10" SMX: It also had a on/off switch! I didn´t had the chance to question him about it though...

I like to have a valve in my pre but i think my heart couldn't last longer if every time i was playing i was scared that a power valve could blow up... but with solid state there's the same fear with fuses... it all comes down to personal taste, i also like Ampeg sound for a few (realy, realy few) applications but don't let the OP know about this!
