1. Fender '75 RI Jazz Fender '62 RI Jazz Fender CIJ Geddy Lee Sig Jazz Fender Nate Mendel Sig Precision Fender Classic '50s Precision Fender Classic '70s Jazz Ibanez SR1605 Ibanez GSR200 Overwater Progress III Overwater by Tanglewood Contemporary J 5 Peavey Grind 6 Squier VM '77 Twelve (owned)... In nearly 17 years. Not bad. My amp history is even more surprising: Mark bass LMIII head and Aguilar GS112... Then added a DB112NT and before that just a Hartke 4x10 transporter cab and Laney RB9 head.

    GAK

All my dealings with GAK have been great but on a couple of occasions I (like uncle psychosis) have chosen not to buy from GAK as a result of the online content. It's a shame that the guys who do the YouTube videos never do a decent product demonstration. It's either 4 mins of talking and 20 secs of a bass line (always fingerstyle!) or just playing that doesn't really show off the instrument. They were the first ones to have a video demo of the Nate Mendel up online and (I clearly bought it eventually) I just couldn't get the info I needed from the video to put my faith in purchasing it from them online. The demonstration didn't even feature pick playing which Nate is known for!
  3.
So just out of curiosity - Are you completely happy / settled with your bass tone - you plug in and play at rehearsals or gigs, maybe just a slight eq tweak for the venue? or are you the type that continually plays with your amp, pedals, set up, pup height etc always searching for something extra? Personally I'm the latter type - always fiddling with what I can, like i'm never satisfied and can always make improvements to my tone somehow.... Does type 1 even exist?!?
I'm type 1. I have a photo of my pedal settings on my phone which I use to just dial in settings when I'm setting up (only if any knobs have moved in transit). My amp is always set flat and I'll tweak it quickly during sound check IF the venue/room acoustics/stage requires it but that is very rare (thanks to my Auralex Gramma Pad!). Average set up time for me is easily under 10 minutes, often under 5. The rest of the changes in tone/dynamics etc come from my right hand technique.
  4. Lovely bass at a bargain price!! I'm pretty sure mine is CAR over silver base (like LPB) though. It's interesting that yours is different! GLWTS
  5. Thanks guys! From what I can see, the faulty item was returned and they accepted it as faulty. They then sent a new item which I believe renews the seven day distance selling act return as it's a new item and (as is the case) can vary drastically from the previous product and therefore I should be protected in being able to send it back. I've basically emailed photos to the company highlighting the original item and the new item (and the differences in workmanship between the two) and told them that I feel that the latter is not of a standard that matches the item description (sale of goods act). They accepted that and agreed to take it back with full refund, so were clearly trying to pull a fast one. All sorted
  6.
Distance selling regulations are different to your rights with regards to faulty items so they either don't know what they're talking about or they're trying to rip you off.
Probably both!
  7. Hi all, So I got a bass-related item from an online retailer which I had for a little while and it became faulty. They arranged for a replacement to be sent which turned up in an unsatisfactory condition (to me). I told them I wanted to return it and have my money back but they said I don't have the right because the seven days of the distance selling expired when they sent the first (faulty) item and didn't apply to the exchanged item. I can't find anything online about the distance selling act and it's application to a secondary item received as an exchange for a faulty item ANYWHERE! Any ideas on how I can get my money back or if there are any acts/regulations that would offer me fire power in my attempts to sort it? Thanks in advance
  8.
Well i did it! i got the tools needed together, sat down and watched a series of 4 short videos by John Carruthers and went for it!! Did the truss rod first, and immediately the buzz started disappearing,. Then followed his instructions and did saddles, checked intonation etc. Only thing i didn't have to do was the height at the nut, which i'm rather glad about because he might have looked confident filing away at a brand new bass but i wouldn't have been! Still going to keep practicing it on my OLP though, but both HowieBass and yourself are correct, i did sit there after thinking "Well that wasn't as bad as i thought"!
9.
I know i should man up and do it but i can't bring myself to do it! I think i'll get this done by someone who knows what they're doing and keep practicing on my cheapo so that i'm confident to do it in the future!
It looks lovely (like the Knight Rider bass rig!) You couldn't believe that in 6 months you'd be buying one... In 6 months you won't believe that you were scared to do a set-up on it!! (And wonder why you waste money paying someone for a set-up when it's so easy!)
