1. What chords are you trying to play?
2. Having a sell out crowd erupt into massive applause as we finished Brahms' 2nd symphony at a concert hall in Aberdeen with NYOS. Even sitting at the very back of a bass section that was a pretty spine tingling moment.
3. The Big John Hairy Balls and Granny Puker.
4. NS Design site says black rosewood.
5. Was it this one?
6. Also, if you're having trouble with strict alternation, number your fingers (in your head!) and say the numbers out loud as you play. Makes you feel like a tit but it does work.
7. I've been using three fingers (Ring, middle index) for a few years now. I could never get the pinky consistent enough with the other fingers, although I've recently been working on using the thumb. As far as practice exercises go, all I can say is start slowly, use a metronome and just play what you play normally. Make sure you can play it perfectly slow before speeding up.
8. I've never paid for a setup on a fretted instrument- start with just string height and intonation if required- dead easy to do and very difficult to screw up permanently. The truss rod is a little more intimidating, but if you're careful its very difficult to do permanent damage. Just don't overtighten (don't try and force it to move) and use the correct size tool. The beauty of this is you save a lot of cash and you can set your instruments up the way you want. You can also experiment with different setups. I'm an incessant tweaker with a low action fixation, and recently started doing my own DIY fret dressing- as long as your careful, you can make a huge difference. The Gary Willis link above is one of the best guides IMO.
9. They're perceived as being naff and tasteless by a lot of people. It is, of course, a matter of opinion
10. If you're unsure I would go with whichever is cheaper We have a tendency to get very anal about tone when the difference in real life is probably minimal. I would only go for a change if you're really unhappy with the Ampeg.
11. Thanks Glad someone got some use out of them. Unfortunately that's all I have at in that regard.
12. Do you mean why does slap bass get a bad rep all the time? For a lot of people it relates to lots things they'd rather suppress (the 80s, Level 42, etc)- not helped by its excessive deployment in guitar shops, on youtube, etc. They just associate it with being naff and tasteless.
13. I hated the f**kers. Glad you had a good time though
14. Very nice.
15. Fantastic! Like it a lot.
16. I want one- been top of my GAS list for some time. Are the amp models realistic? I don't know. Do they sound good? To me, yes.
17. They have some new Class D power amps that have been advertised in the US at a pretty low price point as well.
18. They limit the distance your fingers can travel through the strings which allows you to play faster and with a lighter touch.
19. I would try with just a cloth and lemon oil in the first instance- that should get most of the grot off. If its really filthy a cotton ball with a little lighter fluid works wonders, then follow up with lemon oil. I treated a couple of my basses with this recently and was quite astonished at how easy it was to get the board looking tip-top again. Hope that helps.
20. I really want one of these for some reason.
21. I wouldn't worry about taking all the strings off- shouldn't be a problem, especially on a short term basis.
22. I think on of our songs came on in the pub the guitarist drinks in- he handed a copy in over the bar at some point. Neat, but didn't inspire as much rapture as I'd hoped
23.
if you mean changing position then there is an old double bass exercise I used to use: Fret the A string at the first fret with the index finger. Without looking at the fingerboard, shift and fret at the second fret. Go back to the first fret. Repeat slowly over and over. Then go 1st-3rd fret, again without looking. Continue up until you are shifting a whole octave on one string. It can be done and if practiced regularly you'll never have trouble with position shifts.
Also good for building fretting hand callouses. And it's called a "vomit exercise"
