1.
Dot and bound is the sexiest of all Fender necks!
'Couldn't agree more - if I wasn't giving up on long-scale I'd have done something stupid and bought this the day it appeared (given the recent quiet though, I suspect the bass may now be sold?)
2. I think Alembic Js are 24 - a couple at AGC (again, not cheap)
3.
Mind you if the sound was nailed then why would you buy an Alembic?
For the badge! Seriously, it would be good to compare with an SI. The woodworking looks fantastic!
4. Let's get the Alembics to the top - staggering top on this and a staggering price (an Alembic 5 for £1100 - wow!!!)
5. Graham, Molan - thanks very much - I'm sure there are buyers around, it's just a slow market in general just now, plus the market for Alembic's has always been a minority one. Being honest, I'm perfectly happy to have the Essence around the office 'til it sells - always nice for those quieter moments of the day.
6. Some interest but still here (I'm honestly a bit surprised). A few lovely Alembics (and an impressive clone) on BC just now so I'll bump this in amongst them. The finish on this is very unusual and a very expensive custom option along with the chrome (over solid brass) hardware. The bass is a multi-laminate neck through model with the filter-based EQ - it's around the mid price range in the Alembic catalogue. The bass is in central Manchester for anybody that might want to try it (it's in my office but I have a good pre and headphones available). I can ship very readily to UK, Europe and the US - this might be more attractive outside the UK now given recent currency fluctuations.
7. Extremely rare and a fantastic copy - 'looks like it's in amazing condition too. Good luck - a very desirable bass at a realistic price
8. Another lovely Alembic on here at a fantastic price!
9. Just to echo what others on here have said - I've had an extensive conversation with Jule and he's an incredibly professional and very personable guy with fantastic communications and customer care. He has a brilliant pedigree and stands behind his product absolutely. I too was attracted by the aesthetic initially, and by the incredible attention to detail, components and build quality. I nearly pulled the trigger but after hearing a couple of examples, I realised that the tone probably wasn't what I was looking for. In the end, I went down the Millennia route (i'd had a bit more experience in previous projects) - another company with great pedigree. That said, if you're looking for a full-fat, all valve option (and a fairly flexible bass pre), the Monique has to be high on the list.
10. Rednose - thanks a lot and will do - hadn't thought of gumtree! Cheers
11. I hadaWechter that came in a massive but shaped TKL - you could try them (a major manufacturer based in Canada I think)
12. Rednose, thanks very much again (I could use a publicist - 'available for freelance work?) Truly a lovely bass - I'm really quite staggered it's still sat in my office. Available to try in Manchester if you want to come along.
13.
I was hoping that one of the people who do equate fast and thin might post, explaining why they made that link...
For me, it's more than neck dimensions - string compliance and tension, action and scale length play an important role. I find that slender and shallow necks (with low action etc.) provide less in terms of 'hampering' what I want to do - I can play more quickly (and more expressively) when I don't feel that the bass is providing physical obstacles. I get the obstacle-free feel with slender necks and play short-scale, super-narrow basses almost exclusively now. All this said, there are occassions when a slightly more chunky neck works better for me (particularly in blues and rock settings) - getting slowed-down a bit frequently adds something rather than subtracing. I'm not sure this makes any sense...
14. Agree with many observations in 'thin equals fast' discussion but it tends to equate to that for me. Alembic SC Deluxe with the 'Stanley' taper (1.5 - 2.15) is slender, shallow and incredibly fast - the tight spacing and satinated finish help too IME: the most slender and comfortable necks I've ever tried by some margin
15. For bags, try a Fusion F1 - not for short-scales specifically but not a long bag. The neck support is useful (with a fastener) and the head end of the bag accommodates 2+2 with ease. I have a Brown Bass in one (basically an SG copy) and it fits really well. The bags are well-padded too and very light. Straps pack away but are well-padded if you need them, so in all, a good option for short-scales (and for longer basses too).
16.
Bump... This bass is truly delicious, is it coming up for sale anytime soon? :-) Jazzyvee
Hi Jazzyvee - thanks for the lovely comments...no plans I must say! I've tried to get hold of this bass' fretless sister - the response from its owner was unsurprisingly negative (but friendly nonetheless!) 'Saw some clips of you playing with Ken Boothe (unless I'm going nuts) - always loved his voice and a great gig.
17. Karlfer, thanks for the positive comments re: Alembics and I'm very pleased to hear that your Epic is working out. As far as I know, Alembic people put the same care and attention into all the instruments that pass through their hands. The basses are certainly not cheap, but the skill, craft, experience and quality of materials is entirely obvious when you pick up an Alembic bass. I've had lots of lovely trade offers on this but would really like to hold out for cash - I've nearly been swayed but my move to short-sale implies that I must stay focused. Final price is £1125.
18. This just begs the question why would anybody sell such a gorgeous bass - truly one of the nicest I've ever seen on Basschat. If I wasn't selling my long-scales, I'd just sell the car and buy this. Beautiful bass, great playing - good luck!
19. Rednose, thanks very much for your comments and I agree entirely - I should probably put a bit more effort into selling this. It is both unusual and pretty cheap (IMO). Beyond that it sounds gorgeous and is lovely to play. Bump

Traded.

[sub]I think this used to be mine - a very lovely J indeed (I can't remember if it had the DiMarzios when I had it)[/sub]

Status
The Status sound is more to do with the construction and electronics than the pickups.
I'd tend to agree with this - the pickups are an important component in a detailed mosaic - the graphite in a Status contributes very significantly to the perceived clarity of tone (the active electronics too, however, if I run my SII in passive, the core tone of the bass is retained). I'm sure that Status pickups are very high-quality, though if you're looking to achieve some kind of analogue to the 'Status sound', the pickups alone may not deliver