  10. The Meshell track every time. I don't want to be made to listen to the bass. I want to feel the groove and then realise it's BECAUSE of the bass! The other track is technically very good but musically boring IMO (which to be fair, does show off the instrument very well so is the best thing for a product demonstration!).
  11. With 500w output AFTER my compressor and the headroom my Aguilar TLC and tone hammer pedals give me and a huge PA for my DI signal, I rarely need my amp loud enough to go past 5, nevermind clipping!
  12.
So much for non-angled headstocks being stronger!
To be fair, I'm not sure any angle of headstock is going to compensate for dropping and smashing into amps lol!
  13.
I have been searching for years for another Ibanez 5902 from the 1960's as it was my first bass. Tonight I have found one on ebay http://preview.tinyurl.com/nxqht6n Unfortunately it is priced at a little too much for nostalgia at £999.00 Mine was also mahogany as I stripped the paint and french polished the body and fitted a Gibson Grabber style scratchplate back in 1978. I snapped the neck at the headstock twice and it was repaired. After the third time it snapped I think I threw it away I can only find one picture of me with it and it only shows the headstock! Could I possibly sneak this one in through the backdoor?
Its a lovely looking bass but £1k for a bit of nostalgia :-S Also, I have to ask. I can understand snapping a headstock once or even twice but how did you manage to damage the same bass so badly THREE times?!
  14. It doesn't look like it would be good for metal...
  15. Sold some strings to Brian. Payed quickly and was a pleasure to deal with. Cheers mate! Matt
  16.
OK sorry guys.
No problem. I'm all for people adding knowledge so that we get the right info, let's just do it nicely :-)
  17.
Yum! Looks great.. I'm sure he can do the aged LPB too...
He can . When I asked him about getting LPB, he asked me if I had a photo as he didn't want to do LPB and it turn out I'd been after the darker (more green) like in your photo. Howard knew the official name for that colour as it came up in our discussion but it escapes me atm. Just ask and/ or show him the picture and I'm sure he'll be able to help you out. As I'm sure you know, what Howard doesn't know about bass isn't worth knowing!!
  18.
Most of us are not keen on fiction posted as fact because it is misleading and can lead people to make bad decisions.
Couldn't agree more but most of us would like to read through these threads without having to skip through pages of nonsense caused by someone who decided to be proactive, rude, patronising and (appearing) arrogant rather than questioning such 'fiction as fact' in a more polite way that would highlight its potential lack of validity sensibly (i.e. being respectful).
  19. For me it's an Aguilar TH500 head through a Aguilar DB112 and DB112NT. I really like my LMIII but it's a matter of time until I get a TH500 and retire it.
  20.
Have you got any pics?
Yup! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/221870-fender-75-ri-refinish/page__hl__howard__fromsearch__1
  21.
I'll see how I feel about the pups after a few gigs. I like 'em so far.... I could just tippex four dots on each. Colour-wise... this is winning:
This probably isn't going to help the GAS but Howard refinished my jazz bass (natural) in LPB with a matching headstock for a VERY good price and did an amazing job. Get it done!!
  22. MDF? Mighty Delightful Fodera ;-) Stunning bass JBF!!
  23.
Innit? Oh - forgot to mention... from the look of the cavities, she used to be candy apple red.
It would look lovely in CAR again!
  24.
I expect you'd have to have it specially made. Anyone with a Dremel, a few grades of sandpaper and an ounce of common sense can make a very nice scratchplate BTW. I'm surprised more of you don't have a go at it yourselves.
Because I'd still have to buy a blank sheet of scratchplate material which would probably cost more than getting a 'plate made by Howard?
  25.
Hi all. Has anyone upgraded to these? I'm looking to upgrade my Jazz, with Fralins, Delanos and Nordstrand making the shortlist. I'd like to see if anyone has used them before I discount them. Cheers folks, Drew
I replaced the Quarter pounder in my Nate Mendel Precision with the AG 4P-60. It's amazing and at £115 delivered, a real great price for such a big improvement. It's way more traditional in tonal terms than the quarter pounder. It's fatter sounding, still has clank and clarity with the tone knob on but has a much more old school (less aggressive) precision sound as the foundation. Apparently this comes from the materials (heavy formvar wire, Alnico V magnets) which were selected to replicate the sound of the original fender 60s precision pickups that were in Aguilar President Dave Boonshoft original '63 and '64 precisions. Having owned (and tried!) a fair few pickup upgrades from EMG, Nordstrand, Wizard, Lindy Fralin, Delano etc, the Aguilar are my personal favourite by some way!
