chris2401 Posted June 20, 2010 Share Posted June 20, 2010 Hey fellows.looking in to buy a good 4x10 cabinet soon for my bands studio,live gigs and maybe recordings as well.looking into something that has a good "punch" (like an ampeg lets say?).also looking for an amp to match it,but thats another story here's some cabs i have in mind(i wouldnt mind spending over about 800 euros,sorry for saying euros but i live in greece): 1.SWR Golliath 4x10 (not for sale anymore,found it from some dude for 500 euros) 2.Hartke hx410 hydrive (http://www.thomann.de/gr/hartke_hx410_hydrive.htm) 3.Ampeg svt410 (http://www.thomann.de/gr/ampeg_svt410hlf_bassbox.htm) 4.Orange sp410 (http://www.thomann.de/gr/orange_sp410_or.htm) this one is small too so it could help for live gigs since im kinda of a noob,it would be useful if someone gave me some advice for one of these cabs.thanks guys. Chris[/quote] If weight isnt an issue, check the Aguilar 4x10s. Id love a DB410 but Ive got the Orange OBC410 therefore its not necessary. I've got an Epifani 410ul , and it's great , but I also have an Eden 410xlt permanantly stored in the practice unit , and it's punch city . The Eden's are not now flavour of the month - though they were , but everytime I play through it , I'm reminded why I spent a grand on it . They are heavy , for a 410 , but I'd say that they are one the few 410 benchmark cabs . And 2nd hand ,you can pick em up for around £400 . It does the job, but I went for the Orange in the end as it feels like its pushing more low end. But its all personal choice. The Goliath ll stopped being built in 1996. It was rear ported and had huge bass response and rated around 500watts, I believe. They replaced it with a Goliath lll which was slot ported at the front ands upped the power to 700watts, IIRC. That was the main difference I believe. I also used a Goliath Jnr lll which was 2x10 around that time as well. Both cabs had PAS speakers and again, the 2x10 was a good cab. I only got rid of the Goliath ll 4x10 due to weight but it did everything I wanted at the time. If your seller dates the cab at 1998, then it will likely be a Goliath lll. Check for the slot ports at the front bottom of the cab. This page will help you ID them. Deepending on condition you can pick Goliaths up in the U.K quite cheaply. For a 12 yr old cab, I would say 500 euros is pretty high, but don't know your market. It may also be possible that if it was exported to Greece..maybe the date changeover from Goliath ll to Goliath lll was later. I have used Ampeg cabs..admittedly some time ago..and the cabs weren't good or powerful, to my mind. Maybe they have upped their game..but they would have had to do that a lot, IMO. Surely with the economic problems in Greece they'll be some good bass equipment coming up on the second hand market at bargain prices? A Berg/Mesa is already top money...much more than the others mentioned, and it would cost a fortune to get over there. Then the OP might not even like it, but again he might not like the others. To me, there is no one definitive 'best 4x10', and the only brands I haven't tried are Epifani and Mesa. With 2x12s the DB212 has beat virtually all competition for myself when it came to core tone, but I haven't as yet found a 4x10 that was amazingly better than the others. I think a careful look around the used Market and products available new at lower pricing is a good idea. 51m0n Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Not disagreeing with the price thing, but was in fact trying to get people to stop mentioning things like Epifani, Mesaboogie or even Markbass (the big MB 410s are priced not so far away from a Berg ae410 these days ) All that kit is going to be unbelievably hard to trace in Greece for the kind of money mentioned here I'd have thought...
