I was just surfing around on youtube and found this:

How difficult would it be to slap like this? Where do you start?

I don't slap as I'm more of a rock player - but it's something I've been meaning to learn for while.

Any advice?

Larry Graham perhaps, then into Marcus Miller, jus going by his feel as much as technique.
Slap as a technique isn't hard, but the feel and approach I found harder to begin with, as like yourself I'm more Rock and Metal orientated.
Being able to slap like this guy, without sounding cheesy could take months or years, depends really.
His feel is too good! Fav'd the vid for later.

His music diet is probably full of this kind of music tho, so listen to as much funk and, beleive it or not, Gospel has some mad slap bassists, you dont need to praise god to listen to it.

i only did finger style playing till about 7 years ago and just decided after listening to some records that i liked the sound. my best advice is to get a good slapbass exercise book and maintain a good practice routine with a metronome.once you have become fairly experienced with certain styles of playing, improvise on these.that level of playing naturally without much effort may take 2/3 years depending on your ability/effort.but please note once you start this type of playing, the playing styles become very varied, so the style demonstrated by the bassdude on youtube is one of many.just practice and you will develop a certain style of your own.

p.s. some people consider it to be cheese, but it can be done originally.

Fair enough point about the vid gents, there's another one where exactly the same thing happens but its at a party and two guys are goofing around. Perhaps that might have been less shocking. Sorry about that, my bad.

I didn't find it shocking (sadly see far worse things at work) just a bit lame... :)

Any more bass advice? I've got the Ed Friedland DVD but have never got around to listening to it!
Get Stuart Clayton's "Ultimate Slap Bass" book and hammer through it. Very good resource IMO, which goes from the basics to the almost impossibles and everything in between. Its also a satisfyingly thick volume, so it feels like money well spent on your bookshelf :)
Omg I was 1st to reply and completely forgot to list that book!
It takes you from baby steps to Wooten and above (yes indeed), a very THICK book with ring binding so you can read it on a music stand fine, complete with a CD that sounds good, no rubbish bass tone here.

In fact, go to Amazon and order a copy now...really is the best advice.
Youtube is also a good resource if something in the book confuses you.

Just for info :)
Thanks for all the advice - so anyone have a link to the site?

It will probably take you some time.. a few years. It seems like you want to do it, but haven't gotten round to it so I wonder about the motive and enthusiasm.
If your musical leanings haven't taken you here ..then maybe you don't have any empathy with the style.

Anyway..that guy has a decent groove, so try and concentrate on making the easy hammer and pluck part of the technique feel good and snappy.
When you are hittings strings with thumb and pulling with the finger try and get it to feel good..you then get faster and build on it. But if it feels laboured after a time..you will never get it not to feel that way..and it will be a big hole in the technique/style.

Pull off with the 1st finger and second finger... for simple riffs..the second might work/feel better, IMV
