W1_Pro started following Hondo Rickenbacker splitting for parts

I was looking for a diffferent sort of Hondo when I came accross this on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/267387545803?_skw=hondo+ii+bass+guitar&itmmeta=01K9D2ZE42Y0W47QVFJ4V6XSPD&hash=item3e418a28cb:g:KKEAAeSweKxotb8Y&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1d32JFlZ9hR7zmL%2F4CyZdNyRH52y%2FiuPIWTFFqJUZtKCFIl2or5Qy5wp%2FcNvcl04axr1Pg5KeLURUDKf1U9hV0JOVcfKowWtX4upMeJi8KtRHKnTnxHWTowLVPNJGP64koTD%2FhvNNaekzeSFB5QoYoHgyegnmXlQcbNLsWbEsmzCSi5qHKs5yITflrV35wQerdR1QF7hlfRDWTHeBQ3RZHoJkT4OUGqjg6%2FxvgqC6w7Ud5Suo6NFTRiFLuhvOvwNCqHXgwqbqikvX0rpAkfMcCw1bjQa%2BLM6q2otzSyAuC6kg%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6zi_aLLZg Its sold by something called 'Bristol Guitars' and if you look at their other items they seem to have just taken a Hondo Rick apart and be selling it piecemeal. Now I understand that these basses are unusual, and may have some collectability attached as its what Peter Hook used in the early years of Joy Divison, but if you add up what they are asking for all of the parts (right down to the strap buttons- a steal at £15.99 each) then it adds up to a faintly breathtaking £1220 odd. And you have to put it together yourself. You have to admire the chutzpah.....

Weeks old, as new, Rega Planar 1 Plus. If you’re getting back into vinyl, there’s no easier place to start - phono stage is already built in. I’ve owned this, literally, a few weeks from new. Only reason I’m selling is that my burgeoning vinyl collection has meant I’ve already ordered another model! I’m smitten….. These sound fabulous. It’s all as-new, will be sent in the original box with all the packaging. These retail at £399 - only asking £350 with free UK delivery. £50 off retail as new. Bank Transfer or PayPal ‘gift’ please. PM with any questions, thanks for looking! SB 😀

Please don’t message me if you are seeking a Pedulla case. I’ll sort this somehow.

Something a little different for me, Laura Lee‘s bass playing , i like this one -
We use this method on carpets and it’s proven to be very successful. I shall try it with this case too. Be a Shane to have to consign it to the scrap heap but I can imagine anyone else would want it like this.

Oh it is - the issue is the placement, which works very well for performance. For recording, double bass needs the right mic position which is not close mic'ing it which leads to boominess, whoosh and lack of definition. Anyway, you know all these things! I remember a very good engineer once using only a simple AKG 451 on my bass during a session, to my surprise. The sound was excellent and it sat beautifully in the mix. It convinced me that recording double bass is mostly technique and experience, rather than a specific piece of gear.

This ^^^^^^^ I place a saucer containing a generous amount of it and close the case for a few days. If you are careful, no vacuuming and the smell/damp is reduced/gone.

He fails to mention wall loading subs, which gives higher output. Not all venues can take advantage of that, but most can, and as sub output is omni-directional they can be placed to either side of the stage.

Interesting thought Ed 🤔 Thank you for taking the time to write and share your thoughts and experiences 👍 Much appreciated

I see quite a few of them in the hands of fairly prolific YouTubers too - Benni Jud from Germany (plays with Martin Miller) has been using a BB recently instead of the Marleaux he always used to be seen with. Constantine Delo of the Hindley Street Country Club (prolific Aussie cover band with a big YouTube presence) is rarely seen without his BB 5-string.

Also props to @andruca for the write up on their SB500S which helped push me over the edge and snag this one - cheers! Nice playing in the demos you put up, btw. https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/502833-nbd-pretty-nice-1981-yamaha-superbass-exemplar

Small wired in-ear headphones for practise - Any recommendations

@Sté I was trying to understand the differences between a pair of consumer in ear headphones such as the Bose ones and IEM's such as the Thomann ones. The jack plug is the same, but is there any other difference? Everything I have read seems to indicate there is little difference, e.g. https://www.rtings.com/headphones/learn/earbuds-vs-iems and https://producelikeapro.com/blog/iem-vs-earbuds/ Which seems to indicate that its the seal against the ear canal as opposed to any difference in the technology. So passive noise cancellation vs active noise cancellation such as Air Pods. However I'm trying to check if I can. If no difference, I'll just get a pair of cheapish IEMS and use them Thanjs Rob -
So this leaves two options as as I see it. Andy's suggestion of taking some material off the heel of the neck and Bassassins idea about routing a hole for the bridge. I'm inclining towards the latter, as I've seen that done (twice now, once on a bass of mine and once on Bassasins Satellite up the thread) and it seems to be a workable if somewhat heavy handed solution...

I picked this up cheap because it's in a bit of a state and I felt sorry for it. It's not a particularly common bass around these parts, so I figured I could get it back to being hale and hearty again. It's pretty dirty - the tuners are green in places and I had to wash my hands after stringing this bad boy back up - boak! But that's just dirt. The main issue with this bass is the neck pickup. The coil windings have been... interrupted shall we say. Thankfully most of the coil is intact, the break is pretty close to the beginning/end of the coil so I'm going to try to unwind it slightly back to good wire then solder it back up and see if that works, failing that I guess I'll need to get it rewound. A wee project for the weeks ahead. Its mostly cleaning and polishing, the pickup to attempt to repair, and maybe some finish repair on a couple of nasty chips in the neck finish. Dunno if it's worth a build diary, so I'll probably just document my progress here. FWIW, the remaining pickup sounded pretty decent in my wee Laney 30W combo in the office here. For all the dings/dents/scuffs/scrapes/lacquer cracks, the bones appear to be solid and it feels quite nice to play. I think with a bit of work this will end up being a fine counterpoint to my BB1200.

So I moved to the neck end and did the same amount of shimming with the same result...by now it was dawning on me that the shims on their own are achieveing nothing, because the bridge moves with the neck. I sort of knew this and I should have been able to work it out using a bit of string, a nail and an oil drum but I've always been hopeless at stuff like this so the practical work does help.... What next?
-
Absolutely, and for a 'proper' recording I do it with one of the nice mics in the nice recording room. (Though I'd still argue that a DPA is a 'proper mic' ! ) But my day job is a recording engineer/producer - one who happens to dabble in double bass - and so fairly often bands would like to have an idea of what a double bass would do on their tracks, and a pickup just isn't going to give the right impression. 9/10 the guide track would be replaced, but it's nice to have something that has a chance of working if I fluke a great performance! The equivalent of plugging a bass guitar to a DI in the control room and working out a part with the band in the live room, as it were.

What do you mean by the same ? The same plug jack for sure, but position is different in ears. You can see example pic on thomann website. On sound side, it's pretty superior than all i've had as standard small headphones. All is clear, bass are really good. https://www.thomann.fr/the_tbone_ep_4.htm
