1.
I'm sure I've said this before, but I'm old enough and it was long enough ago for me to repeat myself (something my friends and family are coming to enjoy with warm affection in the years before 'I don't realise I've pissed myself' happens) A five string bass is a four string bass too, it just has a bit of extra scope on the odd occasion it's needed... It's also a three string, a two string etc etc
I like that definition! And everyone's right about my bit of pedantry. But I don't care! As I play a 51RI, I'm as close as I'll get, historically, to a double bass, and I'm happy with that. 1957-style? Waaaaaay too modern! To (finally) put my own answer to the original question, I think the 5er will eventually be the standard, but there's a few years to go yet...
2. Tower of Power - "What is hip?" - now, that's a good finger exercise!
3.
He is, actually. J.
Nope. Double bass > electric bass. The family resemblance is only that. Only the playing position is guitar-like. Even frets were on upright basses once, y'know... Look at the old Jazz headstock, it specifically says "electric bass"; look at a Fender VI, and it specifically states "electric bass guitar". The Musicman Silhouette is similarly titled. The VI is also erroneously called a baritone guitar - they're tuned to A or B, not EADGBE and are usually 27.5" scale or similar. Not to say you can't mess with different strings, of course... At the time, remember, if you played bass, it was either an upright or a tuba... A bass that can easily be played by a guitarist, yes. A bass guitar, no. However, I realise that this particular bit of pedantry is considered old-fashioned. So be it. I am too!
4. Combo + extension = no problems.
5. An invisible repair on a modern finish is tricky. Although the old nitrocellulose is evil stuff, just about invisible repairs can be done, by the best guys. Unless the bass is worth a lot, I'd say leave it. As to what your man should pay, tell him it's essentially unrepairable and ask him for thirty quid in reparation, or whatever figure strikes you as fair...
6. Std bass guitar? 6 EADGBE an octave down... An electric bass, however....4 *ducks*
7. Played Ivybridge RFC last night, as well as Tavisrock 'n' Blues Fest in the afternoon. Left home 11am, finished back at home at half one...phew! I did have time to nip back for some food and a shower, but that was it. All good stuff, although I have to clean some cider out of my bits box today! The Fest was a charity do for Help for Heroes, and when the RFC guys found out later, they did an instant whip-round and presented me with a pint glass full of wonga, £97.84 to be exact. A good day!

Welcome! "humble Bass Driver DI". - have to disagree with that - probably one of the best pieces of electronics ever to hang off a bass signal chain!

Hello!

Welcome! Nice rig, but too heavy for me... MIM Precision? Unbeatable VFM.
24. I've had one, with black lining, for around two years. It's been to a lot of gigs, and is certainly showing many signs of wear and tear, but it's a good case, and I have no complaints for the money. Mine is badged Westfield, but they are produced under many or no names. It will be replaced with either a Hiscox LiteFlite or Fender moulded case.
25. I've not broken a bass string, ever, in 40 years. (OK, that's the kiss of death for Saturday's gig! ) Stringing? The only difference I can see that it would make, from a physics point of view are these: 1) Very slightly greater tension, as more string is being stretched. 2) No need whatever for a massive bridge of any sort; whatever bridge is there, as long as it is basically rigid, is being clamped to the body by the strings, as opposed to the strings trying to tear the bridge form the bass. End result? Apart from that small tension increase, no difference that I've ever noticed.
